Fall 2007: A1 League Champs: Real & Spectacular

Majical Run Real Spectacular Take the Brick
    Real & Spectacular 75 Dukes 66

Despite being the lower seed and finishing the regular season just a game above .500, Real & Spectacular came into the game as a heavy favorite because of the absence of Danny Salazar for the Dukes.  Had Mike Laptewicz (5 points, 8 assists) not been shaving points (missed a late free throw), R&S would have covered their spread.  Instead, they'll gladly settle for winning the A1 Fall 2007 Brick and cleaning out my Christmas Fund Account.  If this really was the Rattling AK's swan song in the A1, then there was no better way to go out.  Despite only inserting himself into the action for less than a minute, AK was making great adjustments on the sidelines, motivating his guys and getting them to play as a cohesive unit.

With the Dukes defense, namely the Preacher (25 points, 8 boards), keyed in on slowing down the Majic Man (28 points, 19 boards), OG (25 points, 5 assists) was getting the benefit of good looks.  Coming off a stressful week, in which he could have missed the game if his wife hadn't given birth to their second child before the weekend (congrats!), Orin was focused and on fire when he got his opportunities.  He didn't need a lot of shots to get to his 25 points, and for his heady play on both ends of the floor, he was this season's Finals MVP.  A well deserved honor, and not bad for an A1 Rook.  Bosko (10 points, 9 boards) and Superboy (8 points, 8 boards) provided the muscle down low and just the hard edge that Real & Spectacular needed to win this game.  Nothing wrong with playing hard and making sure your presence is felt.

With the Dukes offense sputtering without Salazar, Matt Wolfe (19 points, 14 boards) stepped up in a big way.  Prior to the game, I saw a copy of Salazar's email to his team, and I could tell that Matt was a little offended that his shooting wasn't mentioned as a key to the game.  With the Preacher getting to the rack at will and leading the way, Wolfe was left open for his patented 12 foot, "I don't need no stinken' backboard" baseline J, and it was falling.  Trevor, aka Ferarri F 50%  (see: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ferrari+f-50), was struggling from downtown, shooting just 3-20 from the land of beyond.  But he took enough shots to get to 19 points and keep his team in contention.  Unfortunately for him, the Majic Man ended up winning that mano-a-mano battle from outside (8-19) and hit 3 straight in the second half to turn a close game into a double digit affair.  Unlike the Dukes, Real & Spectacular was able to hit their free throws down the stretch (minus Lappy skimming off the top) and secure their Brick.  Congrats guys, and we'll see you next season!
