Winter 2007: A1 League Champs: Warriors Code

Warriors Code Takes the Brick Filosa MVP
Warriors Code 82 Evil Petting Zoo 72

On a night when Kareem Benjamin was sitting on the sidelines (elbow), Evil Petting Zoo knew someone needed to step up to keep this game even close.  The pre-game line for them was (+21) and that may have added a little motivation.  Kenny Rivera (20 points) stepped up in a big way, leading EPZ with 18 first half points.  They didn't just keep the game close, but they led for most of the opening frame.  The crowd was behind them, and they looked like they'd be poised to make a "Miracle on the Hardwood" run in the second half.

But the Wolverine (28 points, 18 boards) would not be denied the Brick.  A quick 3 point play before the half tied the game at 37, and he rallied the troups to start the second half.  A decisive 14-2 run opened the game up and cemented Filosa's MVP award.  Don't think this MVP award is some staff conspiracy, or a ploy to try and get more calls (although it wouldn't hurt).  The Wolverine earned it in the paint, getting 7 offensive boards for a total of 10 second chance points.  Ian Tosti (18 points) and the Born Gamer, JaySar (25 points), both shot themselves back into the game and turned in strong second half performance, building the lead to as many as 18.  It looked to be the end for EPZ, but Sweens (23 points, 9 boards) and Gary (18 points) kept playing hard.  Behind the duo, the score was trimmed to just 7 with 2 minutes to go.  But in a game that saw a combined 50 free throws, Warriors Code hit enough down the stretch to keep the game in hand.

Another great A1 season comes to a close and congrats on both teams for great seasons.  Now the question remains, can the Wolverine repeat with another squad?  Will other superstars rise up to claim their first Brick?  Who will be the next star to rise from the unkowns?  All this and more will be decided in the Summer A1 Season!

Second half run helps 7AM cruise to victoty over EPZ.

It was tough to predict how this game was going to play out as both teams were missing their 1st round picks (Special K & The Real Diehl), but the games must go on and we decided to play it anyway.  Early on for 7AM Ian Urqhart (23 pts, 9 rebs, 6 asts) showed off his patented shooting touch that has garnered him so much consideration for Rookie of the Year.  But EPZ countered with Matty O (9 pts, 9 asts) from the outside and Gary Fisher (19 pts, TWENTY rebounds) on the inside but found themselves down 3 at the break.  EPZ went on a mini-run tying the score at 36 but then 7AM blew the game wide open.  Behind the guard play of OíCal (14 pts, 8 asts) and Roger Lau (24 pts), 7AM was running and finishing at will and before EPZ could react had run off 14 consecutive points.  Some late scoring from AK 47 (20 pts) made it somewhat interesting but 7AMs lead was never truly in question in this one.  7AM halts their losing streak at 3 while EPZ slide continues (3 straight losses) as they have to start worrying about qualifying for the playoffs.

Warriors Code escapes in OT against the Ruffians

The Ruffians were looking for an improbable second straight win against the Warriors Code missing JaySar.  The Gallagher brother battle was a dousy, with Jason scoring 33 points, including the game winning basket, while Derek put in 32 and 19 in another phenominal effort.  At the trail end of regulation, the Ruffians were ahead 1 with 30 seconds to go, but could only hit 2 out of 4 free throws to give WC a shot.  Who else to hit a clutch three but the man with no conscious, Ian Tosti (25 points).  Despite struggling at times earlier in the game, Ian never is one to be gun shy, and as soon as it was released, the crowd knew it was going in.  With OT forced, the wind seemed to come out of the Ruffians sails.  Just to get to that point, Yavor Nechev (24 points) scored his team's last 8 points on his own.  Roache had tossed in 16 while Cheese added 9 and 8 assists.

But in OT, Matt Filosa (14 points, 21 rebounds) and Jason Gallagher took over, scoring the rest of the team's points.  Usok (9 points) and Kevin Walsh (6 points, 11 boards) had also helped the Warriors Code get to that point and stay in first place.  But with a number of teams still nipping at their heels, they're going to have to win out if they want to keep that top seed for the playoffs.

Al Smooth Proves his point, Get's Regular Season Match against DitT

Al Smooth, still insisting that the Pisces won't lose again, got his team another tough victory along with the help of his teammates.  Al's 43 points and 20 boards sent a resounding statement through the rest of the league that his boys aren't to be messed with.  Tommy K added 18 quiet points, but wasn't quiet down the stretch.  After DitT cut a 14 point lead to just 1 with a couple minutes to go, the reigning RoY calmly trotted down the court to nail a half court three that put the game away for good.  Nip Jethi (16 points 9 rebounds) had another fine performance, knocking down the mid range jumper and Tim Began (6 points, 6 assists) added his as well.  For Drunk, the late comeback wasn't quite enough to get the win.  K.O. led the way with 22 points despite being frustrated and harassed by motivated defenders all night.  Tibbs (21 points, 15 boards) couldn't do enough to counteract, or even slow down, his Smoothness.  Paul Z added 18 while Phi Slamma Jamma added 17 and his usual 3 blocks.

The Pisces, winners of 5 straight, have moved into sole possession of second place and will look to solidify that with a win against P-Town.  Maybe they'll even be favored, who knows.  Drunk will look to rebound against Cousin Gilbert.

GP 's Double Double makes quick work of Cousin Gilbert

GP wouldn't, and couldn't, miss in the early going as he poured in 33 total points in a solid overall effort against Cousin Gilbert.  Flanked by Herman and Brady (11 points each) there was no stopping the Shroud of Turin on this night.  If only one of their top two picks shows up, they will be really tough to beat come playoff time.  Espeically with Hinton (6 points, 12 boards, 8 assists) and Edwards filling their roles.  GP's role is to score, and he knows it.  Dropping 7 3's and making it look easy, Shroud of Turin is right back on track.

For Cousin Gilbert, things were still managable until the Hitman (21 points) went down early in the second half.  Without a go to scorer, the offense slowed down.  Supe the Chemist dropped 18 points, 7 boards, gave it everything he had.  Turin, 6 points, and Kevy Kevy 5 points, each added their own spark to the offense.  CG gets Drunkin the Trunk in the night cap on Monday night, while Shroud takes on Warrior's Code in an effort to close the gap on first place.

Gang Green makes easy work of Forfeit Win

With just Serge in attendance, Gang Green ran a scrimmage against Serge, Tibbs, Edwards and Hinton.  With the win already in hand, the exhibition was a good way to let off some steam for Gang Green.  Everybody broke double digits and the trash talk abound.  Serge (22 points) made sure to pad his stats as much as possible, knowing that his were the only ones that counted on his squad.  Good thing we fed him the ball!  Gang Green takes on the Ruffians Sunday night while Smooth This will face EPZ
