SPRING 2022: A 5v5 League Champs: GOATS

GOATs Dominate in A League Finals
Goats 71 West Coast Elite 48

The GOATs, as usual, came out strong, and didn't look back to seal the A League Championship. Their strong team play led to open shots and easy buckets all night, with the main beneficiary being Mike Maher. Maher finished with 19 points on a blistering five for six from three, while adding 4 assists, 2 boards, and 1 steal. His smooth shot was falling, which opened up opportunities for teammates, and as the game progressed he showcased his ability to put the ball on the floor and make plays for others. The big man trio of Garrett Stephenson, Kyle Doucette, and Jake "Draymond Green" Wisniewski played their usual game. Stephenson came up with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 1, steal, and 1 block, but his ability to kick out from down low opened up the entire offense. He finished with 3 assists. Doucette dominated down low from the jump, finishing with 15 points and 8 rebounds, plus a thunderous block. Wisniewski only had 7 points, but his 11 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, and high level trash talking edge played a huge role in the GOATs victory. His ability to grab a rebound, push the ball up court, and make a play is a huge asset to any team, as is his ability to tell opponents they suck. Kyle Gavin came off the bench to start, but made an immediate impact, finishing with 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 assist. His offensive variety makes him difficult to guard, as he can spot up from three, hit mid range pull-ups, and maneuver finishes inside. Sharpshooter Lou Doherty only finished with 6 points, but he added 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals, and 1 huge block. His willingness to make the extra pass all season, despite being one of the best shooters in the whole league, ultimately reflects the GOATs unselfish play and put them over the top.

West Coast Elite was an excellent team all season, well deserving of their spot in the championship, but they simply couldn't get things going this game. Leading scorer Jordan Rote played a solid game, finishing with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. At one point early in the second half, he made an excellent steal in transition, beat the defense to the cup, but the ball slipped out of his hands as he was going up, which about sums up the game for West Coast Elite. Andrew Mayleben added 10 points and 3 rebounds, plus some strong interior defense. Carlin Haymon had 7 points and 4 boards, but also added a ridiculous 7 steals. His defense presence has been among the best in the league all season, using his strength and agility to get under almost anyone. Jack Fay played very well, but unfortunately couldn't get his shot going. He finished with 5 points, but added 6 rebounds , 4 assists, and 1 steal, plus some solid defense. Tim Reale added 5 points, 5 boards, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

Congratulations to both teams on a great season, and congratulations to the GOATs on a well earned championship.
