Jimmy V go off as GMB upsets the Llamas in week 1

Sorry about the delay guys, going forward I’ll have the Healey write-ups posted by Friday. Bit of a weird week 1. I had a ref bang out with the flu in the middle of the afternoon so had to split up my 2 man crew. I know it wasn’t easy with just 1 official last week, don’t worry, that won’t be the case going forward. ALSO, read all the write-ups each week, i’ll often put helpful nuggets in them about the league, expectations etc. Here’s the first. PLEASE WEAR CAC JERSEYS! You want all your stats, right? Well it helps Jamaal and I track them if we can see the CAC jersey with the double sided number. That way we remember what you do and can mark it down as you’re jogging back down the floor. So yea, please pick up jerseys @ CAC (215 First St - Cambridge) before next week’s games!

You can also follow along DURING the games. I live tweet with the #CACMidLife hashtag as I’m sitting at the scoreboard. It seems like a lot, doesn’t it? Run the board, keep the stats, eat some food, text the wife to ask about the kids day AND tweet? Yes, I know, I’m the #beststatkeeperalive

Anyway I’m pumped to be back and covering a league where I know more than a few faces. I had Team GMB (previously “Radio Shaq”) as big underdogs in this one. The llamas are chalk full of former college ball players and GMB was shorthanded, relying on a sub (hi Nick!) and missing some of their size.

It didn’t matter as they raced out to a 16-8 lead behind Jimmy Fischer’s aggressive play. He took it right AT the Llamas big men and was rewarded with a bunch of trips to the free throw line. Speaking of the early game play, yes, the 6 PM game starts RIGHT at 6 PM. I heard some nameless player grumbling about that after he arrived late. We gotta be out by 10 so that means we GOTTA start on time.  Anyway, Jimmy did enough to let Vasillios get hot, and I mean HOT from downtown. V hit 4 of 7 attempts in the first half alone as GMB was up 48-25 at the break.

In the second half, Pat Dinnen shoot off the winter rust to the tune of 19 points. While he and Jesse Coulon led the comeback, SOME players were grousing about the calls. I noted that we’ll have 2 refs going forward, right? I appreciate all of your limited patience this pas week, really i did.

Just when I thought the Llamas might come all the way back, Liam hit a DAGGER 3 from the corner off a Jimmy assist to push the lead to 80-68 with 3 minutes left. If that possession comes up empty, who knows who this game would have turned out.

All in all a great debut by Team GMB and a half of one by the Llamas. They scored 56 second half points and that should scare the bejesus out of the rest of the league!

Shorthanded SVB get key week 1 win

Did you all see my notes prior to the recap of game #1 above? Read them!

SVB came into this game shorthanded but got a stunning performance from Matt Hill to hold off the Rusty Nails and earn a win in week 1. Hill came into the game just 34-94 over the course of his 48 game #CACreer from downtown but ge came out firing in this one. Hill hit 4 of 7 attempts from deep in the opening frame and he allowed SVB to stay close while the Rusty Nails struggled with their own offense, shooting just 5-17 from deep as a squad.

They were launching so much that SVB only had one team foul against them, despite some of their bigs (looking at you Marino) throwing their arms around whenever someone ventured into the paint. Mike Novak is not one to keep quiet so I’m honestly surprised he didn’t ask about the foul disparity MORE during the game. As I mentioned in the previous write-up, we WILL have 2 officials all season long despite last week’s snafu.

Without Hill’s 17 first half points, there’s no way SVB is within striking distance when Matt Mathias finally remembers he’s an MVP candidate and started playing like one. Mathias led a 14-0 run that turned around the game. SVB went from down 7 to up 7 in the span of 4 minutes. Mathias was scoring at will and dropping dimes AND converting from the FT line. Get you an MVP that can do all 3.

Down the stretch as the Nails kept it close it may have SEEMED like they shot the ball better in the second half, but they did not. They were 5-17 from downtown in both halves and never unlocked the freewheeling offense I know they’re capable of. Both of these teams look like they could be contenders this season!

The Slom Donkers 38  Colonials 86

As I mentioned elsewhere, always read ALL the write-ups in the league, as I often drop important info in them that you all should know and I hate a copy/paste writeup!

Our lone blowout of the night came at the expense of the rookie Slom Donkers squad. My spell check officially can’t stand these guys and neither could the rims at the Healey in week 1. The Slom Donkers rolled 10 deep and it took them more than 17 minutes to score their second bucket of the game. They trailed 42-11 at the break and things could have been a lot worse.

But in the second half it took them just 5 minutes to score 13 more points! (Seriously follow my twitter people, you’ll get these live tweet gems

But the Colonials weren’t letting up. Tej was hunting for a triple double and Lafrancis was determined to get his MIP campaign off to a hot start. I thought he was going to get a 20/20 night, but alas he hit JUST enough layups, that he didn’t have to also rebound before putting in, to get there. And sure, Harrison had a monster night too, blah blah blah you can check your stats yourselves.

On the other side, Eric Babbitt hit a couple 3s, and honestly they had a lot of shots rim out. 6-22 from downtown isn’t going to impress anyone (especially me) but you can’t score if you don’t shoot, so keep shooting boys! Oh and work on the line-ups. You might want to have Colin and Erik out there together more. The highlight of the Donkers night was easily when team captain Pat Ryan was forced to leave the game with a bleeding cut.

“How’s that a highlight tibbs?!”

Well I’ll tell you, it’s because he was forced to admit that no, he wasn’t playing against cat woman out there, he simply cut his hand 'choppin broccoli' the previous night and reopened the wound. Made for a good laugh on the sidelines!

I always tell everyone that your team is never as bad OR as good as it looks week 1, so I hope the Colonials keep their egos in check (unless they’re sending out missives on twitter, I love that) and the Donkers keep their heads up and fight hard in week 2.

Winter Has Come.....

OBA was giving NO LOVE!

from Tip you can tell the chemistry OBA have. From no look passes to back screens it was obv this wasnt there first rodeo. TIM Jr & Craig led the way for 3s lookin like the splash bros. As a team out rebounded LH by a good a margin setting up for alot of second chance points. LH did have a little fight in them in the 2nd hafl after some rust was off but it didnt helo much with Jay grabbing almost every missed shot 10 DEFENSIVE REBOUNDS!!!

LHs' Ian and Brendan were the bright spots for the team. Shooting and Rebounding respectively. I can see them definetly getting some wins this season just need to stop second guessing themselves. and ATTACK THE BASKET!!

Dirty Jim & the Boys 69  Killer Three's 56

Cory Stratford keeps getting better

The Killer 3s shot themselves in the foot in week 1, connecting on just 12 of 39 attempts, or 30%, OR just barely better than the rookie squad’s 27% (6-22) in their beatdown.

NOT GREAT!

At least this team lets it fly. Josh Wong opened the game by missing 3s on the first two possessions of the game. After a 1 possession reprieve he was back to letting it fly, missing two more. If you think an 0-4 start in 120 seconds was going to slow his roll, you were WRONG.

Dirty Jim & the Boys took advantage of all the missed 3s AND the Killer 3s lack of D to build a solid first half lead. Twice in the opening frame Tom Ryan took the ball out of bounds under the hoop. On both of those possessions Cory Stratford ran a simple curl off a screen to get open under the hoop for a lay-up. It worked twice!!

Dirty Jim & the Boys were rolling into the break. I mentioned in my preseason preview (seriosly people, join the Slack Channel) that Stratford was ready to continue his evolution from 'nice player' to 'growing into a second banana' to 'mvp candidate' and I was NOT wrong. He was hitting everything AND passing the ball. Yea, get you an MVP candidate who can do both! They were up 8 at the break and looking to blow this game open.

Instead of a potential blowout, though, Max Gaegauf went back to back from downtown to keep things close! Dude hardly looked at the hoop in the first half but said, fuck it, if everyone else is shooting I’m going to let if fly too.

Rookie Bryan Abou Rjailly was able to help Stratford keep the 3s at bay. This team will be tough to guard with a lot of guys capable of handling the ball. They picked up 22 assists on just 26 buckets, a hell of a feat! Anything over 50% is good in this league, in part because unselfish play leads to easy buckets and ALSO because of stat keeper error. Not me thought, as mentioned in the opening writeup of the season I’m the #beststatkeeperalive.

Wong finally got a couple shots to fall in the second half and the Killer 3s kept the game close. I expected a bit more from George Phillips in this one, but the warm-up dunking Gumby was clearly struggling all night long. Was he hungover? Did he not pick-up a ball during the 6 week offseason? George is an MVP candidate and he was held to just 6 points and 6 boards! Sure he credited the DJ&TB defense while the game was going on, but you can only get away with so many hacks boefre a guy that talented can score on you. I think he’ll have a much better week 2 and anyone who sleeps on him is a fool.

Every time DJ&TB needed a bucket, guess what they ran? That damn out of bounds play. In a 6 point game with 7 minutes left it worked for the third time. ONE MINUTE LATER it worked again, but Cory biffed the lay-up. As a big guy who loves cheap assists like that I was in awe of Tom’s willingness to go to it again and again. Hell of a win for DJ&TB and this is shaping up to be a fun league! See you all again on Wednesday.

TALE OF TWO HALVES : PRESSURE MAKES DIAMONDS

Patting myslef on the back with the 2ND HALF resurgence of team Microsoft, going into the 2nd half (38-11) and with a little help from late arrivals this team managed to out score J&THB in 2ND half but in all reality the game was over in the 1st 5 minutes of the game.

side note: I went up to Aiden after the game to question his shooting form! pure comedy my bad Aiden I just had to ask bro.

Tim led all scorers with 16 setting the pace for J&THB. my guy Aiden leading the the way with Assits. J&THB can be on cloud 9 for the next week we'll see if they can continue the winning.
