Spring 2010: A1 League Champs: Doin’ Work

    Workin into the Second Round

The nightcap was a bruiser of a game, and I expected nothing less. PGB needs a low scoring affair to pull games out and with SuperBoy bumping bodies, things get ugly.  AB and BDubs aren't exactly going to back down from a physical challenge (unlike, say, me) so were answering in kind.

The grueling pace of the game was doing nothing to keep me awake.  I made these late times for you people in the playoffs so there'd be no 'oh the game is too early our whole team can't get there" complaining, and this is how you repay me? Ungrateful!

Every time PGB ws thinking they were going to make their move, disaster struck. Whether it was DRuff getting hot (for what seems like the first time this season), Davenport forcing a couple turnovers or Durbrow slicing through the entire D for a seemingly easy bucket, they could never just put it together despite how much they tried.

You'll note, at least Kahana will, that this is the only write-up I did out of order, and I just wanted to make him a little more impatient for his own.

Anyway - sign up for next season already!

    Grabbing First by the Scrot

Did his teammates just lock up the MVP for Tommy Kahana?!?! Without him for the second time against PGB, the Scrotacoats got a season's best effort from Mike Kuzdeba to hold off a motivated PGB, who were allowed to have Kap fill in.

Now the case for tommy because interesting. He played in 7 games, accounted for 61% of his team's total offense, and shockingly did NOT kill them on the defensive end, they were second in the league allowing only 62.11 ppg.  That's doin work right there!

In this game, SMul got to guard Dorey and man, did he hassle him into a frustrating night. 6 points?!? When doe sthat EVER happen. I'm going to take the lead from Kaplan (that will NEVER happen again, I promise) in the B1 East and just name the DPoY award after Scott so I can give it to someone else. Not that anyone else in the league plays D, but I've got to spread the wealth . I'm just going to start calling Scott DeePoY (yes, pronouce it just like it sounds, if we can call tommy 'roy' we can call scott a DeePoY!)

So is Tommy an MVP?!?! Find out on Monday morning when the Awards are announced as well as the playoff preview and lines!

Up In Smoke Nabs 3 Seed

Up In Smoke finished the season on a two game winning streak to shock A1 and grab the # 3 seed heading into the playoffs.  No one expected that 3 weeks ago after they dropped a game to PGB and were sitting at 3-4.  Looks like my jinx of Chris Kerr is finally over.  Sure it might not get him back into the MVP race (awards announced on Wednesday!) but it did help his team put themselves in a great position to make a run at the Brick!

With a dominant first half, Smoke led 38-19.  BFrat was going bananas, hitting some absurd layups and even a 3 (!!).  Kerr was his usual dominant self in the paint, overwhelming the jumpman at every turn.  That's really why Terry wanted SMul to fill in, so he could be lazy on D and not guard Kerr.  But Jono's buddy showed up right after tip to get into the mix.  Someone make sure he gets into A1 next seaosn!

In the second half it was just a matter of hanging on.  Sure Lau sorta kinda made this thing a game, but the final score is much closer than this game was.  With Dan Mac going off, and TSpin dominating the boards, this is the kind of performance Smoke has been looking for. They don't score a ton of poitns, and that could be a problem against the Wolfpack next week, but if they focus on D, anything could happen!

Meltdown: Fish Business Out of Postseason

CACers - It's that time of the season.  Check out the Fall 2010 Info and the 3v3 Info for August 14th/15th!  Send me an email at CACBasketball@Gmail.com to hold your spot or ask any questions.

Ok, so it wasn't so much a team meltdown, as a personal one.  In a tight game, with the playoffs on the line, guess who decided to get his first T of the season. This guy! Yea, what a way to go out, 4 shots and possession as EMR pushed a 4 point advantage to 9 in one fell swoop.  From there, it was just a matter of hitting a couple more free throws, which they did a good job of doing all game, and coasting to the finish line.

Until that point last in the second half, this thing was a tight ball game.  With Fish Business fighting for their playoff lives.  O'Cal stepped his game up, finding his 3 point stroke, while the Ghost was knocking down the mid range.

But without any subs, and at a serious height disadvantage, it was only a matter of time before the Business wore down.  The Hitman made things look so easy in the post.  Man I wish I could hit a lay-up half as difficult as the ones he hit in this game.  Majic was flirting with a triple double.  See what happens when you only launch 7 3s and none of them are from ludacris ranges like half court?! I mean, I wouldn't have been surprised if you hit them, but still, points can be easy to comeby!

With the win, EMR slips into the # 5 seed and will take on the Step Daddies in the first round of the playoffs.  Yes I'm ignoring Kap's contributions, why do you ask?!  Earlier in the season, the Daddies won an epic 99-91 shootout and I expect more of the same fireworks next week, do NOT disappoint me people!

    Ash Slides in Playoffs Backdoor

CACers - It's that time of the season.  Check out the Fall 2010 Info and the 3v3 Info for August 14th/15th!  Send me an email at CACBasketball@Gmail.com to hold your spot or ask any questions.

With Fish Business losing the previous game, Kiss My Volcanic Ash knew they were in the playoffs no matter the outcome of their own game.  That didn't stop them from racing out to a 13-0 and 27-10 lead in this one.  Cheese was hitting tough shots, Vladi added a couple 3s and Osgood, well he always makes scoring look so easy.  THe league's highest rated player only increased his margin over the final week of the regular season with a redonkulous 40/20 night. But that doesn't mean much when your squad self-implodes!

Round that 27-10 mark, Lanfear showedup for the Wolfpack and slowly started to help turn the game around for them.  Correction, he did it viciously and quickly.  As he was bombing 3s and creating turnovers, Hall was pounding the paint and the Big Ticket was cleaning up any stray messes left behind.  Their deficit at the break was a mere 3 points.  No problem, considering the 7-0 run to start the second half.

For a while it looked like a contest between Chanel and Vladi over who would miss more 3s (Vlad won) but in the second half, Chanel started dropping dimes getting his teammates easy looks.  He played ah ell of a balanced game and was one of the many reasons Wolfpack got back in this thing.

As Ash's D crumbled, so did the O.  Everyone stopped moving and whoever had the ball at any given moment ended up shooting it. Not a pretty sight to watch.

With Mario scoring 8 straight poitns at one time, and Hall continuing his dominance, Wolfpack led by as many as 15 in teh second half.  That's what's going to make them so dangerous. They can score points so quickly and effeciently, they don't care if you seem poised to throw a knockout punch. They're going to bounce back from your heymaker.  When they take on Up In Smoke Tour next week in the playoffs, they'll need everyone in attendance and ready to go from the opening tip! You never want to fall behind 15-0 in the playoffs!
