Thompson leads Shimmy Past WeKnowDis

Welcome to the Summer 21 #CoEd5v5 season! I’m Tibbs and I’ll be covering all the WeKnowDis games at FIHO for the season. When you’re here make sure you’re following the #CoEd5v5 hashtag! The tweeting will be much more efficient next week when i get the wifi password and

TWITTER GAME THREAD: https://twitter.com/CACBasketball/status/1404563625587744768?s=20

So let’s get the season started! In what might be one of the best games of the season, WeKnowDis jumped all over Shimmy Changas early, but Jane Thompson (21 points, 5-10 3s) showed her championship mettle by dragging her team back in the second half to win this one. That’s right, you didn’t think I remembered that Jane was a member of the Spring 2018 Bobcats coed champs?! She was on her way to another championship in the Winter 2020 season as Shimmy was 7-2 before the league was canceled. She certainly put the rest of the league on notice that to get the title, you’re going to have to go through her and the Shimmy

quick pause, I just heard “kwahilight” on the TNT broadcast, and is that a thing people say? It was a nice dunk but come on, that seems like a stretch.

Anyway, Demitri Bakolas (6 points, 2-5 3s) made an immediate splash by hitting both of his attempts from downtown in the opening minutes. He and Carlene Kluge (18 points) carried the offense in the early going. Carlene has that CP3 pull-up from the right elbow that is absolutely unguardable. If you’re going to insist on playing zone, and most teams do, you have GOT to find a way to bother her before she catches the ball. If you don’t, you might as well head out of bounds to collect the made bucket and start your offense early.

WeKnowDis led 30-23 at the break and the team had 11 assists on 13 buckets. The passing was so crisp, one of the guys waiting to play the next game said “I wish i played on teams that passed that well.” But if Tommy Kahana was on a team like that, the ball WOULDN”T move that well. He’d stop it dead.

But anyway, it was damn impressive and the only reason the lead wasn’t bigger was because Jimmy McRae (13 points, 8 boards) hit a couple buckets in the paint and kick started the Shimmy Offense in the final minutes of the half. We won't mention his missed 3s though. Seems silly to do that!

Whatever he did worked as suddenly Evan Kodra (13 points, 16 boards, 5 assists) remember he could be aggressive on the block. Did brother Austin give him a pep talk at halftime? Am I just looking for a way to mention my former scorekeeper as much as possible in week 1? The answer to both is probably yes.

As Shimmy chipped away, WeKnowDis seemed to forget about Carlene’s automatic bucket shooter. Or they got nervous? I doubt that though. Have I mentioned that the WeKnowDis ladies are former D2 national champs? I don’t think WE at CAC basketball are intimidating to the women who made deep college playoff runs.

Jane put her stamp on this game with a quick little 7 point run by herself to give Shimmy the lead late in the game. You can read about some of the specifics on that twitter thread. Once Shimmy took the lead they knew better than to give it back. They built up a quick little 6 point lead that was enough to hang on down the stretch, despite a late 3 from WeKnowDis team captain Kelsey Roberson (11 points, 3 assists) and a couple turnovers. Kelsey had a chance to send the game to OT but her heave in the final seconds was just off the mark.

All in all this was a hell of a way to start the season! I can’t wait for the rematch in week 6 when these teams meet again.
