Winter 2005 B1 League Awards

The level of play has gotten so good in this league that we had to change the name from B1 to A2. We had some new legit superstars join the league (Shorey, Kent, Zeckser, all of Cambridge Medical) as well as the same ole stars (Danielson, Mazzone, Raymond, Coffey, Bain, etc.). In the Finals, Cambridge Medical got its first of what may be many titles against last year’s defending champ Kool Aid. Another successful season and it was great reffing and watching all the games. – WOLVERINE

Winter 2005 Champions - Cambridge Medical

You can tell this team has been playing together for a while. They are perfectly balanced with strong guard play and forward play. Just like any other successful relationship, they pass, play defense, talk, fight. They will be a very tough team to beat when they defend their title this season.

Most Valuable Player
Andy Danielson, Brick Wall

This guy can do anything he wants on the court – score, rebound, defend. He is also usually the lead guy on the break. And basketball isn’t even a sport he has ever really played. A great basketball player and an even greater athlete that was matched up with many other solid basketball players and always held his ground and usually outplayed them.

General Manager of the Year
Arnie Koh, Fun ‘N Gun

Benza brought together a group of volleyball guys and transformed them legit contenders. In addition to being a solid point guard, Arnie proved he can lead a team with humor instead of the hammer. It was easy to see how Arnie’s likable personality translated into a successful General Manager and leader.

Defensive Player of the Year
Ken Bascomb & Jermaine Baynes, Cambridge Medical

Pictured above in team photo Arguably the best backcourt in the league is also the best defensive tandem. Each week they repeatedly shut down the opposing guard play to propel their team to a championship. Ken Bascomb is more of a physical style of defense that pushes the enevelope on what is a foul and what is not. Baynes is more of an athletic defender and I haven’t seen anyone who can out quick or out jump him. I am glad I was not a guard in this league. Actually, I am glad I was not a forward or a center either.

Rookie of the Year
Steve Shorey, Fun N Gun

Steve Shorey was one of the most dominating big men in the league, combining a great outside game with a solid rebounding presence. Comparisons have been made to Raef LaFrentz, but I think at this point I’d rather have Shorey on my team than Raef.

Wolverine's Award
Derek Dally, Data Nuggets

I really like this guy’s attitude. Not only is he a dead ringer for a young Travolta in his Welcome Back Kotter days, he has greatly improved since the beginning of the season and always listens to his teammates on how he can best help his team win. Seems like a great guy to have around on any team whether tit be the office or the court.

Winter 2005 (B1) League Finals

Cambridge Medical 75 Kool Aid 56
Last Year’s defending champ Kool Aid had a disappointing season at 3-7. Yet they found themselves in the Finals in position to wit back-to-back championships, a feat not accomplished at CRFC since my Thick and Thicker Tubes teams repeated back in 2002 when I was a halfway decent player. The only thing in their way was Cambridge Medical team. Kool Aid started off hot as John Mazzone (29 points, 11 rebounds) and Mark Raymond (29 points, 7 rebounds) were hitting from the outside. Not to be outdone, Kenny Bascomb (29 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists) nailed his 1st two three pointers and the game see-sawed back and forth in the first 10 minutes of the game. Fred Bermont, who decided to show up for the Finals this year, was contributing nicely with 9 points, 8 rebounds and some tough defense. The game remained close as CM had a 6 point lead at the half. In the 2nd half, CM blew the game wide open as they proved to have too many weapons. Brian Scuffenbil had a fantastic night shooting (25 points) and I cannot say I remember him missing once, and I have a great memory. Jermaine Baynes (22 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and 2 blocks) had another spectacular game on both ends of the floor. With Bascomb leading the charge, the CM team put Kool Aid away with their passing and ultimate team play. Kool Aid just didn’t have enough manpower to keep up and CM cruised to the title. Congrats to both teams on a great season and see you on the court next league.
