Commentary by Tical and Tibbs...

FDH 1V 74  Stackpole 77

Stackpole comes back and takes championship over FDH 1V with clutch FT shooting.

Going in to this one I had Stackpole as big favorites to take home “the Belt” and the 5v5 championship.  I felt confident with this pick as Stackpole proved too much for FDH 1V to handle less that a month ago).  But that was with Stackpole squad that had all 7 members while on this night they would only have 5 suited up as co-ROY Ryan Reilly (undisclosed reasons) and Joe Malcolm (pneumonia) would be out of the lineup.  That is 31 points from the previous match up out of the lineup and no rest for the 5 guys in uniform.  With info of Reilly not being there got to FDH 1V there eyes widen and ears perked up as they realized there chances of pulling off the upset just got a lot better.  Early on Jeff “Jazz” Holden (16 pts) was hitting (as usual) from way outside (as usual).  But FDH 1V was hitting as well and we had a tie game 10 minutes in.  Then we had our first big momentum swing.  After an offensive rebound (1 of 9 on the game) and put back attempt by the Wolverine (14 pts, 18 rebs), Matt Schoener (10 pts, 3 3’s) got T’d up for “disagreeing” with the call.  Holden and Wolverine made there FTs and a bucket on the ensuing possession gave Stackpole a 6 point edge and the game looked to possibly be blown wide open.  But that momentum was short lived as FDH 1V immediately went on an 8-0 run (highlighted by 2 threes) to retake the lead.  The teams continued to trade hoops and the lead before FDH took a 47-44 lead at the break.  FDH were lighting it up in the first half to the tune of 9 three pointers.  Complimenting the outside shooting of the whole squad was the inside tenactity of Craig Griifin (29 pts, 12 rebs) who had 18 at the break to pace all scorers.  The 2nd half started out similar to the 1st with FDH running and hitting shots from everywhere and they built a 3 point lead (largest margin for either squad) at 62-54 with just over 10 minutes remaining but that is where they seemed to run out of steam.  With the defense concentrating on Chris McMahon (25 pts, 13 rebs), the Wolverine found gaps in the defense and Chris Hunter (12 assists) hit him a few times down low with nice passes and he either finished them off (occasionally taking 2 attempts at it).  Brian Skerry (17 pts, 3 stls) also drove the lane relentlessly and finished with his patented left-handed floater and the FDH lead had evaporated.  On the whole the 2nd half of this one was pretty ugly with both teams committing a lot of fouls, as neither would allow any easy buckets.  Despite this CRFC’s youngest fan, Teddy Chisholm aka The Little Cheese, absolutely loved the action on the floor, clapping loudly with every made shot.  With 2+ minutes remaining it came down to free throw shooting.  Then Chris McMahon and Chris Hunter coolly hit 6 straight and FDH couldn’t find the shooting touch that had gotten them this far in the playoffs before hitting one last time form the outside to give us the final margin of 3.  Also putting up a great game in the losing effort was Mike Ellis (20 pts).  A tough end to FDH 1V’s inaugural season, but it had its highlights, namely Craig Griffin’s play throughout and their huge 2OT playoff upset of FTR.  We look forward to having them back.  A well deserved championship for Stackpole after last season’s fluke semifinal elimination.  A great victory to finish a fantastic season game for the boys of Stackpole who got a slight taste of victory only a month ago when they also took top honors at the 3-on-3 tourney but clearly wanted more.  MVP honors in this one go to Chris “Chise” McMahon, not shockingly, as he found a way to get in done in the end when he the game was on the line.  Chris might need to build a 2nd mantle in his house as his old one is surely filled by CRFC hardware by now.
