Overlooked much of the season as a middle-of-the-road team feeling it's way out during its inaugural season, Sugar Chicken made a hell of a statement in these playoffs. As a #5 seed, sitting at 6-5, most didn't expect them to get out of their first round game with 3E. After blowing them away by 42, some stood up an noticed, but still thought they'd simiply be roadkill for Tuesday Night Lights. Uh, yea, after laying the smackdown to MixTape and Co. by 22, they couldn't possibly take down Living the Dream, could they? After all, both TNL & LTD had but beatdowns on them in the regular season. That's one magical run to knock off a pair of teams that handed your @$$ to you on a silver plater.
Had there been a whole lot of hype for these two new squads, the Championship Game would have lived up to, and surpassed, such hype easily. After just 6 minutes of play, the scored was 22-19 in favor of Sugar Chicken, and there was no way, I thought, they could keep up such a blistering pace. But both teams came out En Fuego from downtown, trading blow after blow. Ryan and Stockwell were red hot, dropping 20 quick points for Living the Dream, while Zukowski (35 points, 10 boards) was a blistering 6-9 from downtown in the first frame for Sugar Chicken. As the game worn on, and guys started shooting a fewer threes, relatively, Steve Lavapacelo (24 points, 6 assists) just took over. Is there anything he can't do on either end of the floor? He pushed the pace for Sugar Chicken and scored at will, leading his team to a 49-45 halftime lead.
The second half ended the same way as the first, with Sugar Chicken on a roll. They decided to get Cullen McCarthy involved and they sprinted out to an 11-0 run to start the second half. McCarthy notched 20 points and 14 boards on the night and ate up Living the Dream's D. With Zukowski still getting any shot he wanted, and Lava running the point, it looked like we had a blowout on our hands.
But Living the Dream wasn't going to go quietly into the night. Hell they beat CTown Fire last week, preventing them a spot in the Finals for the first time since they joined the league. Brian Andruskiewicz (27 points, 16 boards) put his squad on his broad shoulders as they tried to chip away at the deficit. Todd Checovich chipped in with 9 as well and a well placed timeout slowed the assault. But the 3 point shooting went icecold in the second half, and Living the Dream shot only 13/43 on the night. Sugar Chicken knew, coming in what damage that Nick Checovich (9 points) could do from behind the arc. They pressured him all night, and a shocking 3-13 performance from downtown was the result, definitely one of the keys to the upset.
The game never got closer than 10 in the second half after the intial burst, and Sugar Chicken cruised to their first Title Belt, in their first season. Lava takes home the Playoff MVP for a dominating 3 week stretch that saw him score 73 points and hand out 19 assists. Tommy Pagos put together a heck of a squad and he has a squabble for beign left out of the GM of the Year award. Will Sugar Chicken be back to defend their title next season?? If so, they'll have a giant bullseye on their back, and everyone will be bringing their A game.
