Week 9 is here boys and now that every team has played each other once, every game from now on will be the second match-up between respective teams. We are in full fledged RIVALRY SEASON BABY! That means one more week until the playoffs and award season. The MVP waters are starting to look murky, it really could be anyone’s award at this point. The same can be said of the Rookie of the Year, which might be the hottest race it’s been in years! Show me something boys, time’s running out for you to impress me. TO THE LINES!

Taha and the sexy bunch vs. Run N’ Gun 6pm Game:

Back when these two team last met, I was hoping TATSB’s veteran wisdom would help turn this team into a contender, but that hasn’t happened. I also thought the Ari’s might have an impact for Run N’ Gun, but instead it’s been Vladi’s veteran wisdom that was helped guide Run N’ Gun to the top of the standings as the clear best team in the league through 7 weeks. So, what can TATSB do to grab a win in this game?

Get creative boys, get creative. I mentioned in the beginning of the season that TATSB was short on wings and that ugly flaw has been shown in their defensive performances. They just don’t have a good defense, because they don’t have enough guys who can match up with other’s teams wings and guards. Run N’ Gun has the Harding-Vladi-Devine trio and they’re going to give TATSB trouble in this game, plus MacDonald and Johnson, who put up his best game of the season the last time these guys played.

Now, does TATSB have an edge in the post for this game? They sure do, but it’s very much debatable if they’ll be able to use it. They aren’t the kind of team that has someone to slow down the pace and feed the post. Not to mention their post players haven’t been great at converting when they’ve been in the post to begin with. So, in theory they could slow it down and pound Run N’ Gun inside, but can they be efficient enough doing that.

The last time these two teams played, Run N’ Gun smoked TATSB. Vladi, only scored 9 points, on 1 for 7 from 3, which I’d say is bad sign for TATSB, to lose a game when that happens. I assume, Lerner will play a lot better, but I don’t have much faith the rest of the team can score or defend well enough to make Run N’ Gun fear a loss.

Run N’ Gun -13.5 over Taha and the sexy bunch

Luca Conconi All-Stars vs Block Party 7pm Game:

This game should be all kinds of fun, as two teams, with two contrasting styles meet in the 7p slot. Both of these teams are coming off nice wins, with Block Party’s being the bigger statement win, after spending weeks looking pretty mediocre. LC has been up and down all season, trading nice wins with even worse losses.

Like I mentioned these two teams have very contrasting styles. LC wants to push the pace, get out in transition and shoot 3s. Block Party, wants to slow the pace and feed the post. The last time these two teams faced each other, Motha ate in the post off the bench. LC, doesn’t have the girth down low to stop him and Robel at the same time. Robel, will most definitely be guarded by Dwyer, who rebounds very well, but might struggle with Robel’s size. I expect Block Party, to do a lot of post feeding to their bigs.

The last time these two teams met LC, struggled with their zone offense. A lot of that was simply due to them not making a lot of shots, they missed a bunch of 3s and then couldn’t convert around Robel inside. Block Party’s zone was an obvious weakness, but most teams aren’t able to exploit that and I’m not sure LC is up for that challenge either. I suspect this game will come down to LC making enough 3s to either get Block Party out of the zone or spread them out further then they want to be.

With both teams at 4-3, this game has all kinds of playoff implications. Whoever wins, should be able to secure at least the 3rd seed, though I don’t think any team is on board with the idea of facing Fay in round 1. Block Party, definitely has the edge in this game, unless King can break out of his season long 3-point slump. They need his 3s and they need Clasby to have a big game, he doesn’t seem to want to have either. Too many guys on LC are trick or treaters and they’ve been mostly tricking all season.

Block Party -4.5 over Luca Conconi All-Stars

Delta Variants vs Glynn Reapers 9pm Game:

This should be an interesting game of contrasting styles. One team can’t score and the other team can’t stop anyone. The Delta Variants are stuck in 4-4 tie breaker hell and the Reapers are destined to face the 2nd seed.

The Reapers, have looked a little better in recent weeks, which is to say they’ve stopped getting their shit pushed in every week. They still have a real problem scoring the ball, being the only team in the league under 50 points per game. They just aren’t getting enough from their guys every week. Pollock, is probably, actually most definitely his worse season in the CAC or at least a Draft League. The scoring or assists aren’t there and no one else is stepping up to help. Alex, has been better in recent weeks, but everyone else is big time trick or treat. This would be a good game for everyone to feel better about themselves.

DV, picked up a huge win last week, in an attempt to move up in the standings. Their superstar posted a triple-double, but their defense continues to look shaky. They just don’t have the guys to guard most teams, especially if they have tall wings or guards. Fay, can only guard one person at a time and everyone else is under the “we’ll try hard for you, but that’s all we can offer” category. Teams have been able to exploit mismatches on them, which is why they’re responsible for giving up two different 90 point games.

I don’t know who’s going to guard Fay, I assume Cavano or Pollock. Fay, can score on both, so I’d say Ian wouldn’t want to tire Pollock out on defense. The question is can the Reapers score enough points? They have what appear to be some mismatches, but I’m not sure they can exploit them. DV, will get their shots up, so I’m going to side with offense here.

Delta Variants -4.5 over Glynn Reapers

To finish off the regular season in the prime-time slot we have a big battle for seeding between 4-4 Get that Swag and 5-3 Amir Coincidence. These two teams played back in week two with Amir Coincidence winning a close one 56-51. Amir Coincidence is coming off a much-needed victory, while missing Casey, last week, while Get that Swag is on a two game losing streak.

If Amir Coincidence Is fully staffed, I like this matchup for them a lot. They have Ini and Joel to throw at Eusden and on the flip side Get that Swag doesn’t have anyone who can stop Casey. In the first game Casey had 15/11/5 and he should be able to do even more this second time around. Weinstein also has gotten much more comfortable as the season has went on and should be able to better his nine-point performance from the first matchup. Beyond those two scorers, Liam, Ini and Joel have all had 15+ point games this year and thus scoring should not be an issue against Get that Swag who are right in the middle of the pack defensively. For Amir Coincidence, the key will be shutting down Eusden. He’s the key to the Swag offense. Ficker and Lagno are solid secondary scorers, but beyond those three there is nobody who scares you offensively. I suspect Harry will have sort of defense to allow his other two defenders to help out and slow down their key three.

For Get that Swag, this is a big game for them to prove that their early season success wasn’t smoke and mirrors. They were a bottom half team pre-season, who got off to a good start, but if you look deeper, there are a lot of red flags. They are by far the worst three-point shooting team in the league on high volume and are also near the bottom of assists. Their three top players all average 15+ per game, but after that, they don’t have a single player averaging more than 5 points per game. That’s not going to cut it especially against a team as deep as Amir Coincidence. Someone from that group of Gordon, Joe, Trippe will have to step up for them to be able to keep up this week. Defensively, I do like some of their matchups, but wonder if they will just settle into a zone ultimately. Eusden could guard Joel and Ficker could take Casey, but they don’t have another big to battle down low with Ini and keep him off the glass. For Get that Swag to win this game they need their 4-8 guys to at least keep it respectable against the same players from Amir Coincidence.

This is an important game for seeding purposes with both teams in the running for the 2-6 seeds. Get that Swag needs a win to avoid heading into the playoffs on a three-game losing streak, while Amir Coincidence will want to show they still are a top three team in the league. In the end, I think Amir Coincidence’s depth wins out.

Amir Coincidence -6.5 over Get that Swag

All I know is Block Party is the #2 seed since they beat Amir coincidence, which means they face G. Reapers tomorrow.

I know this is a tad picky, but could I get my last game free throw stat adjusted to 3 for 4 because I know for fact I only went to line twice last game. It would be a great boost in my life long pursuit of reaching a career 50% FT percentage. Also great win for DV!!!

Yeah, these really should have gone out already. I’m not even sure seeding, let alone when we’re playing.

How are we supposed to have our film review session when we don’t know the opponent??

Sorry for the late write-up fellas

7:00pm – Run  n’ Gun vs. Taha & the Sexy Bunch

In the 7pm slot we had Run n’ Gun matched up with Taha and the Sexy Bunch, with Run n’ Gun being heavy favorites at -13.5. In the CAC anything can happen, so my money was on the Sexy Bunch to cover. To the action.

The Sexy Bunch came out blazing in this one thanks to Ghost’s patented mid-range buckets. He would hit two on the Sexy Bunch’s first two possessions, and then got a third following a Harding 3-ball. Quick 6-3 start for Taha’s squad. Paul and Chas would each add a layup of their own and we were looking at a 10-3 lead for the underdogs.

Ben would get going for RnG, kicking off an 8-2 run of their own, highlighted by a wild spinning hook by Matt, and capped-off by another Ben bucket off the nice pass from Kevin. Paul would end the run, getting a layup on a strong drive to the hoop, and we’d begin trading baskets for a while.

Kevin would hit another mid-range J, Chas hit Ghost with another dime to pull ahead to 16-13, but Ben would match his dime with a sweet look to Kevin under the hoop to bring it back to 1. With 9 minutes to go in the first, Ben gets fouled and hits both his FTs to give RnG their first lead of the game.

We had no scoring for the next minute and a half, but then… MALICE IN THE PALACE. Ben grabs a steal and somewhere in the action Healy absolutely destroys his finger. He grabbed his hand grimacing and walked towards the score table. I figured he just jammed it or fractured it or something, because he really didn’t flinch. He walks past and I just hear him muttering “Ooo that’s a bad break. That’s a bad break.” Then I saw the blood. Ladies and gentlemen, this guy is tough as nails. I saw the picture of his finger after and SHEEEEEESH. Hope that heals up soon. I heard that there has been a 2-game suspension handed to Ben via Tibbs.

Chas was the one who ran Healy to the hospital, so it’s very important to note that the Sexy Bunch could only field 4 players from this point on.

Through the next couple minutes my notes got hazy, but the Sexy Bunch stood strong. Kevin was quietly having himself a game, getting mid-range after mid-range jumper to fall. Kid loves the free-throw line area and didn’t attempt one three all game. He’s like the CAC’s DeMar DeRozen. Paul had a savvy scoop & score where he used KD as a moving screen to get an uncontested lane to the rim. Was it intentional? We’ll never know, but it sure as hell was effective. Kevin would hit a nice fader to close the half, but the Sexy Bunch was hanging in strong, down 35-32 to the heavily-favorited Run n’ Gun.

The second half would start off a little sloppier, with missed threes happening on both ends until Brian would start things off with an o-board put back. Kevin would continue his mid-range assault, adding 5 more jumpers to his total in the second half.

With 16 to go, the Sexy Bunch were down 10, and Taha has seen enough. He led on a quick 6-0 run on his own getting a nice dime followed by a bucket of his own, and we’re at 44-48 Run n’ Gun with 14:30 to play!

That’s the last life we’d see from Taha’s Sexy Bunch. Matt and Harding both had quiet-ish first halves, and the shooting was rough, combining for 1-for-10 downtown. Something switched with about 12 minutes to go in the game, and they took the roof off. Matt would drop 3 bombs in a row, all from Ben/Harding assists and Run n’ Gun was up 17 before I even realized that this was no longer a close game. Ghost hit a couple more jumpers, but they were trading 2s for 3s at this point and the Sexy Bunch just had no answer for the assault from downtown.

Harding figured he’d get in on the action himself, and started stroking threes, ending the second half 3-for 4.

With 4:30 left, Dawud would add to the gap with a nice scoop & score of his own. I have a note here saying Taha comes alive late, but I really wasn’t keeping tight notes after the lead hi 20+, so sorry if you had some highlight moments there, Taha.

KD called the game with 2:24 to play, with a final score of 87-63, Run n’ Gun.

PLAYER GRADES:

Run n’ Gun

Matt (B+): Matt had a pretty poor first half, shooting 0-for-4 from deep, and only adding one bucket and one D-board to that line. However, he helped break the game wide open in the second with 3 after 3, including one absolute bomb from 5 feet behind the line. When this guy’s on, he’s on.

Kevin (A, MVP): I haven’t seen Kevin play much, so I’m not sure if this is his norm, but holy hell this guy can play. Absolutely stuffed the stat line and couldn’t miss from mid-range. MVP of the game.

Harding (B): Only gets docked for the poor 3pt shooting in the 1st half and lack of a first half assist. He’s the best player on this team so I’m holding him to a slightly higher standard. Overall though, a great Harding game, particularly in the second half.

Dawud (B+): Got himself involved and made his minutes count. Assist, o-board, scoop & score—can’t ask for more from your 6th man.

McDonald (A-): I hate scoring McDonald’s games because my hand hurts from tallying all the stats. Really great game from him, with 3 steals to boot.

Taha & the Sexy Bunch (not graded on a curve for being 4-on-5 in the second half)

Civale (B-): Civale is capable of so much more. If it wasn’t for the bad 3pt shooting in this one, I’d give him a better grade, but someone on this team needed to step-up and hit a bunch of 3s to combat that barrage in the second half. Great rebounding, blocks, and big-man assists though.

Chas (DNF): A+ teammate award for driving Healy to the hospital. Had 3 nice assists before he had to take off for the ultimate assist.

Ghost (A): Ghost played his ass off, finding his spots and getting bucket after bucket, good rebounding output, and a few assists as well. Great Ghost game.

Paul (B-): Putting Paul in the same bucket as Civale on this one. He played a really good game, but the 3pt shooting needed to some from somewhere and he also couldn’t provide there. Did a little bit of everything else, though, and was valuable to his team out there.

Taha (A-): Taha had WAY more points than I remember. Some of those may have come in garbage time, but he ended the game with a nice point total, and his 5 assists were second only to Ben’s 6.

Healy (DNF): Hope that finger heals soon my man!

Okay huge mistake on my part here: he was actually 0-for-6 from three–not sure what I was looking at when I wrote this. This breaking news puts his status of MVP of the game in jeopardy, along with my non-stop praise throughout the write-up.

Nice write up Joel—you say you were “late” with the writeup but it’s the only one I see posted!

Confirmed, Kevin can fkn play. We get this kind of game from him every week.

**we played 4 v 4 against TATSB after Healy got hurt, we’re not monsters!
