Spring 2006: A1 League Champs: Junior Mafia

Mafia capture A1 title in most exhilirating waySartori takes home MVP
The Haters 74 Junior Mafia 78

Oh my goodness, for those that did not attend this championship game, shame on you, because you missed quite the epic battle.  The brick was on the line and both teams could taste it.  Early on, it was like watching two countries bomb the crap out of each other as both teams were letting the 3 fly.  What more could I ask for as a spectator, both stars lifted their teams to another level.  For the Haters, Alex Delpleche (38pts) was the heart and soul of the Hater early lead.  On the other side of the court, the game's MVP, Jay Sartori, the born gamer, ended up with a game high 39 points on 7 3's.  6 of which looked like he borrowed Cheese's canoe on the Charles to shoot them from.  But seriously, no matter which team won, Al or Jay was going to get the MVP with the spectacular way in which they played.  At the half, the Haters had a 1 point edge.  In the second half, the supporting cast got in the mix.  JM's Ian Tosti put on a shooting clinic (20pts), bombing away himself, just like his team mate.  Not to be out done, Mike Kaup (20pts) hit some even bigger 3's to answer Ian and Jay's.  Seriously, every time a team made a five point run, the other team would answer with six points.  At times, the crowd up on the balcony was going bonkers.  With each momentum swing I was getting so excited that the Commish almost had to put me on time out because I was so amped up at the elevated play.  Soon, the big men started going at it.  All game, Tibbs (16pts) and Gary (13pts) battled with each other, beating one another up.  Eventually, JM ended up with a 3 point lead with a minute left to go.  Twice, JM went to the line to ice the game for 1 and 1, but failed to convert on the front ends.  However, the Haters couldn't counter.  Eventually, Ian Tosti's free throw with 1.5 seconds left to go iced the game and got Tibbs his first brick ever at CRFC.  Tibbs, your cherry has been officially been popped, welcome to manhood.

Ramon plays like the Pine St Inn and hands out 17 dimes in JJ & OGD win

Jim Jack and  OGD dismantled the struggling Ruffians last night.  The entire game belonged to JJ & OGD, with Ramon running the point like Steve Nash.  He shattered the assist record of 14, by dishing out 17.  I dont know about anyone else, but if you dropped 17 dimes on the streets, that'd make you a grade A snitch.  Luckily, Mon did it in the CRFC cage, which gave him the single game assist record with 17, but he could have had at least 20+.  One reason for all his dimes was the lethal shooting of Dirty, who dropped 30 points, which included 6 bombs.  Tim Brady threw in his customary double double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.  For the Ruffians, Roache continued to shoot the ball well, dropping 6 3's of his own, while Jonathan Lewis handled the dirty work by creating 4 steals and grabbing 8 boards.  Without Cheese, the Ruffians needed Dart to step up off the bench and produce against a tough defensive team and my man, the IceMan, reminiscent of George Gervin, had 3 thefts to go with his 13 points, finger rolling each bucket with ease.  Neild Montgomery poured in 19, helping out a hobbling Jim Meldrim, who continues to be affected by injuries.  The second half was the same as the first as JJ & OGD kept scoring.  Mike Turin had his best game of the season, dropping 24 points (12rebs), while being the key defender by stuffing 5 shots and snatching 2 steals.  With about a minute left to go, Dave Mac had to stop the game because the 3rd sign of the Apocolypse occured when Turin banked a free throw in, then hit a 3 pointer.  Dave Mac rushed home to put his fam in the bomb shelter just to be on the safe side before returning back to ref the other games.

Stirring the Pot: Ramon, Les continue to heckle Al for being a hun from balcony in Hater Victory

Haters squeaked by Bingo Long, despite constant harassment from the balcony.  Al Smooth's play has caught some static from the peanut gallery.  I'll play devil's advocate on both sides, Al people are just jealous of your game on and off the court/ You did shoot a shot from the CRFC logo.  There it's out there for all you gossipers to dwell on.  Back to the game, the Haters came out strong, building a 10 point lead behind Al, who despite all the criticism from the balcony, dropped a game high 28 points.  By the end of the half, Bingo cut the lead to 4 behind a sensational effort from the Preacher, Keith Thompson.  Keith scored a team high 22 points on one of the toughest defenders in the league, Gary Fisher.  With Keith playing as well as he was, on anyone else, he definately would have had 35 easy, but Gary plays both ends of the floor equally hard.  Although he scored 16 points, Gary made the difference in the game on the other end of the court.  With 7 blocks and 4 steals, Gary took away a possible 22 points from Bingo Long, thus earning him BGood Player of the Week.  In the second half, the Hater D was holding down the Long offense long enough for Mike Kaup to score 12. primarilu from getting fouled and shooting from the line.  With lead back to double digits, Bingo needed to make a run.  Kurt (17pts) and The Un-Greaser, Dave Kichen (12pts) started helping the Preacher out.  Kurt kept hitting his open turn around, while Kichen kept converting on free throws.  Unfortunately, the Haters didnt let them get closer than 3, and took home the victory.

Everyone hates when you're at the top Al, just block 'em out

Tibbs leads Mafia to sweap Shoppers in season series

JM was able to handle the Shoppers last night, keeping their first place seed in safe.  By the end of the first half, JM accumulated an 8 point lead behind Captain Tibbs.  Tibbs brought the A-game, scoring a team high 22 on West, which is a feat in amongst itself.  Sartori, who pulled a Mirabelli and got dressed as his girl drove him in from the airport, didnt leave his shot in Florida as he didnt show any flight fatigue by dropping 21, but did show quite a nasty sun burn from the sensational weather down there.  The Shoppers spread the scoring out quite nicely.  West lead the team with 14, while Slobs and Edwards scored 10 a piece, while the newly acquire Tim Gaspar dropped 11.  In the second half, the Shoppers started to make a run, when Slobs went down with an ankle injury.  He wouldnt return.  The second half belonged to the Macho Man, Chris Machado who stopped the bleeding on two occasions for JM.  The first is when the Shoppers score 7 unanswered, only to have Chris drop a shooters roll 3 on them.  As JM rebuilt the lead, again, the Shoppers chopped away, only to have Machado throw an AND 1 down on yours truly.  JM never looked back as they played the clock to perfection en route to their second straight win.
