I had nothing better to do on a Monday night, so I figured id stick around and get a feel for what the league had to offer this season. I paid particularly close attention to the 8pm game between Over the Hills and Far Away and Talk Shit Get Hit since those looked like the two teams mostly likely to mount a significant challenge against my throne. I ignored the 845pm game because let’s face it – a team that picks Alan at 25 isn’t going anywhere nor is Nates team of out of shape has beens. I’ll steal the Zach Lowe format of like/don’t like.

  1. Thing I like: Cory Gans sweet stroke and his teammates screens

Man there’s just something so satisfying about watching a great shooter. Gans caught fire at one point and made 4 consecutive 3s coming off screens near the top of the key. I don’t even think he hit rim, just pure. Chas was losing his mind behind the scorers table and at one point I considered pulling the fire alarm so that someone would come and hose him down. I loved the action Corys team was running to try and get him open shots, sometimes setting multiple off ball screens on one play. I play on a few 5v5 teams that could learn a thing or two about setting off ball screens, so its surprising to see that kind of teamwork in an over 30 league, never mind week 1. They didn’t get the victory, but I liked what I saw out there.

  1. Thing I don’t like: The return of Lagno’s 3 point shot

Speaking of shooters, the best shooter in the 755 game wasn’t actually Cory Gans, but the resurgent Paul Lagno. The change of scenery from WSNS to MLK (a shooters gym if there every was one) looks to be huge for Paul. He’s also surrounded by some good players who will be able to create open looks for him, unlike last season where he and Gold kind of just took turns on offense and didn’t have much chemistry together. Paul being a guy that you absolutely can’t help off of really opens things up for Brett and hopefully Jmul (he sucked this week) and cements this team as a legit contender.

  1. Thing I don’t like: Harry starting himself (and playing most of the game)

Gans started the game on the bench and I heard chatter about him not feeling well but id say his stellar play spoke for itself. It should have led to a win but unfortunately Talk Shit get hit (lets see if he follows through) had to play most of the game with a human jersey barrier out there. Harry set some good screens and kept the ball moving but both of those things are the absolute bare minimum you should expect from a player. Other than that, he provides next to nothing of value towards winning. The man wont even use a couple of his 5 fouls, instead he just watches as the cars go by. He should bring a nice comfy chair next week and park himself on the bench where he belongs, occasionally stepping in to spell his guys.

  1. Thing I like: We got the best Mulholland brother

Its great to have CACs version of the O’Doyles all back in the same league again. I finally got a chance to thank them for letting my teammate Kap live in their garage for so long. Typically, the hierarchy has been Jmul, Smul, Buml for as long as I’ve been around. Maybe you pick Scott if you need defense and Jmul if you need offense. Well after week 1 I would say Scott looks like the alpha in the family. 11/10 + 4 blocks, plus some great screens and passing. He did exactly what we needed him to do. Brad also put up solid numbers in his teams loss, but I almost view that as a negative because if you are relying on Brad your team is fucked. Jmul on the other hand looked invisible out there. He made no impact whatsoever and if he didn’t show up at all I’m not sure the game goes any differently.

  1. Thing I don’t like: Cawley is in for another tough season

I’m sure Mike is happy to be out from under the crushing boot of Harry and no longer dealing with the random emotional outbursts of KD, but despite solid debut for rookie Nick Arria, I don’t think his team is very good. They desperately need a playmaker to jump start the offense and run pick and rolls with Mike. Maybe Arria can settle into that role but I saw him as much more of a head down/slasher who doesn’t necessarily have the bball IQ to make smart passes. Weinstein is ideally a catch and shoot player, not someone you want handling the ball, while Randall/Pizza/Daley are replacement level bench guys. Being the #1 overall pick is an honor, but it often means you are doomed to have to carry the load yourself and Mikes just doesn’t have that type of mentality.

  1. Thing I like: The short hoop on the far side of the court

The MLK small gym is kind of a like a wacky level of Mario Kart – the thin out of bounds lines in the corner, walls inches from the out of bounds line, random children’s backpacks strewn about. But the number one zany game changing aspect of the court is that the back hoop is just shorter than the front one. Its so fucking easy to shoot 3s on that side and I make a point to increase my already ridiculously high volume when we’re shooting on that side. The downside is that layup’s from the right side always seem to be harder and I see people missing them in confusing ways. As the best shooter I see this as a positive

  1. Thing I don’t like: Casey Tenney’s defense

For the second straight season Gordon Sheffield had the 2nd overall pick and declined to pick me. Do I take that personally? Absolutely. Now I know that I’m not Marcus Smart out there on defense but at least I actually give a shit and can hold my own in most 1v1 matchups. Casey on the other hand simply does not try on defense. To the point where if Kap didn’t sub me out I think I could have got 60. To be fair I always think that, but Casey defense is pathetic. I refuse to believe he’s actually this bad, given that he’s clearly a skilled player on the other end, so my conclusion is that he just doesn’t try which in my mind is way worse. It’s a joke that he got drafted ahead of me.

  1. Thing I like: Golden Oldies running PNR for Gold

If something keeps working over and over again why stop? Golden Oldies know exactly who their best player is and its Josh Gold. Last season Gold was on a team that took 8 weeks to realize he was their best player and by then it was too late. He was out there playing a lot of 1v1 basketball and while he’s good enough to make that work, its way better to have a team that’s supporting you and putting you in a  position to succeed. Chas drafted well around Gold and he has multiple Pick n roll partners who commit to a solid screen to free up space before diving to the hoop (Skelly, Kiely) or popping out for a 3 (Kodra). Properly executed pick n roll in 4v4 basketball is deadly especially when you have a triple threat (shoot, pass, drive) guard like Josh.

  1. Thing I don’t like: Chas celebrating a week 1 championship

After enduring a dreadful 0-10 season alongside Aidan O’Westbrook this winter, Chas was ecstatic to finally get a W on Monday. His post-game reaction was downright embarrassing. He was screaming and fist pumping like he won the fucking title. Randall took notice and told him to STFU and Im glad he did. Be better Chas. You drafted a really solid team this season, one that could even win in the playoffs. Try to act like you’ve been there before.

  1. Thing I like: GOAT shit looks like the overwhelming favorite

Sheffs team was missing Sheff (irrelevant) and Civale. Civale would have helped their offense, but he would have been mincemeat in switches, and they had no chance to guard us regardless. I actually like my team this season more than last seasons championship team. Having Scott in the middle really shuts down the easy buckets that teams were getting on us last season due to our lack of size.
He doesn’t stretch the floor for us as well as Bohnaker but I can’t make up the difference. Jet for Carlos is an upgrade IMO because Jet is a better passer, smarter player and makes just as many plays on defense even if hes a little less versatile there. Kaps not going to shoot 1/10 again, Amir is still sexy as hell, and Sammy D looks like a perfect fit. I can’t believe he fell that far in the draft!

First off this is incredible workkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is just absolutely amazing.

Have you not known me for 12 years +, have I ever reacted differently? If you did then I feel embarrassed for you,and your lack of historical sense, also I stopped being embarrassed about anything in the 3rd grade, I am very happy/confident in who I am. In all seriousness, though it really wasn’t the losing that got to me last session, it was the negativity that killed me so my reaction was mostly about just being happy to play the sport I love with joy again. If you got past the yelling /excitement my teammates will tell you the message was don’t get too high on this one, enjoy the win, and right back to work next week on a clean slate. Anyways 1-0 Lets gooooooooooooooooooooooooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha.

You have this weird obsession with me and my fouls. You do know I’ve broken up more fast breaks than anyone in the CAC with fouls, right? That’s why I’m the only one who has a foul named after them. Also, your defensive point makes no sense, since Lagno was the only who scored on me. You sure you watched this game?

I’m not in this league but Tibbs teased this on Twitter and caught me hook, line and sinker. I’m also waiting patiently (or not so patiently) to get back on the court so I couldn’t resist the urge to read and respond.

Thing I don’t like: The return of Lagno’s 3 point shot

Love to hear this bc Lagno’s going to get a lot of open looks on our team in this gym on Wednesday nights too.

Thing I don’t like: Harry starting himself (and playing most of the game)

It’s always fun when Harry has to eat a spoonful of his own medicine

Thing I like: The short hoop on the far side of the court

SO disappointed to hear this. All everyone kept doing was talking up this MLK gym to me and I was hoping that this session I’d finally get to play in a gym with baskets at 10 feet, consistent lighting, no ceiling obstructions, and no trolls growing under the floorboards. BUT maybe the inconsistencies is what CAC basketball is all about?

SHOTS FIRED!

The “short” hoop is short but it’s not egregious by any means.

My three point shot will be absent until playoffs…book it!

This is pretty clearly a 3 horse race in my eyes. If you don’t know who the 3 are then you aren’t part of that tier!

I prefer Heady and the more OG Tree house beers because i still want some level of bitterness and malt backbone in my IPAs. Super Treat is pure tropical hop sweetness and nothing else.

This is great content Mazz, but I’d like to acknowledge that the unprompted drive-by shooting of AO within the first 100 words of the piece was uncalled for. I expect a formal written apology from your PR team on the Commissioner’s desk by noon.

heady topper is beyond over-rated at this point, had one the other weekend and was blown away by how mediocre it is in comparison to other IPAs. just about every brewery in existence is capable of pushing out comparable stuff these days.

all for the weekly segment where mazz “interviews” a legend (captains only?)

This is the correct take – it was an OG and in the early 00’s when it came out it lapped the field. now? almost any and every local microbrew has a couple that are miles better
