Week 3, and we’re starting to sort things out. We might finally have a clear picture of each team after this week if Billy can get his entire team to show up.

6:45 - Redeem Team  (1-0) vs.The Bread Getters (2-0):

Game of the night! Two teams who feel great about their seasons after the opening two weeks. Oddly enough, both are coming off wins over The Old and Nutes-less. Redeem Team eeked out a close one week 1, while The Bread Getters comfortably dismissed Keith & co. last week. Is now a good time to mention I ranked Redeem Team #1 in this weeks power rankings?

giphy.gifImage Enlarger

Bread Getters will match the height of Redeem Team relatively well, but I don’t think Lyon and Jeff will be all that interested in trying to pound the rock inside. Jibrail should cause issues though, hopefully they can generate open jumpers off his penetration. On the flip side, I wasn’t super impressed with RT’s defense week 1, but they do match up nicely with BG, who can’t bully their way inside easily. I’ll give a slight edge to BG because of their two game track record, but should be a good one!

Line: Bread Getters -2.5

Over/Under: 125.5

7:35 PM - A47 (1-1) vs.The Corporation (0-1)

Mazz did all he could last week and Corp still struggled to stay within shooting range. Meanwhile, A47 won in a shorthanded duel with Penetrators.  Should be a good game if Rosiello shows up, rumor has it Mazz promised him at least 4 of his 17 3 point attempts this week. Otherwise, A47 leverages our above average guard defense to limit Mazz’s damage, and force the role guys to shoot. Except Sydorko! I learned my lesson two seasons ago.

A47 got a lot of open looks last week, will Corp be up to the task defensively? I don’t think so.

Line: A47 -5.5

Over/Under: 131.5

8:25 PM - The Penetrators (0-2)  vs.Dropped Balls (2-0)

Showdown with the two best players in the league! Are the Penetrators finally ready to reveal the full roster? I sure hope so, because it’s been a tough watch outside of Phil. A one-man show on offense and undersized on defense, they’ve struggled to string together sections of good basketball on both ends of the court. Dropped Balls has shown no such issues winning their first two games. And we still haven’t seen a game where both Pollock and Pendergast looked dangerous.

Line: Dropped Balls -6.5

Over/Under: 157.5

If Mazz can put up 45 against me I'm scared to think what Phil is gonna do. I think I'll stick to guarding Billy this game

Redeem Team technically win, but really everyone lost

Do you fall asleep to the sound of basketballs loudly clanking off the rim? Do you miss 90’s basketball, when Chuck Person was considered a premier 3 point threat? Do you think Antoine Walker played the game the right way? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we had the game for you Tuesday night!

Despots got Redeem Team off on the right foot, scoring with two quick baskets, including a nifty righty drive, to open up a 4-0 lead. He was rewarded for his efforts with a quick hook as Coy had finally gotten his shoes on. RT would not score for another 7 minutes. They didn’t have much to worry about though, because BG were bricking everything in sight. Kerr and LeBlanc both had several good looks only to come up empty. Kerr finally got the Bread Getters on the board at 16 minutes with a nice mid-range jumper and followed it up with a 3 to take the lead 5-4. At this point, I thought we might be out of the woods, as BG had a bit more pep in their step. Swecker had a few nice righty drives against Gill, and Bread Getters inched ahead.

RT continued to look lost on offense. At times too unselfish, the ball whipped around the perimeter, but they weren’t really going anywhere. Roberts added a couple blocks on defense to keep the shutout going, but Jeff was only going to put up with the BS for so long. After a slow start he nailed a triple and followed it up with a nice post move. For the next five minutes, he was Redeems only offense, ripping off 12 straight to reel in an ice cold BG. Lyon finally got his first bucket with 2 minutes left, and RT went into the break up 2, 24 - 22. One could only hope things would improve.

Alas, they did not. The second opened much like the first. RT’s offense looked better (and BG was starting to tire), but they just could not knock anything down. Coy was now 0-5 from 3 and recorded his first bucket with 15 minutes left. With ten minutes left, Redeem Team held an impossibly large 4 point lead, 34 - 30. The skeleton crew from Bread Getters kept slowing down though, as Lyon cleaned up on a put back, Gill started to rack up offensive rebounds, and Johnson knocked down an open 3. Coy, committing himself to the defensive end, had an absolutely massive block on a Kerr floater as things slipped away from BG. Coy knocked down his 1st 3 down on his 10th attempt to effectively put this one away, 43-34 with 4 minutes left. Sweck knocked down a 3 to momentarily make things interesting, but a few free throws and a Jeff dunk later this one was mercifully over.

Think the struggles here (6-42 from 3 combined) can be chalked up to Redeem Team playing excellent defense, missing open shots, and BG being exhausted in the second half. RT defensive rotations were on point.

Grades:

Lyon - C: Was encouraged to post up and looked positively lost on the block. First points didn’t arrive until 2 minutes left in the first half, and his 3 point shot was not falling. Defense was fine but not up to his usual standards. They need to find a way to unlock Lyon a bit more in transition for this team to really get rolling.

Johnson - A-: Carried Redeem Team to this victory. Struggled from the FT and not his best from 3, but was their only consistent option and got it done. Played excellent defense too, communicates extremely well.

Coy - B-: He messed up his ankle before the game, I have to cut him some slack. But he also opened 0-9 from 3. He gets bumped from a C+ grade for his defense, especially his monster block on a Kerr floater down the stretch. His nice fast break assists and his FT violation on Gill’s and 1 offset.

Despots - B+: Great start to the game, scored the first two buckets, and had some nice cuts. Great defender to bring in off the bench, really solidifies their rotation.

Gill - B+: Like everyone else in this game, struggled with finishing, but was an absolute monster on the offensive glass. Kept play alive, tapped loose balls free, did all the little things. Struggled with Sweck more than he did last season, but still a decent job.

Bread Getters:

Swecker - B+: His best outing against Gill in what is always a testy match-up. Grabbed a number of offensive boards, only reason they were in it down the strech.

Kerr - B: Justified or not, he did get in early foul trouble again. Played well inside, but the 3 is just not falling right now.

Roberts - B: 4 blocks for the big guy! Needed more out of him on offense though with only 4 guys. I know he doesn’t have great match-ups against RT, but think they could have given him a few more post ups just to give Sweck and Kerr a break.

LeBlanc - C-:  0 points and 0 of 4 from 3 is just a brutal game for him, especially when they only had 4 guys. Had a couple nice assists, so I’ll spare him the D grade, but he needs to be better for this team to win.

Jibrail's block on Kerr was the most athletic thing I've ever seen in a CAC draft league

I was a late mid-week addition to the roster. My count had me with 30 points and 6/6 from three though.

Corp 70 - A47 65

Ah, the difference a week can make.  After last Tuesday, when A47 dominated the Penetrators en route to a 80-67 win, observers were questioning if the defending champions had been roundly underestimated.  They had barely lost to Pollock’s consensus #1 Ball Droppers in their first game, and following the shellacking against Billy’s team, they were flying high, likely licking their lips at the prospect of facing Mazz’s last ranked Corporation.  Mazz and the Corp, finally at full strength with Rosiello in the building, had other ideas.

After an atrocious offensive performance by both of the teams playing in the 6:45 game, this one started off rather ugly as well, with both teams struggling with their shooting to start.  After last week’s explosion, Mazz looked merely mortal again, struggling to find the range on his jumper to start. For most of the first half, the margin was fewer than 5 points, and the teams entered halftime knotted at 32-32.  Mazz had gotten a little hotter and finished the half with 3 threes and 13 points while Pat Kelley led A47 with 11 points, though it came on some inefficient shooting from the captain.

The second half started with more of the same, with the teams exchanging buckets, leaving the teams tied at 47 with 11 minutes to go after Mazz hit a pair of free throws.  Soon after, he subbed himself out of the game to get a quick breather, leaving the offense to Rosiello, who had looked sharp in his Corp debut.

This seemed like a great opportunity for A47 to make a run, with the other team’s primary scorer on the bench, but instead it was the Corporation who kicked things into gear.  Keyed by Ganley, who had grabbed a number of boards and had two nice finishes, Mulholland, and Rosiello, the Corporation ran off a 12-4 run over the course of 9 minutes, taking the lead to 59-51.  Mazz’s largest contribution during that stretch was a loud critique of Rosiello’s shot selection (that was a fine look, Eric).

Once Mazz checked back in, JMul extended the lead to 10 points (61-51) on a soft turnaround in the post, and A47 looked dead to rights.  A quick Cox three followed by a pair of free throws brought it back too within five at 61-56 with just under a minute to go. A47 was actually able to bring things within 3 at one point down the stretch, but they lost the free-throw game down the end, with Mazz bringing his team home from the line (he had struggled earlier in the game, but shot well from the stripe in the clutch), vaulting over A47 in the standings with a 70-65 victory.

Grades:

Corp

Mazz...A-...Another great game for the CEO, did a good job scoring inside on a day when his shooting from three merely was merely good, not unstoppable.

Rosiello...A-...Showed why Mazz was so concerned about his absence last week, hitting some big threes and giving them another scorer who initiated things when Mazz was on the bench.

Mulholland...B+...Better showing for Jmul than last week, stroked a three early and had some nice finishes inside.

Ganley...A-...Ganley is looking like a nice bench player, playing with a lot of energy, and confident enough to go hard to the basket if need be.

Dunton...B...Pretty quiet night for Sam, had some tough rebounds and one slick finish.

Sydorko...B-...The first two games for Mike have been kind of underwhelming as he’s failed to contribute much on the offensive end, excited to see how his role evolves. Solid defense as always though (one of my favorite moments on the night was when Syd blocked a shot, started to scream “get that shit outta h--” before realizing the ball was still in play and pouncing on it).

A47

Kelley...C+...Tough night for the captain, struggled mightily with his long ball (2/11 from 3), and wasn’t able to create that much for his teammates.

Clarke...B...After a stellar game last week, KC came back to earth a bit.  He was unable to really get his jumper going and missed a couple inside that are usually money.  Had some sweet passes.

Sergei...B-...After missing last week, it’s clear that Sergei and the rest of the team are still figuring out what his role should be.  Made some good hustle plays inside, but the ball had a tendency to stick with him and he took a couple ill-advised threes.

Kap...B...Without a challenge to his superiority over Billy, Kap was definitely less of a factor in this game.  Had some good plays on drives, but looked less assertive than last week.

Cox...A-...Cox has been really solid in the last two games and today was no exception.  Stuffed the stat sheet with 15-2-2 and two steals.

Ball Droppers 69 - Penetrators 63

This was the game of the night, and after two relatively slow offensive performances to start the evening, this game brought the evening to an exciting close.  After missing the first two games of the season (and his absences look like they will continue to be a part of this season’s narrative), MGW wasted little time getting things going, scoring the first two baskets of the game with decisive moves off the catch.  His positive contributions helped make up for a cool start from Phil, who missed six of his first eight triples.

On the other side, Pendergast came out in this one hot, scoring nine early on. Medeiros was his typical self, dropping a couple threes early on, and continuing to flash the passing and court awareness that should be scaring the rest of the league right now.  The game was pretty close for most of the first half, as Phil finally started cooking, and the Pens inched their way to a 37-33 halftime lead.

Just as he started the first half, Marc came out in the second like a man possessed.  In the first 4 minutes of the second half, he hit a turnaround from the block, a triple from the top of the key, and a fast break layup, sparking an 11-0 run out of the break, putting the Penetrators up by what seemed like a commanding 15 point margin (48-33), especially after how tight the first half had been.

Medeiros and Pollock finally put an end to the bleeding, but the Penetrators would not relent, pushing the lead back to 15 points as they took a 55-40 lead with just over ten minutes remaining.  At this point, Billy’s crew had to be feeling good. Pendergast had cooled after a hot start, Hunter was struggling after a fantastic game last week, and while he had scored a couple baskets, captain Pollock was also struggling to make an impact.

Yet just as the #1 ranked Ball Droppers appeared to be down for the count, things started to turn around.  Keyed by Pollock and Medeiros, they finished the game on a 29-8 run, tying the game at 60 with four minutes to go and then stretching that lead out as the game turned into a free throw contest late.  Phil turned things on late, hitting a couple of difficult threes to give the Penetrators a fighting chance, but it was too little too late, with the BDs triumphing 69-63.

After finally having the whole squad together, Billy’s boys went cold at the worst possible time, squandered a 15 point second half lead, and now are looking up at a major hill to climb if they are to make the playoffs, a challenge that will be compounded by MGW’s further expected absences.  On the other hand, Medeiros and Pollock continue to show why they are an early title favorite.

Grades:

Ball Droppers

Medeiros...A...MM got his, but was also excellent moving the ball and continues to show an encouraging amount of trust in his teammates.  Was both a stabilizing presence and a spark plug during the second-half surge that brought them back into the game.

Hunter...B-...After the first two games of this season, Hunter’s going to be held to a higher standard than he was last session, and he didn’t quite have it going on Tuesday.  He struggled to handle a number of passes and missed a couple bunnies. Had an awesome block though.

Pollock...A-...Sam’s making this captain thing look easy.  He’s found a good rhythm playing off of Medeiros, and added three big steals, two of which led directly to points for his team.

Pendergast...A-...Tuesday was David’s best game of the season so far, causing problems for the Penetrators with his slicing drives to the rim, and his killer floater.  Showed good vision as well (4 assists).

Fennelly...B...Another perfectly solid outing for Colin.  Didn’t make a big impact on the stat sheet but was able to contribute decent minutes to the win.

Penetrators

Phil...B...Feels a bit weird giving a B to someone who dropped 34 points, but the standard he’s set so far this season is extremely high and he fell short of that this week.  His jumper wasn’t quite as dialed in as it’s been this season (6-19 from three), and I’d still love to see him playing in more two-man actions, especially if MGW is playing.

Billy...B...Tough outing in the scoring department for Billy (1 point), but he was distributing the ball well (5 assists) and was a quality presence on the defensive boards.

MGW...A-...After missing two weeks, Marc came out with a fury and delivered a really solid performance, scoring on threes from up top, turnarounds in the post, and runouts.  As mentioned above, they need to unlock more two-man actions with him and Phil.

Robinson...B-...Brob has struggled to figure out his role in this offense through two games, mostly floating around the perimeter, and he went scoreless tonight.  Despite that, he threw a couple brilliant passes and was solid on defense.

Packard...B-...Kind of a no-show performance for Packard.  Not sure if it was an intentional rotation or not, but did not seem to be on the court all that much and didn’t make much of a splash when he was, passing up a couple open looks and only managing 4 points and one rebound.

Marcel...C...Marcel’s had a tough last two games after an awesome opener.  Hunter is certainly a serious deterrent inside, but Marcel had a lot of trouble finishing inside on a number of occasions.
