Nimrods grind down Baxter-less 7FC

Both of these squads were coming off upset wins in round 1, leading to a rare 6v7 seed matchup in the semifinal. Prior to tipoff, it was made clear that Baxter would not be in attendnace, dealing a major blow to 7FC's hopes. The Nimrods had everyone in attendance.

Starting off, it looked as though 7FC might not miss Baxter so much after all. They hit some quick early shots from outside (Jeff and Jacques each hit an early 3), while the Nimrods struggled get anything going at all. After a few minutes, 7FC had jumped out to an quick 10-0 lead, which as Cavano astutely noted, was not a great start for the Nimrods. They finally broke the seal on a Kahana 3, which seemed to get them going a little bit. Cavano was making an impact with his defense, sliding over as a help defender to block a couple early shots and poke the ball away for multiple steals. Those plays were key in not allowing 7FC to stretch their early lead even more.

Cavano then started chipping in on offense, letting it fly from deep and hitting at a high rate. He was locked in, going 4/6 from 3 in the first half and also dishing out a couple assists. 7FC weathered the Nimrods response, and managed to stretch the lead back out to 21-13 on a McNabb 3, part of a hot shooting start that saw 7FC go 5/9 from deep to open the game. Jet remarked on their hot start, saying "I hope we don't regress to the mean." Sadly for him, that's exactly what happened, as their shooting went cold, and they couldn't get much going inside. From that point on, it was all Nimrods - they took their first lead on a Cavano 3, and ended the half on a 16-3 run.

I think Cavano nailed his final 3 of the first half right before the buzzer, and the Nimrods took a 29-24 lead at the break. Cavano led all scorers with 12, while Jacques led 7FC with 8.

The second half mostly consisted of seeing if 7FC would be able to get back in the game, and it slowly becoming clear that they couldn't. Jet and Etheridge started being more aggressive, but they just couldn't generate many easy looks outside of a few transition opportunities. The Nimrods weren't exactly lighting it up on offense, but they were patient and also hustled hard, beating out 7FC for several o-boards and loose balls (not a good sign for 7FC, given that they had so little margin for error). Kerk and Laporte each had some nice plays in that area, including a save-assist from Kerk to Kahana that pushed the lead to 12.

7FC battled, including Jet steals and transition scoring, Jacques buckets (he played well in the second half, putting up 13), and Etheridge hard work inside, but without Baxter they just couldn't quite keep up. Nimrods crowded the paint on defense, and after that 5/9 start from 3, 7FC shot 3/17 from deep for the rest of the game. Not a recipe for success. Ironically, one of those triples they did hit was from Etheridge, his second of the season, and 12th of his CAC career. Nimrods kept their lead around 10-12 for most of the second half, and didn't let it get too close at any point down the stretch.

Overall, this is probably the result you'd expect with Baxter out. Nimrods had that ugly start, but they got it together and just had more balance and talent than 7FC in this one.
