In the B2 unification game last night, the Mullets were coming off a tremendous double overtime thriller with BALCO just 20 hours before the tip-off of this game. Meanwhile, IE was having a nice team sushi dinner on Tuesday night, preparing a game plan to take down the mighty Mullets. IE is pesky, scrappy, whatever word you want to use – but they usually get the job done so that’s why I gave them a chance at beating the East champs, especially with the expected and natural Mullets let down form the night before. With the Mullets coming out flat, IE jumped out early behind defensive player of the year John “Hamma Don’t” Herter (17 points, 3 steals). But defense was the name of the game tonight as both teams clamped down on the other team’s stars. The Mullets Dave Colanto was seemingly on a mission to get some recognition instead of Mike D (who, as I egregiously left out of last night’s write-up, had the presence of mind to kick out an offensive rebound that lead to Boris game tying three against BALCO in regulation). Colanto nailed 17 points, 10 in the critical first 15 minutes of the game to get the Mullets back the lead to which they never surrendered. Playoff MVP Boris Paskalev (19 points, 15 rebounds) looked a bit sluggish from Tuesday night’s 46 point, 24 rebound performance and battle with the Big Fish Matt Gill, but still managed to make his presence felt on both ends of the floor. The Mullets looked to be cruising in the 2nd half until IE went on a run that cut the lead to 6. But then IE’s big man Mike Donlan (11 points, 7 rebounds) went down on a fast break after a slight “pop” on his knee. That ended his night and hopefully things aren’t too bad for Donlan as he had to be driven to the emergency room to have it checked out. That put a serious damper on this game, but IE still hung tough, cutting the lead to 4 at one pint with the help of John Weiss (14 points, 8 rebounds) who came up with some big buckets and big rebounds. But Usok (16 points) would not be denied his 4th title of this CRFC season, as he drove the lane without caution on consecutive possessions to put IE away. Congrats to the Mullets on a great season as they lead this league wire to wire to give them another B2 championship after a 2 season hiatus. And great work by IE all season long and hope these guys have a great summer off playing softball. See you in the Fall.
