Gronk's Kittens 52 Hoop Heights 27
Playoff Preview and Picks
Sorry fellas for my delay in write ups. I was away drinking away my troubles on a far off beach and have since been swamped with regular work nonsense. But in exchange for my late wrap-ups, here is a little preview for tonight’s playoff action.
After scoring a few games over the last couple weeks I feel that I have enough of a sample size to riddle you all with my basketball judgement, with most likely limited accuracy I might add.
Game 1: Gronk's Kittens vs. Hoop Heights
The furry Gronk’s are littered with long, active forwards. Leading them to the best statical defense in the leaque, giving up just 40 points a game. Nathan Vadnergrift, Mike Keohan, and Luke Hehsenfeld laggressive are all aggressive defending the painted area and the boards. Max Warren also gives them some size down low, but adds that much needed scoring touch. He has helped lead the way in capturing a bit of surprising a second seed.
The inside/outside threats of Tim Flynn and Brandon jackson will certainly test Gronk’s ability to defend bigs that can stretch it out to the perimeter. The supporting case of Hoop Heights has certainly been improving as Jimmy Huang exploded for 15 points last week. But I think the Kittens control the boards and challenge enough shots inside to try and limit Flynn and Jackson to outside looks. Both can create and force their way inside off the dribble. Will be a good matchup. Gronks Kittens took the fist match up 43-36 and I see a spirited but similar outcome.
Game 1: Meketa Investment Group vs. Beef Wellington
Meketa only has one player averaging double figures in Yianni Grupen. But the sharp shooter is accompanied by 4 other guys all in the 8.5-9.9 range that speaks to a level of balance on offense that can keep pace with Bee’fs uber athletic swing guard Sebastion Arrate. I saw Arrarte almost put up 40 this season, in one of the more complete offenseive performances I’ve witnessed in CAC. That feat alone makes me almost side with Wellington, and I liked what I saw from playmaker Aaron Singh. But Brandon Colon’s ability to snag loose balls and assert himself on defense and on offensive in middle part of the floor will slow down the Wellington attack.
Beef Wellington took the first one by nearly twenty. Who ever win’s I don’t think it will be my more than ten. I think Maketa just dictates the style and pace too much. They win by 5.
8:30 PM Hot Sauce Committee vs. Boston Park Plaza
Hot Sauce has been on absolute tear as of late. Their chemistry the last few weeks and the resulting ball movement has made me toggle more assists in one game for one team than I do all night. The Shooting of Nate Weitzer and Kahlid Lakanwal has been consistent. The rebounding of JR Manneta and Derek Erion has been basically unstoppable. The mid range playmaking of Will Otto has been superb and Jamie Spinner just putting up 35. But its the attacking and passing of Alex Said in semi transition that has this squad hummin’.
Love the energy and passion that Boston Park Plaza play with. But this one won’t be much of a contest late but definitely a competitive, hard fought game.
9:30 PM The Kekumbahs vs. Leo's Legends
For Leo’s Legends to have a sub .500 record is completely ridiculous. I understand that they’ve been struggling to get five and numbers have been tight. Zan Smith is a monster and always a threat. Josh Ramos is about as good of a knock down shooter that we have and Alex Beaton averages 17, 7 boards and nearly 5 helpers a game. Those three alone are about as prolific a scoring bunch as shown up and down the Hot Sauce Roster. Also Brian Albere and Matt Thompson are two of my favorite ‘do the little things’ types of guys. Not sure of how the playoff picture will work out. But I think Legends can go on a roll and challenge the Hottest of all Sauces.
Kekumbah’s Thomas Leatherman might have a big night and give the Legends some trouble inside. But even with a commanding double double performance, I don’t think it will be enough to outpace Leo’s gang.
Meketa Investment Group 35 Beef Wellington 47
Hot Sauce Committee 114 Boston Park Plaza 50
The Kekumbahs 46 Leo's Legends 74
