Winter 2013: 5v5 Draft League Champs: Special Tiny Deviants

STD Shocks the World or at least a couple people Cambridge Y
Special Tiny Deviants 61 Groupon to Poundtown 56

Even though the clock almost struck midnight before the game was over (late start) Cinderella lived on as JC’s Special Tiny Deviants came back late to take the W13 5v5 draft title 61-56 over Brett’s Groupon to Poundtown. This was the 3rd straight championship for JC and certainly his most unlikely. Dan Iter led the way for the always balanced STD with 16 while Brett paced his own squad with 19.

The game started out with great set play execution from GTP as Brooks found Brett for the alley oop.

Unfortunately – that was about all GTP could muster early on. Weisberg’s defense and passing keyed several early opportunities for the STD and they cashed in; building a 10-4 lead 4 minutes in.

They seemingly could not miss and their lead ballooned to 23-10 at the end of the first quarter. The usually potent GTP offense was inert. Brooks was playing more of a distributer role thanks to Gael’s smothering D and no one on GTP besides Brett was converting. Brooks finally got in on the scoring with 2 trifectas late in the first frame, cutting the STD lead to 34-27 with 4 minutes left. STD finally went cold, unable to score for the last 5 minutes of the half. With under a minute left Brett converted a strong rack attack, Kit grabbed a carom and eventually scored and, finally, Brett stole STD’s inbound pass and banked it in from long range as the horn sounded. The score? 36-34 GTP in a half seeming dominated by STD. GTP ended the half on a 20-5 run to take the lead. Their improved defense was the catalyst as the open looks STD was locating early on were suddenly harder to find than a good commercial during this year’s super bowl.

To start the 2nd frame Kosta Kritikos nailed his 3rd 3 ball of the night. On the next possession he used his unique shooting motion to draw a foul in the act. Unfortunately, he decided to employ the seldom seen FT pump faking. This caused every single person to commit a lane violation and the ball went back to GTP as they clung to a 43-42 lead with 15 minutes remaining. The rest of the game saw both teams tighten up on offense as buckets became few and far between. A steal and coast to coast finish from Gael brought STD to within 47-44 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

For those of you scoring at home that is a 11-10 3rd quarter. The 4th would not be much better. STD dominated on the boards and used 2nd, 3rd and 4th chance opportunities to hang around. With 6 minutes left they were still only down 4: 53-49. Next possession Jason Heald hit a huge 3 to dump the GTP lead to 6. Unfortunately, he took his as a sign that he should shoot a 3 on the next 3 possessions: missing them all. During that time the STD closed to within 1 and finally took the lead on a Dan Iter bucket with 1 minute remaining: 57-56. Brooks missed from downtown on the next possession and Iter went 1/2 from the line for STD. Devon Oslowski was able to grab a huge O board on the miss despite what looked like a possible over the back maneuver on the smaller GTP player. No whistle though and STD went back to the line for more FTs. This time Gael decided to commit the lane violation though, essentially turning the ball over back to GTP. Brett got a wide open look in the corner for the win but it clanged off the rim, Kit grabbed the O board and was promptly fouled. This put a good FT shooter at the line, down 2, with 15 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, this happened:

If it makes anyone feel better, one of the first GIFs Tibb\'s ever made was of my squad missing an open lay up to take the B Draft Unification Title despite coming into the game as 22 point underdogs. And no, I will not like you that GIF. On the next possession Devon (started the season 2/14 from the line) went 2/2 from the stripe to put the final nail in the coffin and make the STD your W13 5v5 Draft Champions.

Great season all around! Going through off season withdrawl? Well it won’t last long, the combine is less than a week away (4/23) and the draft will be that following Saturday (4/27), LIVE from CAC headquarters. Feel free to come down for some pick-up and the draft.
