Spring 2006: A1 League Champs: Junior Mafia

Mafia capture A1 title in most exhilirating waySartori takes home MVP

Oh my goodness, for those that did not attend this championship game, shame on you, because you missed quite the epic battle.  The brick was on the line and both teams could taste it.  Early on, it was like watching two countries bomb the crap out of each other as both teams were letting the 3 fly.  What more could I ask for as a spectator, both stars lifted their teams to another level.  For the Haters, Alex Delpleche (38pts) was the heart and soul of the Hater early lead.  On the other side of the court, the game's MVP, Jay Sartori, the born gamer, ended up with a game high 39 points on 7 3's.  6 of which looked like he borrowed Cheese's canoe on the Charles to shoot them from.  But seriously, no matter which team won, Al or Jay was going to get the MVP with the spectacular way in which they played.  At the half, the Haters had a 1 point edge.  In the second half, the supporting cast got in the mix.  JM's Ian Tosti put on a shooting clinic (20pts), bombing away himself, just like his team mate.  Not to be out done, Mike Kaup (20pts) hit some even bigger 3's to answer Ian and Jay's.  Seriously, every time a team made a five point run, the other team would answer with six points.  At times, the crowd up on the balcony was going bonkers.  With each momentum swing I was getting so excited that the Commish almost had to put me on time out because I was so amped up at the elevated play.  Soon, the big men started going at it.  All game, Tibbs (16pts) and Gary (13pts) battled with each other, beating one another up.  Eventually, JM ended up with a 3 point lead with a minute left to go.  Twice, JM went to the line to ice the game for 1 and 1, but failed to convert on the front ends.  However, the Haters couldn't counter.  Eventually, Ian Tosti's free throw with 1.5 seconds left to go iced the game and got Tibbs his first brick ever at CRFC.  Tibbs, your cherry has been officially been popped, welcome to manhood.

    Bow Down To Machado

In a game with superstars missing, its always tough to keep my attention from drifting over to the girls on the elliptical machines, but luckily, Chris Machado put on a show.  In the first half, the Haters struggled to get any offense going.  Despite his team high 33 points, Gary Fisher was being played very well by Tibbs.  With the defense there, Junior Mafia's offense fed off the intensity.  Chris Machado blew up for a whopping 40 points in Satori's absence, creating a roucus upstairs in the balcony every time he touched the ball.  With his week high 40 points and charasmatic style, Chris is this weeks BGood Player of the week.  Chris got a lot of help on offense from Tibbs (15pts) and Ian Tosti (14pts), while Ian Olmstead owned the boards.  Without Al and Kaup, the Haters were without their biggest gun, but Serge (9pts) and Mike Louca (10pts) tried to do all they could to help Gary out with the scoring while Brett Leary opened up a ton of shots for everyone.  It was Chris Machado's night and I doubt Artest himself couldn't stick him...Well, maybe Tracy McGrady couldn't.

Despite Being on the DL, Ramon Still Dominates

JJ&OGD got their revenge on me for ranking them last as they put the whoopin stick to my backside on the court, not to mention I played my worst game thus far.  Early on, it looked as though JJ&OGD would run away with the game.  Ramon (25pts) was sticking his jay, despite the fact that I thought I played good D and Tim Brady absolutely killed the WindowShoppers in the paint (16pts 8rebs).  Luckily, the WindowShoppers woke up in the begining of the second half.  Matt West (12pts 12rebs) and Slobodan (10pts 10rebs) started dominating the glass, while John Edwards (15pts) managed to hit some key shots.  The WS got as close to 6 when JJ&OGD decided to quit playing around and go for the jugular.  Dirty (17pts) started hitting tough shots over Edwards, while Turin (5off reb) was killing the WS with second chance shots.  JJ&OGD just outplayed and outworked the WS en route to their second win of the season.

Ruffians Get First W of the Season

The Ruffians are officially in the win column, after an impressive victory over Bingo Long.  In the first half, Bingo held a slight lead beind, Keith "Preacher" Thompson's 24pts and Maverick Howe's scrappy defense (4stls).  As time dwindled down in the half, with jonathan Lewis controlling the glass (10rebs off the bench), Cheese (17pts) headed a run that had the Ruffians up 3 at the break.  They never looked back from this point.  Jim Meldrim (13PTS) and Mike Roache (12pts) had no problem helping Cheese out on the offensive end, while Neild Montgomery finally looked like the player of old as he dropped 14pts to go with his 13 rebounds.  For Bingo Long, Dave Kichen (13pts) did all he could in the second half, but they just couldnt close the gap.
