Spring 2005: A2 League Champs: UCC

    UCC 69 Stackpole 60

This was the most physical game I have seen UCC play yet this season. They dominated the first half, as their physical style was controlling the tempo of the game. They had Stackpole airballing shots left and right. And holding the Chise to 8 points in a half usually means you got 5 people out there defending. UCCís offense was supplied by Rogelio (21pts) or 508 I would like to call him. My man was lights out not from behind the three point line, but from a different zip code. Along with 508, the D-Mac wasnít sitting well in Stackpoleís stomach as McClaren dropped 19 points. There D and potent offense had UCC up 15 at the half. To Stackpoleís credit, they came out ready to ball. Finally, the Chise got going as he finished with 22. Then Chris Toglia shook off the early airballs (including some from the free throw line) and started hittiní the jay. Stackpole got the lead down to 5, when the controversy started. There was a call that UCCís Rogelio and Stackpolís Chris Toglia did not agree on, they had some words. Then with after a trip down the court, with 2 minutes left to play they went at it. I mean they really went at it, blows were thrown, bows were dropped and I though I saw Hogan throw down a Leg drop off the ropes. Both players were ejected and the game ensued, but the game was already over as UCC would not relinquish the lead. (Both players will be subject to fines and suspensions by the Commish and Hoganís gym membership was suspended one month.)

UCC 81  Old Dirty Bastards 81

A tough not loss for UCC last night. Despite losing the game, they do get the W because half of the ODBís have gone MIA. This game started out with the patchwork ODB team taking it to UCC. Jrod filled in quite nicely, until he caught and elbow in the second half and had to leave the game. Jrodís 23 points and Jermaine Baynes 31 helped elevate the ODBís to a 7 point first half lead. However, UCC wasnít going quietly as Dave McClaren was playing like he was trying to get McDonaldís to give him a deal. After dropping 22 points, the McDonald people gave him the green light. As the ODB defender on Dave found out, when you order a D-Mac, you donít get a sandwich, you get a shake. Nobody could stop his penetration, as he shook off one defender after another. Then Rogelio (19pts) and JB (14pts)started to get it done inside and out. UCC got the lead to within 2, with 5 minutes to go. Thatís when Dan Herman (22pts 16 2nd halfpts) took the game over. ODBís predator went off in the second half to pump the lead up to double digits. Once the lead was in double digits with 2 minutes left to go, the game was over and UCC fell short. Hope you feel better JROD.

    Red Rum 60  Showtime 74

The first game between CRFC all stars went to Showtime as they were able to dominate Redrum and decisively win. Showtime started the game running and gunning as the Commish (10asst) was finding every open man on every single break. It didnít look good early for RedRum as Showtimeís Shandor Garrison (17pts 16rebs) was running circles around the Redrum D. The lead was pushed up to 16. Then RedRum made their first run. Steve Bruger (15pts) and the Sergen (13pts 10rebs) heated up late in the first half to cut the lead to 6 at the half. The beginning of the second half belonged to Greg Poulos. Steve Martin must have been saying ìthis kid (me) wants to coach a varsity team and he leaves the best player (Greg Poulos) in the gym open 4 consecutive times?î Greg (36pts) rattled off 4 straight threes to open the second half, and again Redrum found themselves down 16. Then RedRum made their second run with Chris Dionne flashing his inside/outside game (18pts). Again, the lead got down to 6. Missed free throws, turnovers, and not being able to stop the Showtimeís running game led to yet another collapse as Showtime got the lead up to double digits and kept it there.

    Stackpole 66  Evans Elementry 51

Part two of A2ís rivalry week, pitted the two Saugus teams against them. I must confess, I thought that before the game both teams would want to declare a tie or something like that to keep them from competing against each other (we all know Saugus kids stick together), but I was wrong. All friendships were thrown out when the ball went up. The Chise (27 pts 16rebs) led a first half charge that set the tempo of the game and was playing like the Chise of old. However, it wasnít the Stackpole offense that got the job done, it was their D. Stackpole just tortured Evans. Every missed shot or turnover by Evans turned into buckets for Stackpole as they held a comfortable 34-19 halftime lead. The second half was the same story. Stackpoleís Chris Toglia (21pts) and Matt Filosa (14pts) helped contribute to Chiseís scoring as they ran the lead up to past 20 at some points. This one was all Stackpole as they take down Evans in the first Saugus vs. Saugus battle.
