Spring 2005: A2 League Champs: UCC

    UCC 69 Stackpole 60

This was the most physical game I have seen UCC play yet this season. They dominated the first half, as their physical style was controlling the tempo of the game. They had Stackpole airballing shots left and right. And holding the Chise to 8 points in a half usually means you got 5 people out there defending. UCCís offense was supplied by Rogelio (21pts) or 508 I would like to call him. My man was lights out not from behind the three point line, but from a different zip code. Along with 508, the D-Mac wasnít sitting well in Stackpoleís stomach as McClaren dropped 19 points. There D and potent offense had UCC up 15 at the half. To Stackpoleís credit, they came out ready to ball. Finally, the Chise got going as he finished with 22. Then Chris Toglia shook off the early airballs (including some from the free throw line) and started hittiní the jay. Stackpole got the lead down to 5, when the controversy started. There was a call that UCCís Rogelio and Stackpolís Chris Toglia did not agree on, they had some words. Then with after a trip down the court, with 2 minutes left to play they went at it. I mean they really went at it, blows were thrown, bows were dropped and I though I saw Hogan throw down a Leg drop off the ropes. Both players were ejected and the game ensued, but the game was already over as UCC would not relinquish the lead. (Both players will be subject to fines and suspensions by the Commish and Hoganís gym membership was suspended one month.)

Old Dirty Bastards 51  Stackpole 69

The Stackpole took it right to the ODBís last night, with some impressive defense that set the tone for the whole game. The game began and ended with out Stackpole stud Chris McMahon, yet the Pole never lost a step.Chris Toglia came out shooting Manson insane from behind the 3 point line.My man Togs scorched the ODBís for 31 on 6 three points. The ODBís kept it reasonable in the first half due to the play Mike Foley.Foley scored 14 of his 18 points in the first 18 minutes of this contest. Then the Pole stepped up their D and started to dominate the pace of the game.Togs, Chris Hunter (5pts 5rebs 5 asst) and Mark Nazzaro (12pts 4asst) started acting like cleptos by stealing everything in sight.I even recommended to Dan Herman, who a good night from the floor (14pts), that instead of shooting the ball on offense they should try to nail the ball to the floor so Stackpole wouldnít run away with it (combined 12 steals).Give all the credit to the powerful Stackpole team as they played tremendous D to defeat the ODB team.

All turnovers and no hit shots makes Sean a dull player.UCC was just too tough as we struggled all night to stop their potent offensive attack. This game started out with UCC abusing Redrum on the inside.James Brown just deebowed (bullied) the interior D with his massive frame, dropping 25 points like he was playing on a fisher price hoop.Redrum showed signs of life when Danny OíDonnell (14pts) continued to take Kevy Kev to the rack. Then we got acquainted with UCCís Rogelio Stevens.Rogelio was bombing 3ís from half court, he was driving, all to score his 30 points. The second half began with a UCC 4 point lead when D-Mac (18pts) and Kevy (6asst 13 pts) started to run the table on every missed RedRum shot.We were cut and Steve Bruger (23pts) and the Surgeon (8pts) tried to stop the bleeding, but it was to late as Redrum flatlined and lost another double digit game.

This was one of the best regular season games CRFC basketball has seen in recent years, and certainly was the best game in the new A2 league's young history.  Both teams were neck and neck virtually the entire game.  Evans gave an impressive effort without starting point guard Brian Skerry & Chris O'Donnell.  They has a balanced attack led by A2's leading scorer Jay Satori (27 Pts).  The human block machine Steve O'Connell, who was coming off a CRFC Basketball league record 12 blocks in week 1, had 23 points and only 2 blocks this time.  Newcomer Shane O'Donnell had a nice game with 16 points, & 13 boards.  I was told by an "inside" Saugus source: "when Shane was in shape he was a great player, he really could play."  This very same source (who happened to be reffing the game) also made fun of how tight Shane's #21 jersey was.  Also, team captain Mike Dinarian had 10 pts & 7 rebs for Evans

Cambridge Medical got another great game from Center Brian Scuffenbil (27 pts).  PG Kenny Bascomb had 16 pts, Jim McCarthy had 15 & Jim Murray played his best game at CRFC 15 pts & 6 boards.  Jermaine Baynes showed up in the second half after a rough Friday night, but shook off the booze and contributed 7 pts with solid D.

How the game ended: These 2 teams were neck and neck throughout the game.  Camb Med had the ball w/ :10 left in a tie game when Evans doubled Bascomb at half court.  They forced a turn over, Satori dished to Dinarian for a game winning lay-up, and Mike heard foot steps and missed the bunny - we had OT.  In OT Cambridge Medical scored a quick 5 points on a Bascomb 3 and Scuffenbil's 2 free throws.  CM wins a great game OT!
