Week 5 is here, which means we’re about halfway through this season. Your hero and leader has returned from being held hostage by JetBlue. I was battered and bruised from my trip, but here I am ready to serve the masses. Speaking of the masses, people need to start posting more on the boards. After the shitty floor night, I saw a bunch of new people post, so now I know you know where to go! Huge mistake on your part! Let’s get some trash talking and conversation going.

Next week, when I feel better, we will have a mid-season power rankings, which will look a lot different than the pre-season rankings, assuming we don’t have a bunch of upsets this week. We’ll also have some award talk, so get ready for a big preview, until then you’re getting a shortened preview, because I’m coughing up crap. TO THE GREEN MUCUS INDUCED LINES!

Del Boca Vista vs. Get Rich, Die Trying 6PM Game:

Firstly, Mazz and I, need someone to cover this game. Secondly, this is a big game for Del Boca Vista, because their status as contender is fading faster than Mazz’s talent. They were able to eek out a one point win, against “We Fly High”, who was missing Sydorko, last week. Not exactly, a great win, but I think Frongi will take what he can get. My squad, had a nicer win last week, taking down the suddenly free falling, Let’s Get Tropical.

I’m too tired of coughing up crap to reverse jinx anything here, so I’ll call it like it is. DBV, is in real trouble for this game. Lagno and Frongi, are going spend all game being guarded by Pollock/Weinstein, which isn’t a good match-up for either. I suppose Lagno can get hot, but if Casey can shut him down, then Weinstein can too. Zukic, is certainly capable of going off and he had a good game last week. However, I haven’t seen them have the ability to keep him involved all game. That leaves Mazz, who will be pressured all game and the other guys to score a bunch of points. I don’t think that will be enough though.

Whether they play zone or man, I expect my team to be able to score a bunch of points. I don’t know who they think can guard Pollock/Weinstein/Shaffer, so I suspect all three will have themselves a game. Then Rich will drill a three or two, Kodra will get some lay-ups and I’ll dish some dimes. Game over baby.

Get Rich, Die Trying -7.5 over Del Boca Vista

Kawhi So Serious? vs Ghost Rider 7PM Game:

Kawhi So Serious, picked up a huge win last week, toppling title contender, A Quiet Place. The return of MVP candidate Jahred Newton, definitely helped as did some hot shooting. They will need to continue that this week against Ghost Rider, who is coming off a bad loss, without their first round pick. However, the team they played was missing their first round pick too, so no excuses for those guys.

I expect Eusden to be back this week, which will be huge, considering KSS attacks rebounds like dogs going for that last piece of meat. They just have to have it! They currently lead the league in offensive rebounding, though they strangely are last in the league in defensive rebounding (by a lot). That’s one of the weirder stats you’ll ever see in basketball. Anyways, Eusden’s presence down low will be huge for Ghost Rider this week. I also expect who ever Newton isn’t guarding to have themselves a game, whether that’s the other MVP candidate Luther or Musse, who should just give up shooting threes.

Ghost Rider is a good defensive team, so I’m not sure where KSS, is going to get all their points this week. They were almost from three last week as I mentioned, but I’m having a hard time seeing them duplicate that this week. You’re asking a lot of to have three guys shoot over 40% at a high clip from 3, two weeks in a row against a good defensive team. They’ll probably have McGirr back, but I don’t think he’ll make the difference here. Not to mention he’s going to have to chase Ghost all over the place on defense to wear him down. I think Ghost Rider rebounds in a big way here.

Ghost Rider -8 over Kawhi So Serious

A Quiet Place vs. Run N’ Shoot 8PM Game:

This game mirrors the one right before it. A Quiet Place, took a hard L last week against Kawhi So Serious, while Run N’ Shoot had a huge win against the formerly undefeated Ghost Rider. I suspect A Quiet Place, will come out hard and motivated to avenge their loss from last week, but will that be enough to win it?

A Quiet Place, kind of has a “who do I go to win this game” problem. They finally got a good scoring game from both their top picks last week, Leblanc and Koller combined for 31 points. Although, I’d expect more than 14 points for Leblanc, when he goes 4 for 7 from three point land. However, Alex laid an egg, with a one point game. One week this guy does good, the other week this guy does nothing. They have a lot of pretty good options to score, but no one has taken the mantle as go to guy. They have no one in the top 10 in PPG.

On the other side of the court, everyone on Run N’ Shoot, thinks they’re the go-to-guy on offense. They got hot from deep last week, so I imagine everyone’s light on offense just got a lot greener. That’s bad news for returning number 1 pick Dan Lerner, who really needs to get going for this team to have a bright future. Someone on this team has to step up and make sure he’s getting touches consistently. Their defense is a whole other issue, despite winning last week, their last in the league in PA.

Run N’ Shoot doesn’t match up too bad in this one, but I worry about their defensive discipline and communication on defense. I think A Quiet Place, should be able to get whatever they want. I see this as being one of the games that they should get the breakout offensive performance they’ve been lacking all season. They should run away with this game.

A Quiet Place -8.5 over Run N’ Shoot

Let’s Get Tropical vs. We Fly High 9PM Game:

We Fly High took a tough one point loss last week against Del Boca Vista, in true WFH fashion, they were missing a key player. Nonetheless, it was a good sign for these guys, who seem to moving in the right direction. Let’s Get Tropical, on the other hand, is falling faster and harder than Chris Paul’s legacy. What the hell is wrong with these guys?

The thing that stands out the most about LGT, is that they’re averaging 5 assists a game. That is just an inexcusable number to have through four games of the season. Djordje has to pick someone and tell them their job is get people going. Filip, has been at point for a lot of the games I saw, so he has to be moved out of that role ASAP. Whether, he comes off the bench or what, someone else needs to get a shot here. Cawley, wouldn’t be a bad option at point guard. They just need someone who’s going to get the ball moving and everyone else needs to be a little less selfish. They have the lowest PPG in the league too, which a bunch of guys who can score. This team needs a “come to Jesus” meeting.

We Fly High, has looked a lot better in the past weeks. Having everyone available to them is a good thing, who knew? I like this match-up for them, because they’re going to play hard and bring it for the full 44 minutes. That means a lot against a team like LGT, who’s hanging on by a thread. WE Fly High should be able to generate pressure and get out on the fast break. They just need to able to make a couple treys, here and there.

The preseason line for this game, might have been in the double digits, but no more. I like We Fly High, to keep this game close with their high energy style of play. LGT, has shown me less and less each week. They will need to slave their inner demons, before I believe in them again.

We Fly High -2 over Let’s Get Tropical

-8.5 seems like an optimistic/aggressive line for us. RNS seems like a bit of a tough team to get a handle on for me, but they do have a handful of guys that can go off (their last draft pick up 29 last week?) and we got ourselves in a big early hole last week. Ideally, we don’t allow a bunch of 3’s in the first 5 minutes this time.

Mostly agree with the other lines. Would like to see an upset in game 1, and seems possible if DBV clicks, but Mazz hasn’t found his rhythm with this league/team so far and Get Rich seems to have relatively good personnel to deal with DBV, so a bit of a tough outlook. LGT theoretically has the size to deal with WFH’s paint attack, so if they’re on the same page they could grab it (big if). Wise/Eusden could be a fun matchup in game 2 – contrasting big man styles (bulk vs speed) that both hit the boards aggressively.

Sydorko, do know which of your guys are gonna be there tonight? Just so I can get a better idea of what level of player we can approve for tonight.

Ralph (my first round pick) is back — not sure if he’s going to make it to tonight’s game. I expect Newton to have a big game and get Wise involved more down low. Cantoni and I have to hit our 3’s for us to stay competitive without Ralph.

Good win by Harry and team (Joel we all know who the real puppet master is). I think this is one of the better games our team has played, solid defense, physical rebounding, and better ball movement. Despite the loss I fell good about where our team is at and we’ll see how things go for the rest of the season and come playoffs.

That said how was the floor for the rest of the night? There was a funny moment in our game where Mazz fell after being fouled, the ref took a timeout to clean up the sweat, Mazz shot his free throws, and Pollock inbounded the ball to immediately fall on his face on the sweaty spot. I can’t imagine it got much better as the night went on…

8pm game was mostly ok, a couple slips that i remember on hard plants / change of direction attempts. Not nearly as bad as a couple weeks ago.

It got bad for the 9pm game. The middle two games weren’t that bad, but the 9pm game it was almost back to unplayable.

Get Rich Holds on Late

The first game of the night was between my squad and Del Boca Vista. We were missing Liam, while Etienne and Butterworth was out for DBV. Joel, would arrive late for my team as well. TO THE ACTION!

Marlon, started the game right away, much to my dismay as I didn’t have my sneakers on yet. Therefore, Rich got the start and looked sexier than ever getting it. I did find my jersey I left there on Thursday though, so that’s a win for me! Anyways, my team started the game off slowly. We seem to being this problem offensively, where we pass up open looks and drive into harder ones. That’s something I will work on fixing in the future, but we need to take our open shots, especially the threes (Pollock).

DBV looked pretty good defensively in the first half. They did a good job of communicating and limiting fast break opportunities. They were able to jump out to a 4-6 point lead, with Mazz finally looking like a first round pick and Muccio hitting some treys. Muccio, once again, brought some good energy to the team. They also took advantage of some defensive break downs, that led me to using both my timeouts with about 7 minutes left in the half. I think that was when DBV reached their biggest lead of the game at 8 or 10.

Joel arrived about midway through the first half and that naturally helped our cause. Our team has a lot of mismatches, which led to Frongi, trying to guard Joel in the post. That’s a win for us and we were able to get some easy hoops in the post. Joel had himself a nice And-1. DBV still into the half with the lead though, 30-28.

DBV kept my squad at bay for the first part of the second half. Mazz, was able to connect from deep a couple times and converted some nice drives to the hoop. Zukic, had a nice put-back rebound over me and was able to nail a jumper. However, the two secondary scorers of DBV, weren’t up for the challenge tonight. Frongi and Lagno combined for 5 points in the game. Was that part of the strategy? Sure was, but that’s a still way too little from those guys. Even when they go up against good defenders they need more than 1 bucket apiece. Maybe the Mazz of old could carry them, but not this C-League version.

The second part of the second half is when we made a run. We did a great job of getting defensive rebounds and pushing the pace. I believe Weinstein scored a bucket off my d-board and outlet pass to give us the lead. Then we built it up to 6 and DBV called a timeout. We are dangerous when we get out in transition and make teams guard us in the open court.

I believe we got the lead to about 10, before DBV started to pick away at the lead. Then it got into free throw territory, which gave everyone a chance to miss their free throws. Man, do we suck from the line. Weinstein went 1 of 2, Pollock missed the front end of 1-1, I missed the front end of 1-1, I think Joel missed a 1-1 on the front end. We might be worse from the line than Ben Simmons at this point. DBV, used all these extra chances to get the ball down 3. They were somehow able to get 3 chances to tie it, but Mazz missed two attempts and Lagno was off on the other, so we survived. 59-56 Final.

Grades

Kodra B: This was a good Kodra game, play solid on offense and defense.

Harry A+ sexiness C game: Foul down 3 you idiot and make your free throws.

Shaffer A-: I like this Joel who gets buckets.

Weinstein C+: He was off in this one.

Martins B: Very solid off the bench, less taking it up though, that’s what we have guards for.

Rich A++ sexiness C+ game: Had a hot board that I’m still not over.

Pollock C+: Shoot threes and make your free throws.

DBV

Mazz B+: Looked like a scorer again, but missed two treys to tie it. No clutch gene.

Lagno D+: Defense was pretty good, but offense was non-existent.

Muccio B+: He’s giving exactly what they need out there.

Zukic B-: I need him giving me double-doubles.

Christian B: I liked his aggression, had a nice And-1 as well. Good game from him.

Frongi C+: A good rebounding game saves his grade from bad to pretty oookkkk.

Yeah the floor was bad for the 9pm game. The court conditions should not be impacting the results of the game. There were multiple times where guys were moving with the ball, slipped and the ref called a travel on them. Also having to call multiple official timeouts to mop the floor is not what you want for a basketball game. I hope floor conditions get better at CCC cause people are gonna get hurt if we continue see the same floor conditions.

With that said, overall our team played a lot better and I think we’re starting build a steady flow in our offense and utilizing guys’ individual skill sets to the benefit of the team’s play.

straight up destroyed us on the boards, the endless amount of second chance points sealed our fate. team outworked us all game, though we cut it to 3 with a few minutes ago before you hit a few big 3s. guard was a major pest, hats off to the energizer bunny, dude was relentless bringing it all game. mike was a ghost out there, barely touched the ball.. though had an impact on the defensive side

court conditions are deplorable by the later games, which apparently is the only time slot gifted to our squad. players are insistently hitting the floor, whether on the offensive or defensive side.. which leads to both 2x officials being on the same side to mop up following the latest spill, meanwhile the game action continues on the opposite end. the fact they have to constantly be cleaning, is awfully telling on how bad the courts are becoming. a single mop to clean up 4x games worth of dudes who instantly sweat upon entering the center is laughable

Tropical Skies Prevent Jet from Flying

The most disappointing team in the league was treated accordingly this week and given the 9pm slot, against We Fly Again. Sticking to their brand, We Fly High, was once again missing MacDonald and their 2nd pick in the draft Mike B. Let’s Get Tropical was only missing rookie Maz. TO THE ACTION!

Keeping with the same theme of being on brand, both the first half was a complete rock fight. Both teams had a lot of trouble finding the bottom of the hoop. Dwyer, with girl friend in attendance, led all scorers with 11 first half points. WFH, opened with a zone, allowing Dwyer to get a couple clean looks at the rim off some nice passing from Filip. LGT’s offense still looked out of sync in this half and the game. There isn’t a lot of motion, movement or general idea on how to help each other.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMIR connected on a three for WFH, but their offense too was quite a mess. Etheridge, was aggressing going to the hoop, but wasn’t able to convert. Andre Jones, was also extra aggressive, but that led to a lot of bad looking jump shots. It isn’t much of an upset to see these guys struggle against an athletic defense. They just don’t have much in the way of creative scorers, who can shoot.

LGT went into the half up 26-17 as the floor got a lot worse as the game went on. Sydorko, picked up a T as well, for chucking the ball Bully style into the rafters. Hopefully, he got that out of his system, because his Thursday captain won’t appreciate those kind of Ts.

The rock fight continued in the second half, Cawley, was finally able to get his first and only basket of the game. Manny, off the LGT’s bench, had a huge game in this one. He went 4 for 10 from 3, including a 3 for 3 stretch at one point. However, Filip, Djordje and Clasby would only combined for 2 second half points. Not a great sign for these guys. They don’t appear to be able to get everyone going at once. Like I mentioned in my preview, someone else needs to be handed the keys to this offense. You aren’t going to win many games scoring in the 40s.

Thankfully for LGT, We Fly High’s offense wasn’t much better. Etheridge, was like a mad man driving to the cup in the second half. He would lead his team with 7 2h points, but a whole lot of misses. He would go 1 for 10 from the free throw line in this game. WFH, would go a combined 1 for 8 from three point land. They couldn’t get any looks to fall and they had a lot of bad misses. Unlike LGT, they just don’t have the right pieces, at least during this team to get a lot of offense going.

WFH, was able to get into the bonus, with 7:30 left in the game, but most of those free throws went to Etheridge. LGT, was never in any danger of blowing this game and held on to win 48-40.

Grades

Jet C+: The Jet wasn’t flying as high, probably due to the bad floor.

Etheridge C: Good aggression out there, but free throw shooting killed it.

Sydorko C-: Good rebounding, bad technical and he was off from the line as well.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMIR B+ sexiness, C Game: Make a shot you bum.

Jones C: He took a lot of questionable shots and didn’t hit many.

Agresti C+: Good rebounding and passing, but I need a bucket.

LGT

Cawley D: I’m going to have to start adjusting the Cawley scale if I keep getting these games.

Dwyer B+: Was one of the only two people who could score in this game.

Filip B: Better shot selection and passing tonight.

Djordje B-: Back to rebounding is good, his 4 shot free throw and T, sucked though.

Clasby D+: No attempted 3s? 4 points? Yuck.

Manny A-: When someone on your bench gives you 19, it’s a hell of an effort. The minus is for him somehow getting to 10 three point attempts.

Ian B-: Had some good O-boards and I think one of maybe two on his team to make the extra pass to an open guy.

Maloof return ends in defeat

There was breaking news before the game by Pranam, who informed us that his first round pick would indeed be in attendance for this one. However, he was going to be late. Musse, was missing for Ghost Rider and the only one missing for both teams (at the end). Would Ghost Rider be able to rebound after last week’s defeat? TO THE ACTION!

Cantoni came out guns blazing for KSS, hitting three straight treys to start the game. Ghost Rider was in a zone and kept losing track of him. I’m not surprised, since Musse does most of the communicating on this team. KSS, doesn’t have many shooters, so you have to find the ones that can shoot it when you zone up. This allowed KSS, to get in a short lead through the first part of the half.

Things would start to shift as Ottomatic was somehow put on Ghost to start the game. Naturally, this led to Ghost scoring a bunch of buckets in the first half. Shame on everyone who knows Ghost on that team allowing that to happen. Luther and Eusden did their usual work as well in the first half. Luther, is like a bowling ball on drives and I’d like to thank him for winning me Etheridge’s. 10 bucks (though he really had nothing to do with it).

The teams went back and forth, trading buckets in the first half. Cantoni, added another three pointer, to give him four for the half. Ghost led his team with 12 1h points and Newton, registered 4 assists. It was 35-34 KSS going into the half. Also of note, Maloof showed up with 5 minutes left in the first half and the game tied up. On to the second half.

Sheff, decided he wanted to increase his assist average on the season, so he started passing to Ghost every chance he got. This time, Ghost was torturing McGirr, who kept trying to blame his teammates who losing Ghost on the baseline, where he don’t miss ever. Sheff, had 7 assists in the game and I think at least 5 or more went to Ghost. Feed the big man.

KSS, started to fade offensively in the second half. Their first round pick was here, but he wasn’t doing much to score. Ralph, only had 2 points in the game and with Newton struggling to find his shot, KSS’s offense was dying. I noticed for some reason Cantoni, changed into highlighter looking sleeves, which was weird, considering how hot he was in the first half. Let those arms breathe baby.

Ghost Rider’s offense was just too much for KSS to keep up with in this game. If it wasn’t Ghost, it was Eusden down low or Luther getting to the cup. KSS, couldn’t keep answering and would fall 66-53.

Grades:

Ghost A: The prototypical Ghost game, 20 points and 1 rebound.

Eusden A: Very good performance out of the rookie, who looks to have settled in.

Luther B: Shot was off, but did a good job getting to the line and matching McGirr’s screams.

Shaffer C-: Crappy shooting day.

Frank B-: Frank had a couple sneaky nice plays that I must acknowledge.

Lindsay B-: Had a nice And-1 and a big O-board.

Sheff B: Did a great job passing to Ghost.

KSS

Pranam C: Needs to hit those treys on this team.

Newton C-: Filled it up, but the scoring touch wasn’t there.

McGirr C-: No boards? Losing Ghost multiple times? tsk tsk

Wise B-: Not horrible, but a decent performance, especially on the glass.

Ottomatic C-: Where’s the baseline J?

Cantoni A: I’d say he did his job out there.

Jonathon B: Hit his threes and was good on the O-boards.

Ralph INC: Showed up very late, so nothing yet.

A Quiet Place silences Run N’ Shoot

AQP was coming off a crappy loss last week to KSS and was looking to rebound against Run N’ Shoot, who had an upset over the firmly undefeated team last week. Koloff and Alex were out for AQP, while Tom and Kola would show up late for Run N’ Shoot. TO THE ACTION!

Both teams had their offenses working pretty well in the first half. Taha, Civale, Leblanc and Doherty, all connected from deep in the first half of AQP. Taha, also had an eclectic drive to the hoop and finish that made all kinds of frisky. Taha’s energy for AQP, has been huge all season and I demand it’s acknowledgement! I thought Leblanc looked a lot better as well, directing traffic and getting his teammates in the right spot. Koller, also contributed down low, finding some mismatches. He led his team with 10 1h points.

On the other side of the court, Lerner, finally had it going for his guys. Lerner, would score 13 1h points, which were crucial, because his team was really struggling from deep. They would only hit one first half three and then none the rest of the game. Not a great sign for a team that likes to pull a lot, they went 1 for 11 from 3 in the first half.

AQP went into the half up 40-30, Run N’ Shoot, finally got their full squad there though. ON TO THE SECOND HALF!

The second half can be compiled into two words, Christian Doherty. The same Christian Doherty, that hurt his ankle and cost Fermon and myself a championship. Are we still bitter? Maybe…..maybe not! Anyways, Christian, would go 4 for 6 from 3, leading every single player on the court. If I wasn’t in need of a nap or knew that only a few will read this Friday write-up, I’d do a funny section on Christian against the entire Run N’ Shoot team, but no dice.

Yes, Christian’s 12 points, were more than Run N’ Shoot’s second half point total. Cawley, on the sidelines pointed out during the second half, that Lerner seemed to be sitting awfully long. Either way, the Run N’ Shoot’s offense was DOA in this second half. All, but two players, were unable to record a second half fg. No one was able to hit a three. It just sucked a lot. AQP, outside of Doherty, wasn’t that much better either. It was a damn ugly second half and I’m glad it’s long since over, AQP won 61-39. Yes, Run N’ Shoot had a 9 point half.

Grades

Koller A-: This looks closer to what a first round pick’s numbers should look like.

Trick or Treat Kenny D+: They broke my Kenny.

Taha B+: Taha stayed be electric, but went 0 for 3 from the line.

Civale C+: His shot is still off, he’s waiting until he plays my team.

Leblanc C+: I thought Leblanc was back in the first half, then he had a scoreless second half. Womp, womb.

Doherty A+: Outscored the other team in the second, that alone deserves an A+

Run N’ Shoot

Johnson D+: Missed out on his A+ game and I’m back for the trash game.

Conor B-: I like the way this kid communicates out there to his teammates.

Sutton C+: Going to need a little more from him out there.

Cavano C-: When you’re drafted high, you can’t not have double digits boards or points;

Brandon O. D+: Scoreless second half went they need his buckets is no good.

Lerner B: This was a good Lerner game, still need more though.

Tom C+: Get to your game on time

Kola C-: Biggest guy on the court, but can’t score. I need buckets big man.
