SDL Week 1 Preview and Lines:

10:15- Frongi vs. Golden Geese (GG -1) : Until proven otherwise, Mazz has the edge in any matchup against a team led by me. However, I think this game will be tightly contested for a few reasons. Mazz should be a bit rusty fresh off his trip to Germany. During the W19 session of CAC, Mazz played 43 games launching what has to be a record 494 threes. There’s no doubt that playing 4 days a week puts you in a certain type of rhythm that gets lost after a couple of weeks drinking beer. Secondly, I think our bench has a strong advantage over the dynamic duo of Joey Stuto and Dylan. While Anthony is a complete unknown, Mazz knows first hand how effective Jared can be as a 5th man on a good team. I predict this game to come down to the wire.

11:05- Alan’s Super Squad vs. Royale With Cheese (ASS -6.5): After a session off, Burton and the boys get thrown right back into the fire with a week 1 matchup with Zak. My gut tells me week 1 Burton will not be quite up to the task. I am interested to see how Alan’s team matches up with our resident Tarantino fan boys. Does Zak take Burton while Sydorko hangs on the perimiter with Solis, or vice versa? Zak seems to feel awfully slighted by his number 3 selection, so I expect him to come out with something to prove.

11:55- Team Ball with my Bros vs. Mass Appeal (MA -4): The first and last team in my preseason power rankings. I’ve set the line at only 4 for a few reasons. Gianno’s team is built around rookies and guys who operate best with the ball in their hands. There is naturally going to be a learning curve to figuring out their optimal style of play. I also think TBWMB is going to play with a ton of energy and actually be a lot of fun to watch. This should keep them in games and hopefully prevent blowouts. My big question remains where does the offensive firepower come from? Maybe D.K. or Cahill are ready to step up and be a 20+ PPG scorer.

Great Stuff Dave! I do expect us to beat Mazz though. I think I have an over 0.500 record against him in SDL (small sample size alert).

I expect Alan to throw Costa and Sydorko on Burton and Solis and for Zak to guard Brewer or Comenitz and just hang in the paint until one of them hits some jumpers. I expect ASS to win.

Last game should be interesting. Beckett will probably be the Lax Bros leading scorer and they will play with a ton of intensity. They will thrive in the chaos this season – fast breaks, broken plays, long rebounds, random bounces that lend themselves to hustle plays. I do think they will struggle in the half court on both ends. Musse and Clemens are probably the best two guys in this game so I see them winning.

My takes STINK! Both the 5 and 6 teams in my power rankings started off the season with wins. Royale with Cheese secured a 9 point victory over Zak & Co who were missing Sydorko. Solis and Dunton combined for 43 and Sam certainly looks like a draft day steal. In the last game of the day, Team Ball with my Bros beat Mass Appeal by 2 on a PZA game winning bucket with about 5 seconds to go. MA was unable to get up a last second shot after TBWMB smartly gave a foul with 2 seconds left. TBWMB had a balanced attack led by 19 from Cahill and Sheehan filling the stat sheet with a 13/11/3/4/1 line. In the first game of the day my team hung on down the stretch to narrowly beat Mazz’s team.

Hopefully this isnt just Dave and I going back and forth all summer…

You could argue a close win over Mazz’s team without Seyi is a bad result for us, but I liked what I saw once we felt each other out in the first 5 to 10 minutes. Not making free throws and some crazy Mazz 3’s allowed them to come back. Mazz is the best player in the league so they’ll be fine too.

ASS gave up a ton of points without Sydorko, no surprise there. Still seems like a solid win for Royale with Cheese, Dunton was an obvious steal. Man those low SDL stats from a prior season feel way off. Zak needs to get back to the old Zak for this team to win a ship.

Surprised Clemens only had 20. If he ends up a 20 ppg guy this team is in trouble. Seems like a solid effort from the lax bros but I would not count on that kind of 3 point shooting often. That said, they will obviously be a pain in the ass to play against, such high energy.

I think all the teams are relatively even which should make for a great session! Week 2 should sort some things out, pending absences.

This is definitely going to be a competitive league. Teams are going to be able to match up well and change game plans accordingly. I’ll give my attempt at a preview/prediction for this week.

Mass Appeal V Alan’s Super Squad

After facing off against Alan’s Super Squad last week, I can tell you that they have some great weapons (aka Zac) and great ball movement/attacking the basket (aka zac and Alan). If they can get their shots to fall from beyond the arc from their other players then they should be a tough team to face. I didn’t get to watch Mass Appeal play, but based off the write up and stats, the gleaming dread is the two goose eggs produced by their team. It’s going to be tough to beat any team with only four players scoring (I only scored 5 pts so who am I to talk). This being the case, I would predict Alan’s Super Squad -4.

Royale With Chees V Loathsome Offensive Brutes

I’m excited for this match up. I see this is a true battle between two teams who are true team players. Unselfish, passing, and no one lone weapon on either team will cause this to be a close battle. The keys to the game for RWC will be to limit offensive rebounds and shut down our resident stat keeper. On the other end, LOB keys to the game include defending the paint and defending the fast break. I give a bias prediction of RWC -3 due to a Burton/Solis combo.

Team Ball With My Bros V Golden Geese

Golden Geese have Mazz. Ball With My Bros has balance and speed. This is a tough prediction since Mazz scorched 60+ against me a couple sessions ago, but looking at the team stats from last week, it’s tough to ignore the fact that this match up looks like a 2 V 5 game. The key to Golden Geese is to stop forcing passes and to try to create a more balanced offense so that TBWMB is forced to guard more than just two people. The key for Ball is to continue their success. Three players with 3 assists, almost five with double digit points! Due to these stats, Team Ball will out hustle Golden Geese -6.5.

Just predictions, no hard feelings.

The ref was chill. Didn’t call much but I don’t think I saw a single person fight with him ha.

Not gonna lie- Terrible outing for Mass Appeal but we know exactly what to do to succeed. We lost by 2 points and musse and I shot 1-12 from deep. Massive waste of possessions and that will not happen again.
