Hartbreakers Pull Out the Win

This game was mostly competitive up until late in the second half. The Hartbreakers came out pretty sloppy as usual, but quickly got it together to take the game. Newcomer Devin Jensen was a force all game, finishing with 21 points, 16 rebounds, and 6 assists. He was cold from three to start off, but by the end of the game he was hitting contested step back triples to finish four of twelve from range. Tucker Landy finished with 15 points, 8 boards, 1 assist, 2 steals, and 3 blocks, always efficient and reliable. He could've had more, but uncharacteristically smoked a few layups. Tim Dematteo added a double-double with 14 and 10 boards, while the much improved Joe Kamataris added 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists. Phil did his thing with 6 points, 5 rebounds, 13 dimes, and 3 steals, but only jacked up six threes, making (a career high?) two. It's hard to judge this team based on their "turn it on when it matters" style of play, but it's hard to deny the Gaetano Landy combo with a strong supporting cast of Dematteo, Dowden, Hart, Dempsey, and Kamataris. For now I'm happy to give them the benefit of the doubt as defending champs.

This is Beans kept it close for a while, in large part thanks to Eric Savage and Aaron Jaynes. Savage dropped 26 and 12, plus 2 steals, and is quickly establishing himself as an offensive force in the division. Given that he went one of seven from deep, he clearly has even more to offer, and might finish as the league's leading scorer. Aaron Jaynes redeemed himself this week. With his size and athleticism, it was disappointing to watch him continually smoke layups last week, but this week he left no doubt with some emphatic dunks and strong takes, finishing with 17 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 3 blocks. Jack Diconza chipped in with 8 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, and 1 block, but still can't seem to find his shot. Clearly a shooter, if he can find his touch, he adds another dimension to This is Beans' attack. Captain Jamie Druker unfortunately went down early with a lower leg injury (ankle? knee?), so hopefully he's ok and good to go for the rest of the season. In his brief time on the court, he came up with 3 assists and drew another charge, cementing him in the league lead with 2 on the season in only 2 games played.

Not A Dime Back Surges Late for the Win

Not A Dime Back didn't play nearly as well this week, but still look to be one of the early title favorites. While they missed shots early and couldn't quite generate the same absurd ball movement, these guys can clearly play (A division next season?). Chris Connor once again came out firing, putting up 19 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal. He only went three of nine from deep, so he has even more to offer, which should scare other teams in this division. John Luster came on strong at the end of the game to finish with 16 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals, once again setting the pace for his team. Andres Kontopidis returned after missing last week, adding 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block, but he missed some easy shots around the basket and in the mid-range and shot 17% from the free-throw line, so I expect his numbers to go way up. Either way, his impact was felt. Jeff Coulter only had 6 points, but added 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 5 steals, and 1 block, making his presence known all over the court and setting the tone on defense. The player of the game for NADB for me was definitely Marcus Giese. Last week he took a backseat in the scoring department, but this week he came out strong early on with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. He patrolled down low on both sides of the ball, and ultimately kept NADB in the game until the rest of the guys could find a rhythm and pull away.

Run'N'Gun played a strong game and kept it close despite their size disadvantage. Reuben Moses led the way on offense with 15 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assits, and 1 steal, but struggled from three (22%). Look for him to make some serious noise as he finds his shot and builds chemistry with his team. Captain Jesse Ozdamar added 9 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal, again hustling hard and outworking everyone on the court. He only put up six three's though, and he'll need to be more aggressive with his shooting if Run'N'Gun are going to go anywhere, especially if he's shooting well (50% this game). Also needing to be more aggressive is Nick Layman. I really love his game. His mid-range pull-up is near perfect, he's always hyper efficient, and he gets after it on defense. He finished with 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals, but frankly, he just needs to be more selfish and start jacking up shots. While it may not be his style of play, his team needs it. Zach McArthur chipped in 8 points, 2 boards, and 1 steal as well. Chris Lee only scored 2 points, but his his motor also got him 12 rebounds and 2 steals. He's another guy who could benefit from being a bit more aggressive on offense.

Overall this game went about as expected, but Run'N'Gun definitely have something brewing. If they figure it out, they can make a run for sure.

Shooters Shoot 52  Skelton's Boys 68

Skeltons Boys Pick Up Easy Win

Skelton's Boys are clearly a top three team to me, along with the Hartbreakers and NADB. Their team is almost perfectly balanced. Captain Doug Horan always plays well, today finishing with 18 points, 10 boards, 4 assists, and 2 steals (plus a steal against one of his own teammates, followed by him jacking up a long three)[he missed]. Erik Petit once again played very well, starting a bit slow but finishing with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal. He shot five of eight from three, and provides CT with a great scoring option at the two guard spot. Elijah Anderson is a bit of a wing/stretch-big hybrid, but he can really play. He also put up a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks, but he also went zero for three from deep, which I don't expect again. Travis Sinatro mostly took it easy this game, but the sharpshooter still put up 7 points, 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block. His defense and shooting make him a great piece on almost any team. Predicted scoring champion and MVP frontrunner Dante Egidio finished with 3 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. Jokes aside, Egidio is a great role player, consistenly putting up strong assist and steal numbers and often swinging momentum into CT's favor.

Shooters Shoot played a decent game today, but will need more firepower from more players if they want to make any games competitive. Chris Menz was definitely impressive, finshing with 23 points, 4 boards, 1 assist, and 2 steals. He has a nice shooting stroke, but can also get to the basket and finish around or over defenders. He's their best player, and will need someone else to step up to take some of the burden off of him offensively. Steve Lazarro played a strong game as well, finishing with 9 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. He put up some unorthodox floaters and push-shots, but he knows how to play and serves as a strong point guard for this team. Jake Konowitch added 9 points, 2 boards, and 1 steal, but shot zero for four from deep. I expect him to shoot better going forward, but I don't know if it's enough to make Shooters Shoot a contender. Newcomer Solomon LastName also looked good for Shooters Shoot, but I was told he was a fill in and would not be coming back. Nevertheless, he put up 4 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists (somehow), 1 steal, 1 block. The shifty guard couldn't buy a shot from outside, but other than that he was a strong contributor and could add a lot to this team.
