Fall 2008: A 5v5 League Champs: Wolverines

    Sweet redemption for the Wolverines
Bad Man Soup 71 The Wolverines 76

Breaking out of the pre-game huddle of the Wolverines they say ìhard workî and that is precisely what they needed in this one. Coming into this game BMS where the heavy favorites with MVP candidate Demuth suited up for this one it looked like things might go by the wayside. BMS had the height advantage in almost every position so it seemed they had advantages on the defensive and offensive ends of the floor. BMS was seemingly in control of this uptempo physical game from the get-go which forced the Wolverines to call a relatively quick timeout. After gathering their thoughts and settling into what they wanted to do on the defensive end the Wolverines were able to weather the storm and make counter punches of their own, thanks in large part to the stellar first half performances from Hugh Coleman and Zack Ray.

Towards the end of the 1st half Ray went up for a layup when he was undercut by Crotty and landed squarely on his back. After getting up and gingerly hitting 1 of 2 ftís he took himself out and wouldnít return till the 2nd half of play. From seeing this I thought the Wolverines would be in big trouble as Ray was having a great game finding the open man and pushing the tempo of the game as he saw fit. The Wolves close out the 1st half on a 9-2 run.  Halftime and its 36-33 in favor of BMS

Second half starts and Z Ray is still wincing on the bench insert Shawn Brown for the Wolverines who is one of the best shooters on either team. The Wolves grab their first lead of the game at the 13 minute mark in the 2nd half and the teams make lead changes for the next 6 minutes. Zack X-Ray comes back in with 6 mins to play and hits a 3 right off the bat. BMS up now 70-67 with 3 minutes left to go and this one seems to be pretty much wrapped up. Ohhh but wait here is the tremendous outside shooting of Hugh Coleman who dropped 25 points and 5 boards on the night. BMS was effective at shutting down Shawn Brown and Ed Walker but this team has too many weapons. Like I said before anyone of these guys could be the leading scorerís in the league.

Tie game (70-70) with 1:22 left on the clock and Crotty is fouled at the top of the key by Big Nic and he has fouled out of the contest with 10 points, 3 boards, 2 steals, and 1 block. He played great defense on all the big men from BMS. Crotty hits one of 2 from the line and BMS would not score again despite their best efforts. Hugh, and X-Ray knock down some clutch FTís to seal the W for the Wolverines.

Wolverines will take on Eat It to Beat It on Thursday night at 8pm at the Boys and Girls Club

It's a Big Nice Upset City Baby!!!; Millrats Get Oral

Oh man this game was like the watching the end of Usual Suspects:  I did not see this coming.

In the first half, the Nice was absolutely dominating.  Awad was easily getting to the rack, while Mazz was knocking down jumpers and making the extra pass to set up his teammates.  Yes, I said Mazz was making extra passes.  Grizzly Adams did have a beard.  Press was continually cutting to the rack and closing on his layups like an expert wedding crasher once he spots a chick with a tramp stamp.  End result, the boys had themselves a 20 pt lead at one point.

However, this Millrat squad can pump out buckets faster than I can fire off a round of knuckle children.  Noah and Shid rained down trey after trey, hard take after hard take.  During the second half, the Millrats got Oral and man it felllllt goooooood.  Oral manned up big time to drop treys and some big boy takes to cut the lead to 3 before Chamberlain drilled a corner 3 to tie the game up.

At this point, the Nice absolutely manhandled the Rats on the offensive glass.  4 straight possessions, PStone and Awad tossed in offensive put backs to give lead back to the Nice.  Again, Shid and Noah hit back to back treys to cut the lead to 2 before the Nice put on a passing clinic.  They finally started making bang bang passes to get easy buckets.

With under 2 mintues to play, the real men stood up and made plays.  Noah found Flesh Balloon Fortitude Shid for a huge 3 to cut the lead to 1.

On the next possessions, Mazzy and Awad nailed clutch FTs to put the Nice up 4, only to have Sweet Sweet Oral nail a 40 footer with 8 seconds to play.  Steve Grace had to go to the line for what turned out to be the game icing FTs as the Rats couldnt convert on the other end.

Great win for the Nice to help salvage the "Season on the Brink"

Do A Tical; MA Plays their V-Card to Seal the Deal

The MA came out blazing after a disappointing loss last week.  In the first half, Griff was tossin his guns around, getting after offensive rebounds like a stripper gets after your GW's.  Not only was Griff all over the glass, he and V were working the pick and roll to perfection.  Of course Griff loves setting picks on little guys, frickin bully!  Everything was going MA's way as Bob had the boys on point, even leading by example.  Bob wasnt in the game 2 seconds when he snatched an offensive rebound and tossed it to V for 3 to give MA a whopping 16 point lead.

LTD battled back late in the half.  Colin was chasing V around all half on the defensive end, but on the offensive end, he was playin matchmaker for those who had "rock love."  BA got hot late in the half, while Adam Jack Baur tossed in his best game of the season.  Adam was snatchin boards and burying jays to get LTD back in the game.  He was the "clear!" guy in the back of the paramedic becuase he brought the LTD offense back to life.  At one point they were down 16 and as the half expired he caught a great look from Brady to cut the lead to 5 going into the half.

In the second half, LTD completed their comeback as the crowd favorite, Ry Pat, brought the crowd (all 3 of them) to their feet with a long trey to tie the game up.

MA could have folded like orygamy, but my boys got tough.  Matty 5 Bars answered the call of duty by burying a couple treys, while the Griffin brothers (who did not do a lot of Ref MastaDebating tonight) continued to work the glass.

The momentum swung back in favor of LTD when Brady came up with a banker trey (the Bank was open on Veterans day apparently) and a couple FTs to give LTD a 4 pt lead with 1:30 to play.  On the ensuing possession, V nailed and absolute missel from 40 feet out.  LTD failed to convert from the FT line and again V came down, got to the rack and got the hack.  He nailed the FTs to go up 1.  Griff would add another FT to put MA up 2 before LTD got a shot to tie the game.  At the buzzer, the shot rimmed out and MA held on for their rebound game.  (Dont fall in love, it s only a rebound)
