Seal Teams Title Defense off an running

Welcome to Week 1 of CAC Basketball’s Summer 21 #B5v5Arlington season! I’m Tibbs and I’ll be your MC for most of the season. I’m bound to head to the cape for some long weekends and might miss an occasional night. I know you’ll miss me. Before we get started, make sure you’re following along on twitter. On the weeks that I, uh, forget, to post write-ups, the Game Threads will be a great way to experience the games how I do in real time. Also, make sure to read all the write-ups in your league ! How else will you scout your future opponents?

GAME THREAD: https://twitter.com/CACBasketball/status/1405649963724513282?s=20

Seal Team 69 kicked off their title defense (I know they won the East last season, but they were the best team across all 3 B 5v5s, so you’ll have to deal with me saying this all season long) with a resounding win. They jumped out to a double digit lead early, slacked off for a second and then ruthlessly finished off the Grapes of Rathjens. Quinn Connelly (25 points, 10 boards) and Caleb Godin (10 points, 8 assists) had a great 2 man game going. Actually, looking at Quinn’s historical stats and what #5 did last night, I don’t think they’re the same person. I’ll investigate and update at a later time…

Like I mentioned, Seal let up for a second and that’s why the Grapes of Rathjens made a little run in early in the second half. Down 18, they kept pushing the pace. Mike W (8 points, 6 boards) and Kaan (8 points) both hit a couple buckets to make things interesting. Most weeks the dump off plays their ran to Luke Rathjens (8 points, 18 boards) will work. However Seal Team had so many bodies they could throw at him and into passing lanes that his catches and looks were never clean or easy.  Against GOONSQUAD missing one of their bigs next week (see below) well it should work very, very often.

But that’s next week! This way, take your L against the champs. Nothing wrong with that.

7th Floor Crew 82  TAP Allstars 79

Taggert drops 9 3s in debut, 7FC wins a close one

GAME THREAD: https://twitter.com/CACBasketball/status/1405664547969683460?s=20

7th Floor Crew and TAP All-Stars both came into this game looking to make a statement. Both walked away knowing that they’ll be able to compete at the top of this league. Both teams move the ball well and trust each other. Clearly the core of these teams have played together for a while. They combined for 38 assists on 65 buckets, an absurd 58% assist percentage! That’s good in general and GREAT in a CAC B league.

In one of the more ridiculous first impressions i’ve born witness to, Harrison Taggert (33 points, 9-19 3s) absolutely torched the TAP zone defense for the first 33 minutes of this game.

Taggert hit contested 3s, open 3s, 3s where he was clearly landing on someone and not getting a foul call. Until TAP switched to man (the last 11 minutes of the game) there was no chance in hell they were slowing him down.

7th Floor Crew was able to build a double digit halftime lead thanks to his hot shooting. With guys like Phil Leotsakos (12 points, 16 boards, 5 offensive) and Paul Brooks (12 points, 15 board, 8 offensive) able to clean up misses from any and everywhere, 7th Floor Crew is going to be a tough team to take down.

But TAP tried, even short-handed. David Lorden (22 points, 13 boards) said in the post-game press conference that thought he could have done more scoring inside, even giving up many an inch to the 7FC bigs. Mark Schulze (19 points, 5 steals) is a great addition to the team, but his 0-7 effort from downtown made me actually yearn for Gary Lorden (MIA) and his streaky shooting.

No one should ever do that.

Still, there’s clearly no quit in the TAP crew. Facing a big hole they kept attacking the hoop and not just chucking threes. Tre Tipton (16 points, 7 assists) had a big hand in that. He was carving up the D and dumping off late passes when help arrived. Things got tight late.

John Pisacreta (9 points, 9 assists) made sure 7th Floor wrapped this up late, hitting a couple pivitol free throws. I'm curious about how the Crew's bigs will be officiated this season. The team didn't take a single free throw until the final 2 minutes when TAP had to foul. The Crew was one of just two teams that didn't attempt double digit free throws last night and the other team was blown out by 53. So that's something to just key an eye on as we move through the season.

GOON SQUAD 73  Stallions 62

OD Bros carry GoonSquad past the Stallions

GAME THREAD: https://twitter.com/CACBasketball/status/1405679804238766085?s=20

Ever since their brawl in week 7 (8?) of the Spring 2021 season, Goon Squad has been on a mission to let their play on the court do all their talking (and fighting). They closed out the season strong, won a playoff game and gave the eventual league champs hell in their semi-final game. They certainly gave Space & Pace a tougher game than Big Tuna did in the Finals!

They kicked off the Summer season with a good win over the rookie squad Stallions. The O’Donnell brothers were on point in this one, combining for 30 points and 8 assists. Early season games aren't 'must win' but this could develop into a nice little rivalry as these teams will face off again this season, probably with key playoff position on the line.

But let's talk about the rookie squad. I respect a guy that rocks a jersey with his name on it. Quinton Dale (19 points, 11 boards, 5-12 3s) had a really nice jumper, but I’m more interested in what led to his break-up with the 7th Floor Crew. He was rocking the team jersey last night, so clearly the break-up wasn’t mutual. Was he singing Deja Vu to Kyle Beaulieu during the 7 PM game?? Was he blaring Driver’s License as he circled FIHO looking for parking? Sorry those are the only Olivia Rodrigo break-up songs I know about. My 7 year old hasn’t listened to anything else for the last month.

What I’m saying is that I’m really old guys, I’m just trying to keep up with all you young whipper snappers in the league. In reality, the last paragraph and a half stems from Erv DeJesus (17 points, 3-10 3s) asking me how old Danny O’Donnell (18 points, 7 boards, 5 assists) was as he was lighting the Stallions up in the second half. And honestly, if new teams are thinking a guy like Danny is old, I don’t want to know how old they think I am. That’s just mean. Respect your elders.

Danny’s shooting, combined with Ric Bonhomme’s usual yeoman’s work in the paint (16 points, 8 boards, 3 steals) broke open a close game at halftime. In an effort to shed last season’s shooting woes, Danny Murphy (6 points, 2-3 3s) bought a new jersey and he hit a 3 in each half as a result. He’s going to need to take a LOT more next week, as Ric and Corey are out against the Grapes of Rathjens next week in yet another pivotal early season match-up. We're like college football around here. EVERY.GAME.MATTERS.

Late in this one Joe D’Amore (15 points, 7 boards) threw down a very nice dunk on a secondary fast-break and it seemed to spark something in the Stallions. It’s a shame there were down 15 at the time because they led a furious rally the game’s final minutes and actually had the hole down to 5. They’re going to need to find a way to bottle and replicate the effort they gave for that 4 minute stretch in the half against every other team in this league. There are NO easy wins!

Hartbreakers 38  AB Alums 91

AB Alums blow out Hartbreakers

GAME THREAD: https://twitter.com/CACBasketball/status/1405693709992275974?s=20

Guys, I say this multiple times. No team is as good, or as bad, as they first appear in week 1. This is especially true in the Hartbreakers case, running only 5 guys and notably missing Tucker Landy whose official designation in the week 1 injury report was ‘rest’. And we thought Kawhi pushed that to the limit…But yea, captain Tim DeMatteo (4 points, 8 boards) asked that we not hold this game against his team going forward, and I am more than happy to pretend it never happened for them. Oliver Hart (11 points, 2-11 3s) probably wishes it too. Kid has seen better shooting days!

What is there to say about a game where the box score says it all? It was the night cap which means it was guaranteed to be a shotshow. When the Alums raced out to a 21-4 lead and spent more time chatting with me (while on the bench and on the court) than playing any defense I knew we were getting out of the building on time. Whew.

Ben Shamah (8 points, 7 assists) was making sure I got all his assists, Sam Issenberg (11 points, 16 boards) was throwing his body into the air all night long. Sometimes he came down with the ball, sometimes he didn’t. Sometimes he landed on his feet, mostly he didn’t. He’s no cat.

Jack Niemann (11 points, 3-6 3s) and Ryan Delaney (9 points) both got more shots than they’re used to see on a team with one of the highest usage* guys on the league in it. Damn, I forget his name though. Oh well guess I can’t mention him in the write-up.

The biggest difference between how this season will shake out and last is the return of Kevin Lafrancis (23 points, 14 boards). There are a lot of bigs in this league  so his presence gives them a fighting chance most weeks. But he doesn’t just shoot, he passes out of the post too! In fact that Alums whipped the ball around to the tune of 21 assists, and that gets them on this stat-sheet

Assist/Shooting Sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MMizzqaOm74MA_wmybbky7n3oIRU--MQSQZ6DZQJ3-c/edit#gid=0

I feel like there’s someone I’m forgetting to mention on the Alums, but I just can’t think of who it could be.

For the Hartbreakers, just Men In Black this one.

Mib Men In Black GIF - Mib MenInBlack WillSmith GIFs

Is that a thing the kids in these leagues know? The original is now 24 years old and i KNOW i saw a bunch of players last night that weren’t even that old. So yea, fingers crossed the tiktok generation knows that reference.

Honestly at this point I’m too old to care

*I’m being polite
