Spring 2006: A1 League Champs: Junior Mafia

Mafia capture A1 title in most exhilirating waySartori takes home MVP
The Haters 74 Junior Mafia 78

Oh my goodness, for those that did not attend this championship game, shame on you, because you missed quite the epic battle.  The brick was on the line and both teams could taste it.  Early on, it was like watching two countries bomb the crap out of each other as both teams were letting the 3 fly.  What more could I ask for as a spectator, both stars lifted their teams to another level.  For the Haters, Alex Delpleche (38pts) was the heart and soul of the Hater early lead.  On the other side of the court, the game's MVP, Jay Sartori, the born gamer, ended up with a game high 39 points on 7 3's.  6 of which looked like he borrowed Cheese's canoe on the Charles to shoot them from.  But seriously, no matter which team won, Al or Jay was going to get the MVP with the spectacular way in which they played.  At the half, the Haters had a 1 point edge.  In the second half, the supporting cast got in the mix.  JM's Ian Tosti put on a shooting clinic (20pts), bombing away himself, just like his team mate.  Not to be out done, Mike Kaup (20pts) hit some even bigger 3's to answer Ian and Jay's.  Seriously, every time a team made a five point run, the other team would answer with six points.  At times, the crowd up on the balcony was going bonkers.  With each momentum swing I was getting so excited that the Commish almost had to put me on time out because I was so amped up at the elevated play.  Soon, the big men started going at it.  All game, Tibbs (16pts) and Gary (13pts) battled with each other, beating one another up.  Eventually, JM ended up with a 3 point lead with a minute left to go.  Twice, JM went to the line to ice the game for 1 and 1, but failed to convert on the front ends.  However, the Haters couldn't counter.  Eventually, Ian Tosti's free throw with 1.5 seconds left to go iced the game and got Tibbs his first brick ever at CRFC.  Tibbs, your cherry has been officially been popped, welcome to manhood.

Long goes in clean, but comes out Dirty

Without Ramon, Dirty needed to have a massive game, just as I wrote in the pre-game spreads.  Not only did Dirty blow up for a week high 39 points, the boys from JJ & OGD made easy work of Bingo with out the Greaser.  At times, Bingo made things interesting.  Kurt (22pts) and the Preacher (26pts) scattered their points throughout the game, while Maverik snuck in a hard earned double double (13pts).  There was just nothing anyone could do to stop the Dirty one who continued to filthify (i coined a word) the Long Defense.  Tim Brady had no problems, in between watching Dirty, to throw in his own double double (12pts).  And to answer everyone's question as to which Turin would show up, it would be none of the above.  Luckily for JJ & OGD, Eric Hinton was a more than suitable substitute for Mike.

Ruffians forgot to play second half in Mafia victory

I have seen some strange things in my day and this game had to be one of them.  The first half was a hard fought battle between the two teams.  After the early blood spilling that resulted in stitches for Neild and Machado on an unintentional head-2-chin shot, the Ruffians were right in it.  Cheese (14pts), Roache (13pts) and Meldrim were all clicking, finding every hole in the Mafia D.  In fact, the Ruffians would have had a 3 point lead if Ian Tosti (19pts) didnt drain one of his 5 3's to end the half and tie the game.  Once the second half started, it was a completely different game.  This weeks BGood Player of the Week, Jay Sartori, exploded in the second half, scoring 24 of his 34 points.  Even though Sartori was going loco with the scoring, he didn't start until Tibbs (18pts) finally found his touch in the second half.  All of a sudden, Tibbs, Jay and Ian couldnt miss and i blinked to find out that JM had taken a 20 point lead.  I was looking to Dave-Mac to see if Ian hit one of those MTV 10 point shots or something because the lead came about all of a sudden.  In all, JM took care of their business and blasted the Ruffians in their second half fury.

The Haters 62  The Window Shoppers 65

Shoppers pull off victory will skeleton squad, but win goes to Hater

With Tibbs and Raj helping out so the Shoppers could field a team, the show went on to give Al and the Haters a game.  It turned out to be the only game that wasn't decided by double digits all night.  Early on, with Al showing up fashionably late, Mike Kaup flashed some game of old by dropping a season high 22 points on yours truly to give the Haters an Early lead.  For the Shoppers, Tibbs was doing all he could to help out, especially with his game high 30 points over Gary and the fashionably late Al.  The Shoppers clung to a one point at the half, but their lead only grew with John Edwards timely passing and post points (12pts).  As time dwindled down, the Haters fell asleep, almost literally.  Once the clock was under two minutes, the Shoppers managed the clock to perfection, making sure they scored and the clock never stopped.  Eventually, with a 5 point lead, the Shoppers were back on defense, watching the time tick.  With about 15 seconds left to go, the Haters hit a bucket, but rushed back on defense.  The Shoppers inbounded and held the ball.  The Haters didnt remember to foul until there was 5 seconds left on the clock.  By that time, the Shoppers played hot potatoe and kept the ball moving, not allowing the Haters to foul, thus letting the clock run out to win the game.
