Week 1 is here fellas, which means we expect a lot of sloppy play and a bunch of overreactions to one game. I, for one, can’t wait! Mazz, will be covering my game, which means I’ll be judging all of you from the scorers table for the rest of the games tomorrow evening. If I can spare any time away from watching the Bucks vs Nets. I can only hope to get the kind of wireless connection that Tibbs does during his “score keeping” games. Also, I wrote a Power Rankings preview for the league, so check that out.

What to watch for: Week 1 Edition:

All the damn rookies of course! While, this plays like a regular B-Draft or THE Franchise League draft, there’s quite a number of new faces, so all those players will get my attention this week. That especially goes for the guys who were picked in the first half of the draft. Eusden, Wise, Joseney and Onwuka. Show me something out there and you may acquire a nick name. The kind that will stick with you for life.

Run ‘N Shoot vs. Del Boca Vista 6pm Game:

In pure Tibbs form, he put in the least amount of effort into making the week 1 schedule and therefore, we have the #1 and #2 picks meeting in week 1. Run ‘N Shoot led by Lerner and Del Boca Vista, which I believe is a re-used Frongi team name (shame on you sir), featuring Mazz. Those two will be the focal point of the game, but we do have some interesting match-ups with the “others” as Shaq likes to say.

I assume Lerner will get the Mazz assignment, but I wonder who from Run N’ Shoot will get the Lagno assignment. Lagno, is definitely capable of going off on guys who aren’t up for the challenge and I’m not sure who on Run N’ Shoot will be. Although, I must say, I’ve never seen Onwuka, so maybe he’s the answer there? Run N’ Shoot better hope he’s the answer on both ends, because in a game with Mazz, they’re going to need someone other than Lerner to score. Without knowing Onwuka, I have a lot of questions about these guys offense. Cavano is going to need to find his game for these guys, the shit show I’ve been seeing won’t cut it.

On the other side of the ball, I think fit is going to be an issue here, but probably not this week. Frongi’s squad as the answer for Lerner, with Mazz, in that he’ll just out score him (maybe). Mazz and Frongi have the chemistry already, plus I see Lagno getting buckets in this one. I don’t know about their rookies, but I’ll have a close eye on them, to assess this team’s future. Not to mention keeping an eye on Zukic, fresh off surgery.

I think this is, what we know, is what we’re going to get type of game. Lerner, is going to score a lot. Mazz, is going to score a lot. It’s going to come down the “others” and having watched too much of Cavano lately, the edge goes with Frongi’s team. Frongi and Lagno will get their team’s the extra buckets they need to pull away.

Del Boca Vista -5.5 over Run ‘N Shoot

We Fly High vs Get Rich, Die Trying 7pm:

Let me first say, I’m glad Mazz, chimed in with a negative comment about our team, because we were getting way too much hype. The draft went perfectly, but things can change quickly in this world, especially with all the new additions to each team.

Everyone knows by now what the guys on “We Fly High” are going to do, each and every game. They are going to be a real pain in the ass and relentlessly attack the boards. They are going to throw up a bunch of ugly bricks, then do it again and then they might score one, off the 5th O-board. The problem they face this week, is the problem every team is going to face each week. Who’s going to guard Pollock and Weinstein? MacDonald is going to have one, then who guards the other? The Jet is a main candidate, but the problem is both guys can shoot over him. If rookie Mike, is who I think he is, he isn’t a good match-up there. First time captain, Michael Etheridge, has a slight dilemma on his hands there. I’m also not sure, how they handle the constant running our team will do (As I watch from the other end). How will “We Fly High”, stop the fast breaking?

Offensively, things will be a little easier for Etheridge’s squad. They have a lot of guys who attack hard and get their team second chances. Etheridge, is a beast on the boards. Sydorko, more than holds his own down there and he’s a big body. The Jet and MacDonald are both good rebounders for guards. I see a lot of second chance opportunities for these guys. The question this week and every week, will be if they can convert enough of them. Also, someone on this team is going to have to make a three or 2. The Jet might as well be Reggie Miller from deep on this team and he’s going to have make a lot more than he’s use to for them to find any spacing. Sydorko is another capable shooter, along with sex machine AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMIR. The two X-factors might be their rookies, who I know nothing about.

We Fly High, is going to need to work on their chemistry. This team is probably going to need a couple weeks to figure out how to pigeon hole their guys in the right spots and away from what everyone else is trying to do. There’s a lot of similarities that will need work. That being said, this is week 1 and they’re playing the best team in the league.

Get Rich, Die Trying -8.5 over We Fly High

Sheffield vs Civale 8pm Game:

Firstly, get your team names in guys or I’m giving you one for next week. Sheffield’s team figures to be the oldest and wisest team in the league, with the biggest mystery going into week 1. Eusden was taken by Sheffield 5th, probably suggested to him by Tibbs, which should have been a major red flag to Sheff, but he took him anyways. I like Musse at point, Ghost and Shaffer are good secondary players, but how is the number 5 pick going to fit in. Then, Sheff took another rookie at 21, who apparently played D3. Lots of mystery with this team.

Civale’s team on the other hand, is no mystery at all to me, except for this Koloff kid. I have them number 2 in my rankings and I look for them to come out strong in week 1. I do expect Eusden (if he’s any good or even average), to eat at the Koller buffet, but I think Civale’s team is going to have an edge right off the bat. Their team fits together nicely, while I expect Sheff’s team to need a little bit to figure out that Civale can’t run with Ghost all game and Ghost should probably score 20 plus points. I’ll have my eyes on that match-up in the beginning.

It’s hard to figure out how Sheff’s team will match-up, but I expect Civale’s team to have the floor spread nicely for a Leblanc-Koller PnR. Leblanc, is a floor general and should be able to get his team open shots. Plus, Alex and Doherty are two good wings, who can get out on the break. Sheff’s team is old as I mentioned, so running on the break all game might be an issue. I can see Civale’s team getting easy buckets as the game goes on and I’m going to use that as my tipping point for this game. I think Civale’s team can get a lot more easy baskets than Sheff’s and they eventually pull away.

Civale -6 over Sheffield

Let’s Get Tropical vs. Kawhi’ So Serious? 9pm Game:

This game has the makings of a typical 9pm game, which a lot of big/wing/lanky type players and no guards in site. Not to mention my favorite player in the draft, the kid who make outside shots and lay-ups. I expect lots of terrible shots in this one, with multiple O-boards and ugly looking fouls. First time Captain Pranam, took every big man he knew, to make up for his lack of size. Djordje, went the same way, to make up for his non-lack of size. I’m just saying, the refs are going to love this game.

I’m concerned about how KSS, is going to score points against teams that can play defense or in this case, match their size all over the floor. I know Cawley, has retired from defense years ago, but where are KSS going to get points? They don’t have a lot of shooting, nor do they have anyone who can run the offense, unless that rookie really does play like Chris Paul. Wise, better have some ball handling in his resume for this team to succeed. Let’s Get Tropical has the defenders for everyone and I don’t really see any mismatches. Let’s hope Pranam, uses his big MIT brain to come up with some sexy offensive schemes.

On the other end of the floor, I see enough offensive talent to get buckets. Cawley, will get his points, even if he has Ben Simmons syndrome from 3. Dwyer, is a capable scorer as well and I remember Clasby, having no problems getting his shot up. This match-ups, really couldn’t be more perfect for these guys to begin the season. They face off against a team just like them, except they’re the better version. I’ll be interested to see what Filip and Maz bring to the table, since they can add another dimension to this team.

I just don’t see how KSS, is going to score. They are going to need a big effort from Wise, who I haven’t seen play. Maloof is going to actually have score on his O-boards, instead of racking them up. The secondary guys are going to have to hit their shots from deep here to keep the defense honest, but I don’t see it happening enough. Djordje’s crew will score enough.

Let’s Get Tropical -4 over Kawhi So Serious

Generally agree with the favorites. Team Civale will be missing a couple guys tonight, so we’ll see how that goes

Good content Harry, will be interesting to see how all the rookies look and how the teams fit together. Not to mention how everyone looks with half the league coming off a year plus break from hoops.

I think people are sleeping on the Lerner team! Should be a tough one for us against them tonight.

Night Recap:

Mazz and company took down the number 1 pick in a blowout victory. Mazz played his part, Lerner did not.

Rich and AAAAAAAAMIR dueled it out, but in the end, my team won by 11.

Sheff’s squad of old guys took down Civale’s team without their injured captain.

Pranam’s team minus their #1 pick got a double digit win over Djordje’s squad, missing their top 2 picks.

Stats out tomorrow, with write-ups. Get some shots up this week, so we get some points next week guys.

In the battle of the other guys, Pranam picks up first Captain win

I thought this game would be a slugfest of big guys coming in and that proved to be right, when all the first round picks in this game would be out for both teams. No Maloof, no Dwyer and Cawley. David Stern would have fined both teams for tanking the West Coast game of the week. There was a lot of rookies in this one to check out, so with that being said, TO THE ACTION!

Kawhi So Serious? came out of the gates hot, behind the most impressive rookie of the night, Jahred Newton, who I definitely never saw in the 5v5 League last season. He brings a much needed added dimension to this team, that I was worried about in the preview. He’s capable of handling point guard duties and feeding the bigs down low. He would have had a lot more assists, if McGirr could ever finish his first lay-up attempt. Speaking of McGirr, his Pre-Draft note was garbage, because he’s the same big bear he’s always been in these leagues. Not to mention his underhanded free throw style, that brings the kind of excitement that this league needs. KSS, got out to a big lead to start, behind the guys mentioned above and the hot shooting from deep, (Cantonni 3 for 4 from deep in the 1h, Abreu 1 for 1, Pranam 1 for 1 and Newton 1 for 1).

On the other end of the court, it was a massive struggle for Djordje and his team. Without Cawley and Dwyer there to reel in the troops, these guys were a giant mess out of the gates on both ends of the floor. Fillip, looked like a player to me, but he wasn’t very good in this one. He was often forcing his shot up and it wasn’t going down at all, especially from deep. I think he’ll have better days to come though. Rookie Manny wasn’t shy about getting his shot up either, going 3 for 5 from deep. He has all the makings of a microwave type player off the bench. Rookie Maz chipped in a bit as well, with 4 first half points, but threw up two air ball lay-ups in the half.

KSS carried a big lead into the half 41-27. The game was pretty damn sloppy with a bunch of steals (just bad passes to the wrong guys) and horrible shots. I think it was rookie Wise, who’s one shot from the paint, some how hit the top of the backboard. McGirr, in-between yelling about his team can shoot, threw some of the worse passes in basketball history. Would it get better in the second half? Spoiler alert…………no…….

Let’s Get Tropical started to play a little bit better as their guys started to reign themselves in a bit or more likely, just started to get tired. After being non-existent in the first half, Djordje, started playing a lot better. He got 5 O-Boards in the 2h, to go along with 5 2h points and a lot better energy from the captain. Fillip started to get some drives to fall and Clasby started to find his range a bit as well. However, they weren’t able to make much of a dent in the lead. Poor Dan Clasby found himself in the post with McGirr, which isn’t the right match-up for him, which led to the inevitable first missed lay-up, then another miss and finally McGirr hitting the third one.

Cantonni and Newton did a great job keeping of the ball moving for these guys. I liked the way both of them were able to keep their teammates involve, they’re going to have to do a lot of that this season. The rest of the team was kind of loose with the rock, leading to some bad turnovers, that kept the game around the 10-12 point mark. However, the game was never really in doubt. KSS picks up a nice first win, Let’s Get Tropical shall re-group for next week.

Grades

Dan Clasby B: This feels like a good Clasby game, he did disappear for stretches, but I think that had more to do with his teammates.

Djordje C+: Solid effort on the boards, but he needed to reel his guys in a lot earlier in the game.

Filip C: I think this kid is a player, but he didn’t play well tonight. Too much 1-on-1.

Manny R. B+: He had himself a good shooting night, the microwave was on.

Maz A. C: That lay-up display earlier on, burned a hole in my memory..

Ian C: Give me one made trey, also had a mental mistake on a backcourt pass.

KSS:

Pranam A+: First captain win! Congrats.

McGirr B+: The usual McGirr stuff, with the added addition of horrible passing that hurt his grade.

Cantonni B+: Made his shots, then made the right passes.

Newton A: I’m going to stick with a simple A here, I think he can do a tiny bit better. Overall though, very impressed by his play.

Wise B+: Despite that ridiculous shot on top of the backboard from 2 feet away, he played a very solid game. Definitely outplayed Djordje.

Jonathon B-: The rook played ok, I think he has more in him. I’d say he should post more, but there isn’t much room down there on this team for him.

Battle of top picks, goes to the number 2 pick

I thought this game would be exciting, since it featured the top two picks in the draft and it….kind of…..was? Both teams were well staffed, with only Frongi missing his rookie I believe. TO THE ACTION!

As I struggled to deal with this dollar store scoreboard, Mazz came out firing, scoring his team’s first few buckets. Run N’ Shoot would alternate guys on Mazz all game, doing a half decent job at keeping him in check. The three ball was working well for Del Boca Vista in the first, with Lagno, Frongi and Mazz combining to hit 7 treys (2 for Mazz, 2 for Frongi and 3 for Lagno). They had pretty good chemistry working between three, considering it was week 1 and Lagno may not be the best fit next to Mazz. However, they got the right match-up for week 1 and they were sharing the ball nicely.

On the other end of the floor, Lerner was on the struggle bus. Maybe he needs a new haircut or something, but his offense was way off. Del Boca Vista, was in a zone and even though it was a shitty one, Lerner couldn’t get anything going. His teammates weren’t exactly helping him out, but the struggler was certainly real. Brandon O. kept his teammate afloat early on with some nice shooting, hitting two treys and scoring 10 first half points. The back-ups then came in and gave these guys some energy. My former championship teammate Tom, was electric out there, moving the ball around and getting everyone involved. His bench mates also chipped in, Johnson and Conor scored 12 1h points combined. Neither of them were shy about getting their shot up.

Both teams were getting buckets in the first half here, with defense being optional. The kind of game Del Boca Vista has no problem playing in. They went into the half up 40-35. The main Trio of DBV doing the heavy work as the bench only chipped in one point, but the second half would change things up a little bit.

DBV started to push their lead wider as the second half began. The horrid shot selection of Run N’ Shoot, combined with the shitty play of Lerner, was started to rear its ugly head for these guys. Zone or no zone, you have to find a way to get your better players some looks. Brandon O. slowed down for these guys as well, with his shot not falling as much. Cavano had a big first half, but sputtered toward the second half, until he got hurt. Looks like these guys will need some time to get use to each other.

The story of the second half for DBV, was the work of their bench and secondary players. Muccio hit some big shots and was doing a good job of setting up his teammates to get buckets. Etienne also contributed with 6 points of his own this half and Butterworth was big on the board and had himself a nice assist. Very good effort from the secondary guys on this team. If they can bring it like that every night, this team will be tough to stop.

DBV would blow the game open as we progressed through the second half. Run N’ Shoot left all their timeouts on the table, to take home with them. I’d suggest someone take the reigns there, so they can try to stop one of the many runs DBV went on. Hopefully, Cavano isn’t hurt for the future. They are going to need him to step up. DBV 85-67 Final.

Grades

Lagno A-: Very good game for Paul, led his team in assist, had some nice defensive plays and shot it well.

Mazz B: This might be the second game I’ve seen Mazz play, so this feels like good, not great performance.

Frongi B+: Old school Frongi performance, leading his team in rebounds.

Zukic B-: Just getting back from injury, so this is a solid night for Zukic.

Etienne B: I thought he played his role nicely out there.

Butterworth B-: I want to see him shoot one, but the effort was great.

Muccio A: This was an A performance off the bench.

Run N’ Shoot:

Lerner D: 6 points? Unacceptable

Cavano C: 7 points isn’t enough either.

Kola C+: I want more from a man his size

Sutton B: Solid playing, need better captaining.

Brandon O. B-: Good early, meh as the game went on.

Johnson B+: Good shooting, seems like a microwave player and it was on last night.

Conor B: Off from 3, but contributed every where else.

Tom B: I thought Tom was awesome getting his team going in the first half.

I was playing at 70% effort for most of the game but I doubt you know what that looks like.

Lerner D: 6 points? Unacceptable

I don’t want to see this guys name mentioned in the same discussion as mine. He looked like your average B-Draft player. Skinny, unskilled, try’s hard on paper but most of his movement is inefficient. Defensively he provided little to no resistance. Number one pick? Bruh

At what percentage do you have to be at to hit the tallest guy in the league with a pass?

Rock Fight gets Sheff his first captain win

The teams with no names were in the 8pm, prime time slot of the week. Civale, was missing their captain and Doherty, while R. Shaffer and Frank were out for Sheff. One team would miss two more than the others (SPOILER ALERT). TO THE ACTION!

Young rookie Jacob…..I mean Luther Joseney, would try to immediate impress me with some tough drives to the cup for two. After one game, he looks like a pretty good pick-up for Sheff, who can obviously read rookies in the draft better than I can. His backcourt mate Musse, would join in on the fun as well, even though his shot from deep was off all evening. The prized number 5 pick was quiet, as he battled it out with Koller down low. He looked pretty meh, but maybe that his match-up. Just know, his status as a first round pick is on code red after week 1.

On the other end of the floor, it was a horror show for the top two picks on Civale. Both Koller and Leblanc were throwing up brick after brick. Therefore, the offense looked like dogshit. However, I was impressed by Koloff, who looks like he can be a good piece for this team. He has some size and he can shoot a little bit. He led the team with eight first half points, that included a couple of trey balls. Taha, brought the energy off the bench scoring 5 first half points, to go with an assist and a couple boards. Alex would also chip with 2 three pointers. The secondary guys were definitely doing their job in the first half.

The first half continued its slow and ugly play. Civale’s team took in the largest 2-point lead in history with the way both teams were scoring, 26-24. I expected the key guys on both teams to pick it up in the second half, but you don’t always get what you want……

The rock fight re-started in the second half, with both teams somehow getting worse at shooting after the break. The guys on Sheff’s team finally realized they should probably pass to Ghost more if they want some made shots and got him going a bit. Ghost would score 10 2h points with some soft hooks and Js. Eusden, finally got his second bucket of the game and finished with a third.

Civale’s team finally got something from Leblanc, who disappointed me the most tonight, not just with his socks, but with his 6 point performance. Where’s my buckets? He only finished with two assists as well, not great. Koloff and Alex slowed down from deep, combining to go 1 for 8 from deep in the second half. Although, Alex did pace the team with 7 2h points, not bad for a perceived 4th option.

The struggle for both teams wouldn’t end, but thankfully the clock kept moving and we reached crunch time. Here’s some play-by-play:

It was 45-44 Sheff, when Musse took a hard drive to the cup through a defender’s body for 2. Sheff’s team up 47-44, 4:30 remaining

Civale’s squad called a timeout to figure out how to put the ball in the net. Leblace responded with a 2, with 3:35 remaining on the clock.

A lot more bricks happened, until Luther got to the line, he went 2 for 2, bringing Sheff’s lead back to 3, 49-46.

The rest of Civale’s offense was so bad, Taha took over and scored a bucket with less than a minute remaining. A lot of these offensive possessions were taking a hot minute and I guess I’ll credit the defenses. 49-48 Sheff.

Sheff’s team got the ball into Luther, who was hacked again. He missed the front end, but Eusden was able to snag the rebound and somehow found a timeout before he gave the ball away. Timeout Sheff, with 3.5 remaining. Luther got the ball back and was fouled. This time he made 2 of 2 again. 51-48 Sheff, last timeout of team Civale.

And did they use that timeout right? Nooooo, as they just chucked the ball in and got no shot up. Game over. 51-48 Sheff, mercifully.

 Grades

Koller C: Him and Eusden even’ed each other out. Both sucked and both were there for it.

Leblanc D+: Leblanc was horrid. I expect him to get the offense going and moving, he didn’t do that. Also, didn’t score. No bien.

Alex B-: Led the way in scoring, cooled down a lot from 3 though. He can do better.

Koloff B-: Good start, but cooled down a lot as well.

Taha B+: This was a very nice Taha game, I liked his energy.

Varner C: Trick or treat Kenny, was tricking last night.

Sheff

Luther A: The rookie is off to a fast start. Gave his team the scoring output they needed.

Eusden C: Same thing as Koller. They’re going to need a lot more offense from him.

Ghost B: This is a picture perfect Ghost game, points, with nothing else.

Musse B-: Rebounded well, had a big bucket, but the shot was off.

Sheff A: Good first captain win

Nice job getting the stats and write ups done so quickly Harry!

obviously thrilled with a big win to start. Our fourth pick wasn’t even in attendance either. Teams are going to struggle to score with us. Five guys in double figures is no small feat, especially when one of them is going off for 30.

Looking forward to next week, which should provide more clarity as we see missing guys from week one make their first appearances.
