SIC dealt early BLow to title hopes

GAME THREAD: https://twitter.com/CACBasketball/status/1440083086838951937?s=20

I was so bummed about the Healey School wifi not being able to handle the live-stream. I talked to the janitors after the game and allegedly the there was some maintenance being done, but I’ll believe that only if it works for me on Wednesday night. Once we get back into the CH-CH you’ll be able to rewatch the game and your fan bases will be able to watch in real time.

It was a good thing for Shoot It Coward that Harry couldn’t watch and critique them from afar, because there was a LOT he could complain about. I mean look, what can I say about this game that the score doesn’t?

B’Low came into this one unhappy with their preseason ranking and punished SIC. It helped that non of SIC’s bigs were in attendance. Hof did his best to hold up to the onslaught of muscle bound post moves. He earned an “Atta Boy!” from Amir on the sideline at one point, but I don’t think that Steve Sloboda (24 points, 7 boards) and Graham Clark (14 points, 8 boards) would have had the field day in the paint that they did if Manny Sutton was there. Anyone who calls himself MANCHILD is not to be messed with.

BUT B’Low found no such resistance this week. They played a great team game, feeding each other when they spotted a mismatch and raced out to a 42-26 halftime lead.

Joe Daniels-Mulholland (16 points, 11 boards, 4 assists) has put together a team that looks like it will run non-stop and punish teams in transition. Sure the team’s 1-9 effort from downtown could be a red flag but that’s only if they’re going to play any close games. Is there a team in the league that can match-up with their front court and make that happen? We’ll have to wait and see.

A 17-2 run to open the second half put the outcome beyond doubt, but somehow the next game’s onlookers commented that the game seemed competitive up and down the court despite the 30 point spread. By that time Hof had hit a few 3s and MacDonald (13 points, 8 boards) was earning a trip to the FT line every other possession. Unfortunately for Ben, I did decide to do the write-up this week though!

I say this every season but no team is as good, or as bad, as they look in week 1. Except Jamil's ROOKS team in the 5v5 Draft in the Summer. They were as good as advertised. But I suppose there needs to be exceptions that prove the rule. Anyway, I saw a lot of the same things over and over again, get used to it. Everyone regroup and we'll see you next week!

Long Pigs Rally in final minutes to upend Girth Brooks

GAME THREAD:  https://twitter.com/CACBasketball/status/1440097309115699208?s=20

What a game, what a rally! The Long Pigs closed the game on a 14-1 run to shock Girth Brooks and steal a week 1 win. Since the return of league play, Drew’s teams have made it a habit of building leads then blowing them, so it must have felt nice for the squad to have reversed that trend to start a new season.

I was looking forward to this game a lot and it did not disappoint. Cooper Ainge (24 points, 4-11 3s) steps onto Nate Bertrand’s team shooting 46% from downtown and coming off an A 5v5 championship in his young CAC career. Expectations were sky high as Bertrand (20 points, 3-11 3s) would need another go-to scorer to compete in this league and had signed a good one.

The duo didn’t disappoint in the opening minutes as Nate hit his first 3 shots of the night and Cooper casually swished a long 3 as he walked up the court unmolested. That didn’t happen often, Garrett Stanowicz (20 points, 9 boards) hounded him most of the night, but if Coop saw an opening, he took it.

This game was tight from the get go and the Long Pigs had a 32-31 advantage at the half. Guy Pistone (10 points, 4 assists) was steering the offense. For whatever reason though, it disappeared for most of the second half. The Long Pigs only generated 9 points over the 12 minutes coming out of the half. Bertrand took advantage and he and Coop helped the team build a double digit lead. Those two did all the scoring, but there were obviously other contributors! Nick Osborne (7 points, 11 boards) battled with JMul (3 points, 7 boards) on the block. But if you want to see your name in the write-ups, you put the ball in the hoop.

Or I supposed you can foul out like Lucas Reeves (2 points, 9 boards) did, despite lead official Mark Parks calling an earlier foul on a teammate to keep him in the game. Yea, Lucas really had 6 fouls called on him in this one, but I won’t hold that against him next week.

It looked like Girth Brooks was going to cruise to a week 1 win. They led 59-49 with 3 minutes to go and all they had to do was take care of the ball and hit a few free throws.

They did neither.

Tim Lens (19 points, 3-8 3s, 3 steals) saved his best for last. During the ensuing Rally he hit a 3, poked away an errant pass and threw his body on the ground for a loose ball. They forced a 10 second back court violation call! A 10 second call!

AT CAC!

The whole team was fired up when two possessions later Girth had to take a time out and promptly turned the ball over anyway coming out of it.

For the game winner, I knew what move Lens was going to use to get the game winning bucket because I’ve seen him play so much. Oh and he ripped my heart out 7 years ago

I knew the sequence coming once he put his head down and took that first hard dribble with his right hand and just 10 seconds left.

drive. plant. spin. fade.

As the ball hung on the rim and bounced up in the air twice I knew it was falling down and in. He didn’t need four bounces like Kawhi, two was enough. When Girth couldn’t get a bucket on the other end, I knew Stanowicz would seal it with a couple free throws.

I did NOT know Coop was going to miss the half court heave at the end. That thing was on target, just a little short.

Hell of a way to kick off the season by both teams!

ORANGE 81  Tomahawks 69

ORANGE 3 point barrage too much for Tomahawks

GAME THREAD: https://twitter.com/CACBasketball/status/1440112770343653379?s=20

I love me some (mostly) rookie squads. Everyone feeling out their opponent, but also trying to remember at least one other teammate’s name that they don’t know. Always good times!

ORANGE jumped out to a bit of an early lead as captain John Kelly (22 points, 6-15 3s) hit an early 3 and immediately checked out of the game. I was dubious as to the nature of the substitution, but it got Allister Williams (25 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists) onto the court, and that ended up being a good thing. Allister looked right at home taking the ball to the hoop in his CAC Debut, but he was also able to step outside and knock down some 3s. He led all scored with 12 points in the first half as ORANGE took a 35-25 lead into the break.

From that point on, the offenses loosened up in a big way. Guys were done worrying about taking the perfect shot, and settled for the first good shot they saw. And let’s be honest, any shot a CACer sees is a good one, so these teams will fit right in. The Tomahawks hung around thanks to the unorthodox scoring style of Taylor Chadwich (15 points, 6 boards). I’m not even really sure how to describe it. One second he has the ball and you’re look, we’ll that guy should pass, and the next he’s put the ball in the hoop. The D and I were flummoxed!

But ORANGE kept them at arm’s length. Ben Childs (15 points, 2-5 3s) brought some of his Space & Pace championship swagger with him to the ORANGE crew this season. As huge of an impact as Allister’s near triple double had on the team, Ben’s steady presence was just as big. Eric Allen (10 points) found his way to double figures in this one as well.

Even when Bendan McGough (17 points, 5-8 3s) started to go bananas from downtown in the middle of this game, nothing was going to prevent ORANGE from getting that week 1 win! Back to Back 3s from John Kelly with 3 minutes to go put this game out of reach for good. As a team ORANGE shot an impressive 14-28 from distance, easily the best mark in the league. I don’t expect them to shoot 50% from 3 all season long, but they have already outplayed their preseason rankings. What jerk put them at #6?? That guy has no idea what he’s talking about.
