Fall 2011: A Draft League Champs: Overrated

Overrated Nips CAC Elite Behind 1124 Three Point Effort
CAC Elite (and Serge) 80 Overrated 81

The A Draft Fall 2011 season came to a close Monday night as Overrated took on top seeded CAC Elite (and Serge) in the title game. After a thrilling double OT win against TMK last week, CAC Elite headed into the title bout without one of their key cogs, John Carpin. I wondered how it would impact the game and anyone who was there would tell you it had a huge impact since Bells and Serge had to play big minutes.

Overrated was the hungrier team early as they jumped out to a 7-0 run. Kerr hit some tough shots in the lane and Ollquist looked to be on point on both ends of the floor. CAC Elite has struggled to get it going early in games all season and tonight was no different.

As they have done all season though Elite stuck to their game plan and fought back. Ouellette hit two threes and Vladi hit one making this a tight game in a matter of a couple of minutes. Elite can score in a hurry with their potent offense and they showed me why they were the team to beat all season.

Both teams looked very good overall on offense. It’s not that the defense was bad it was more the fact that everyone was hitting everything! Let me rephrase actually. Everyone played solid defense except Terry. For some reason Terry kept running down the floor and planting himself under the rim leaving Kerr for wide open threes. He started to hit them and these uncontested looks really hurt Elite.

Ouellette was really on fire though starting 4 of 5 from deep as we had a tie game at 26 with 11 minutes to go. The 3 point shooting for both teams was ridiculous overall in the game and the sharp shooting really cancelled out. Overrated and Elite traded buckets for a while until the 8 minute mark in the first half when Elite was able to grab their first lead on a Terry layup.

Kerr went to the pine at this point with his 3rd foul and Elite made their run without the big fella in the paint. Vladi and Terry hit some tough shots and we had a 5 point lead for Elite which was huge in this game. Dorey and Ollquist were there to each hit a 3 though and prevent the game from getting out of hand with Kerr on the bench. At the break we had a tie game at 43 and the hype leading up to this one did not disappoint.

CAC Elite did a nice job of overcoming their tough start as they were able to grind and scratch their way to a 5 point lead 5 minutes into the 2nd frame. I wondered to myself if Dorey would take this one over in the 2nd half since he had done so all season. He did in fact rise to the challenge.

Dorey hit a couple of DEEP threes and a nice little scoop layup along the baseline to keep OR in it after Elite was able to grab a 7 point lead. I credit Dorey for keeping his guys in the game when it looked like the game was getting out of hand. He had help from Ollquist who played a terrific and efficient game (8 assists, 0 TOs) as OR was able to go on a run to take a 2 point lead to answer the Elite onslaught.

Part of this run was the Kerr long ball. Terry gave him PLETNY of room and Kerr made him pay hitting 2 long ones and giving OR a 5 point lead as time wound down. OR had all the momentum and I thought the game was over. That was until Bells stole an OR inbounds pass and found Vladi who hit a tough layup. One possession later (thinking back on it I think the 3 came first, but you get the idea) Vladi knocked down a huge 3 capping off his personal 5-0 run. Elite was down 1 with 4 minutes to go and we were in for a great finish.

After the Vladi run, Dorey it a huge 3 to give OR some breathing room but Vladi was there to answer with one of his own. Wow the 3 point shooting in this one. Both teams came to play and hit some seriously clutch trifectas.

With under 2 minutes to play Fincke hit a tough layup to give OR a 1 point lead. Elite faltered on their next possession and it was foul time. Ollquist went to he line but Fincke made a crucial error, jumping in the lane before the FT resulting in a violation. With under a minute to play and down 1 Elite had the ball with a chance to take the lead. Vladi drove the lane and threw the ball away! The pass was intended for Matty so it’s questionable as to whether or not he would have done anything with it anyways, but the ball went to OR nonetheless. Dorey MISSED the 1 and 1 and Elite had one more life. I forget who took the shot, but someone missed wide and after a scrum for the ball OR knocked it out of bounds (Bells actually hit it out but Rilwan gave it to Elite) and Elite had one more shot with 2 seconds left. Vladi got a GREAT look at a deep three, which sailed wide as OR escaped with the title!

This was a great game from start to finish and OR should be credited for grinding out the tough 1 point win. I should note that Dan Ollquist was the MVP of the game. You might be asking why Ollquist since I hardly mentioned him in the write up but the bottom line is he was great in this game. He had a modest 17 point, 8 assist stat line but he virtually played a flawless game. Ollquist had 0 turnovers running the point and really hit some huge shots in this one. Kerr and Dorey had monster games as always but Ollquist was that extra spark OR needed to grab the title. Congrats to Ollquist and OR.

For CAC Elite I imagine this one will leave a bad taste in their mouth just as my 1/13 performance the week before did for me. It’s not all for not though. Elite had a great season and was the best team throughout except for the title game. I am sure they are wondering what went wrong, but really this game came down to one possession and could have gone either way.

Thanks to all for a great season. I won’t be back as your commish but I will still be playing in A Draft. Looking forward to getting back after that elusive title in 2013!
