Fall 2009: A 5v5 League Champs: Millrats

Millrats Outlast Upper Crust to Become A5v5 F09 Champs
The Millrats 83 Upper Crust 80

The A5v5 League closed down the fall session in Charlestown saw the Millrats defeated Upper Crust by the final score of 83-80 in an insanely epic and well-played contest between very good basketball teams.

It's incredible to see the speed and the skill of everyone on the court up close at this level. A lot of former collegiate players and really good high school players were playing in this one. The athleticism, the basketball IQ, the lack of missed shots, etc. is incredible and it's a big reason why this is THE ELITE league in the city, especially coupled with a friendly atmosphere, CAC can't be beat.

Early on in the game, Millrats got after this early by jumping out to a 10-2 lead. Stanley Ocitti and Basil Wajd were doin' work as they got their shots falling. For such a big dude, Stanley has a sweet jumper, even with great defense all over him. Still, Upper Crust ain't no joke as they come stormin' right back on the strength of Mike Crotty's incredible shooting. For about eight minutes, Upper Crust wasn't missing anything as Chuck Abba and Ben Coffin (another center with the stroke) each hit timely threes. Then, Crotty nailed back-to-back threes as Upper Crust took a 26-20 lead midway through the first half. They were lookin' good at this point.

And out came the Millrats as Ocitti kept his hot shooting up as he was able to land two killer threes. Ocitti had 17 at the break as he proved to be unguardable with the height and shooting ability combined. Still, it was the Millrats D that was on fire as they held Upper Crust to just two points in the last eight minutes of the half. Upper Crust led 31-27 and they went into halftime trailing 43-33. Sure, the shots weren't falling, but Wajd and Robert Taylor smartly attacked the basket. They got to the stripe, which also maxed their time of possession with the ball. Feel-good half for Millrats, but a lot of hoops left.

Tell that to the Millrats as they kept punishing Upper Crust. The next twelve minutes saw the Millrats extend their lead into double digits as they held a lead of 15 at one point. Jason Tardio had a big second half (9 2nd half points) as did Robert Taylor (12 2nd half points). Millrats were up 62-52 with 10:00 to go and Upper Crust went a real big stretch without any large gains. It felt as though the knockout blow could have been landed at any times, but the Crust showed their resiliency down the stretch.

The UC big man, Ben Coffin, nailed back-to-back threes and suddenly we had a five-point game with 5:00 left. Then, Crotty pulls up and nails a huge three. Millrats lead 67-65. Basil comes down and cans a huge shot to put it back up to four for the 'Rats. In the next two minutes, Upper Crust couldn't convert any makes but they dared Benn Cluff to shoot an open three and he nails a huge killshot. Two Taylor free throws later and the Millrats lead it 74-67 with 2:00 left to go. From there, it ended and the Millrats walked away happily ever after...

Except that wasn't the case at all. Sure, it was situational scoring time with fouls and free throws the rest of the way sprinkled in with some miracle threes from Mike Crotty. Millrats did a decent job at the line, but the lead kept getting chipped at, just a point at a time as Upper Crust amazingly put up 13 points in the last two minutes. Crotty even dove head first into Tardio as we had fresh blood from a hard-nosed head-to-head collision out there.Still, it just wasn't enough as Ben Logan (Tardio's sub) came in off the bench to hit the last free throw of the game with :03 and then his miss was KO'd around the basket as Upper Crust was unable to cork a hail mary to force overtime.

What a fantastic basketball game. Unbelievable display by Upper Crust (Crott was insanely good, getting 31 in a variety of ways) as they fought literally until the last second. Stanley Ocitti earns his MVP honors with a team-high 23 points as he dominated big stretches of the game for Millrats. A complete team effort as all six guys chipped in with big moments throughout the game. Congratulations to the Millrats for being crowned the prestigious A5v5 Fall 2009 Champs!!!
