I’ve heard all your wonderful compliments about the level of coverage the Corporations underlings have been providing this season. The truth is, we outsourced the writeups and coverage to a contractor in India and let’s just say the quality of his writing was not up to our standards. We’ve been attempting to train him and thanks to my tremendous personal dedication he was making great strides! Unfortunately, we just found he has been diagnosed with coronavirus so we were forced to terminate our contract (and his health insurance) since he can no longer provide services to us.

I will be taking back over for coverage immediately

Let’s start with the playoff picture:

Locks

Crab Boys (6-0) – They are firmly entrenched as the favorites right now. They are deep 1-6 with 6 players who could start on basically every other team (yes even you Roberts). On any given week a different player can take advantage of their matchup and have a big game. Their leading scorers each week have been Kerr, Ganley, Kerr, Vladi, Kerr, Swecker. Kerr is their Mr. Reliable given that he’s their best 3-point threat and a perfect kick out for Joe/Sweck/Brian who prefer to drive and kick. The defensive specialist lineup of Kerr/Sweck/Joe/Brian is fully switchable against just about everyone. I can’t wait till the playoffs when 2 of their key players are missing and they get sent home early again! Wouldn’t be the first time Roberts’ preferred candidate lost due to low turnout!

Redeem Team (5-1) – The one blemish looks more like a fluke than an indictment of their weaknesses. All that stands in their way of being equally favorited to win the title is Keith’s desire to attain a fresh new pair of basketball sneakers (that he has since told me absolutely suck). Theoretically with all 6 guys present they are a match for Crab Boys. Kap is being asked to bear a pretty heavy load as the primary ball handler, shot creator and his self-appointed role as the “keep my teammates under control” guy. What I mean is that he’s constantly yelling at Cavano to slow down, Keith to not be a black hole in the post, and for Kofi to stay always engaged. I’m not sure those guys always NEED to hear that, but quiet Lyon certainly isn’t going to yell at anyone.

Should be In

A4747 (3-3) – They ran into an extremely motivated Corp last week, so I don’t hold that loss against them. It does however put them in a more precarious situation playoff wise. Luckily, they control their own destiny with games against 3 of the 4 teams below them in the standings. Win those games and they are the 3 seed. Beat Crab Boys this week and maybe they can essentially move into lock/contender status. Is there a better offensive set in the league than Struck setting a high ball screen for PK and Pat either gets a clean 3, drives and kicks to B-walsh, or dishes to Struck who now has a complete mismatch and can go to work in the post? They’ve been running that play since the Spin ‘Em days in B1 5v5. They crushed Team Lock Down running that play for 40 minutes in week 5 I believe.

Work to do

Flight Crew (3-3) – The good news for Flight Crew is that they’ve played their way into sole possession of the final playoff spot. They’ve surrounded Hof with length, defense and efficient scorers who don’t need 20 shots to be effective. Noel has stepped up and filled the hole in the middle with his rebounding and defense, and Jessie is the high ceiling bench scorer who can show up in sweatpants, not sub in or take off said pants until the 10 minute mark, yet immediately get buckets and steals. He’s been so fun to watch I can’t stress enough. The Bad news – that 1 game lead could evaporate in the next 3 weeks since they play Crab Boys and Redeem Team back to back, then head into a showdown with A4747.

Boardman Gets Paid (2-4) – They have severely underperformed record wise, with losses to all 4 teams above them in the standings. That 2-0 start is a distant memory, much like the Flint Tropics dynasty of old. Since then thieve progressively been getting worse, with losses by 1, 9, 12 and 16. Folks, that’s called a #TREND. As unfavorable as the schedule looks for Flight Crew, Boardman are in a good position to move up the standings with back to back games against the collectively 2-10 Corp/Lock Down. These are not automatic wins, but they certainly are must win games if Billy intends to get his team to the playoffs. They key for them is Jacob Moore. He’s got a great looking stroke but the numbers (30% from 3) haven’t been good. I think he’s not assertive enough looking for his shot, Billy likely disagrees.

The Corporation (1-5) – We’re not eliminated, but the 0-5 start has made making the playoffs nearly impossible. The opportunity is there, we need to win out against Board Man, Lock Down and Flight Crew. Not impossible since they are the bottom 3 teams besides us. Did I mention we already lost to all 3? Yea. If we win those games we are 4-5 heading into a final game showdown with Crab Boys. Maybe Roberts will lose on purpose so they can play us in the first round of the playoffs? I can only hope. What really sucks is that Clarke and I took 3 weeks to learn how to run a pick and roll together properly and now I feel like we are really fucking unstoppable at it. Just ask A47. We also finally started getting Fraher going. Too little too late?

Team Lock Down (1-5) – Is that Frank Malsbendens music???? Frank filling in reminds me of when in pro wrestling your favorite wrestler was getting his ass kicked in the ring by like 4-5 dudes and you were sitting there begging for someone to run out and help them. You had a certain guy in mind like the Undertaker, Stone Cold, the Rock etc. Some superstar would surely come save him from further punishment. Then the lights go on and the music hits and some absolute jobber comes out like the Hurricane or X-pac or some other scrub ass wrestler who’s going to run in the ring and immediately get tombstone or power bombed through a table. Frank is that guy.

Awards Race

MVP Contenders: Kevin Swecker/Chris Kerr, Ryan Hof, Pat Kelley, Jake Struck, Lyon Van Voorhis, Kevin Clarke, Marc Gasser-Wingate

Favorite: Honestly, no one has separated themselves from the pack. Everyone has a flaw or 2 that I can point to.

Rookie of the Year Contenders: Jacob Moore, Chris Cavano, Ryan Noel

Favorite: Early on Jacob was far and away the favorite but Boardmans’ 4 game losing streak and Jakes decline in shooting efficiency has opened it up. Noel could grab this thing by seasons end especially if they make the playoffs.

OPoY Contenders: Ryan Hof, Jeff Yeakley, Kevin Swecker/Chris Kerr Pat Kelley, Chris Kerr, Nick Mazzeo, KAP

Favorite: Right now, its Hof. He could go off or plummet given the week so its still up for grabs

DPoY Contenders: Kofi Williams, Joe Hoerner, Mike Sydorko, Kevin Clarke, Ryan Noel

Favorite: Its gotta be Kofi. He can guard any position at a very high level. From Hof on the perimeter to Struck in the post. Joe is a close second since he makes the most consistent impact while Kofi has the higher ceiling.

Most Improved Player contenders: Jessie Mifsud, Chris Jenco

Favorite: Short list here because most of you are remarkably consistent season to season. I’m going to go with Jessie, but its close. Jessie went from being kind of an afterthought last season to a legit scorer whos capable of getting 30 when Hof is not gobbling up all the shots. Shout out to Jenco who has vastly improved his efficiency this season.

GMoY Contenders: Roberts, Lyon

Favorite: Its Roberts but the winner of the 1 seed gets it in the end. Roberts swiping Ganley for super cheap to finish off his team might be the steal of the draft.

All Adraft First Team

G1 – Ryan Hof - 37/6/2 36% from 3

G2 – Pat Kelley – 21/5/4 35% from 3

F1 – Marc Gasser Wingate - 19.5/10/4.5 37% from 3

F3 – Chris Kerr – 17/8/1 43% from 3

F4 – Lyon Van Voorhis – 17/10/2

Notes: Balancing stats with team performance is always hard. If the Corp were in the playoff hunt, me and Kevins monster statistical seasons would be garnering award recognition. then again, if we were in the playoff hunt we might not have to average 50 points per game between us because we'd have some more help. Its a give and take.

Snubs: Kevin Clarke 18/14/3, Jeff Yeakley – 25/6/1 40% from 3, Kevin Swecker – 12.5/7/6 7% from 3 LOLOLOL,

The sneakers were amazing. When I get my first paycheck I’m buying them. Swecker is BBQ chicken. not a good defender. Just throws his belly into you.
