Winter 2010: A2 League Champs: The Situation

Big Nice Routs Count It to Birth in Championship
Big Nice 73 Count It 54

From the opening tip, Big Nice came out playing hard and determined to put Count It away before they had a chance to pull a March Madness style upset.  Mazzy came out bombing and yapping, O'Cal ran the point and JPress was, as usual, quiet, cool and effecient.  On a team where shots are at a premium, Powder makes sure to make the most of the shots he does get, making sure to convert the bunnies and tough ones alike.

With CPW showing up late and providing fresh legs off the bench, Big Nice just ran out too many offensive weapons and overwhelmed Count It.  Despite Josh trying to shoot the team back in it, and Aziz busting @$$ on both ends of the floor, Count It was never able to threaten the lead.  The second half everyone was just going through the motions and waiting for the clock to tick down. Or maybe because it was the late game that was just DMac and I.  Not really sure.

Big Nice will take on The Situation in the A2 Final next week at 8:30 PM. Check the boards for the Awards this weekend as the A2 All Star Game will take place at 9:20 after the Finals!

Big Nice claims the thrown atop A2

You know the deal by now, right? Head to Tommy Doyle's after your game for Half Prized Appetizers on Thursday nights and $12 Pitchers! Don't forget, if you get a Tommy Point, it's good for one free drink!

The battle of the undefeated teams definitely lived up to the hype. Before the game Big Nice Guard Tom Kahana aka RoY decided to move down from his perch on the balcony (as he fakes a foot injury to rest up for the playoffs) to coach the team from the bench in this one. You could see the sweat glistening from his forehead as the game started and the beast in the middle Chris Williams was not to be found.

The game started, without Williams, and the Situation was having their way. Ian Kilpatrick was getting any shot he wanted on the floor with nobody on Big Nice to match up with him. Big Nice was able to stay in the game as Mazz getting to the bucket and the charity stripe consistently. The arrival of Williams shortly after the game started was definitely a jump start to Big Niceís ability to score in the paint, and they were able to cool down the Situation and cut into their lead going into the locker room only down by 4, 35-31.

During the 2nd half Kilpatrick stayed hot, this time knocking down a couple of 3s while the defense backed off a bit looking for the drive. He finished with a game high 25 points and 9 rebounds. Running mate Bobby Colantonio contributed across the board with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists; it just wasnít enough to hold off the surge of Big Nice. OíCal was the leader on the floor for these guys finding Mazz (24 points, 7-of-9 FT) and Williams (18 points 9 rebounds) for easy buckets throughout the 2nd half. Sean ended 1 assists shy of a double-double, 11 points and 9 assists, and Big Nice pulled off a 69-61 win.

With the comeback victory RoY stays undefeated in his coaching career. Maybe he should think about calling it a career as a player and just stay on the bench, I canít be positive, but Iím almost certain he isnít undefeated as a player.

Big Nice has shown they can go through the league once, but can Press, Williams and company continue the dominance at the top of A2? Letís see what they got the 2nd time around; I donít think they are going to find it as easy, I hope Coach Kahana has some tricks up his sleeve.

    Itís Majiccccc for Threeeeeee

You know the deal by now, right? Head to Tommy Doyle's after your game for Half Prized Appetizers on Thursday nights and $12 Pitchers! Don't forget, if you get a Tommy Point, it's good for one free drink!

Talk about a shoot out. There were a total of 54 three point attempts combined by the two teams, and as it may look like there was defense played by the number of blocks and steals on both teams, donít be fooled. It was a fireworks battle, back and forth.

Count it recruited Jim from the Situation to fill in for this tilt. If the points donít add up for their statistics thatís because Jim had 38 of those points, shooting 6 of 13 from downtown and grabbing 17 boards. Iím sure he wouldíve loved to trade this performance in for the one from the game before. He obviously helped keep Fritz (28 points, 11 boards, 5 assists) and company in this game and it showed from the get go as they ran out to a 10 point lead in the first half, holding it down with a score of 47-37.

You didnít think Cold, Smooth, Illegal would go down that easy though, did you? They absolutely torched the nets in the second half scoring 63 points in the 2nd! Majic (6 3ptm, 29 points) and Vladi (3 3ptm, 22 points) led the team back from downtown, while Ambra held it down in the middle with 31 points in the paint. Count it was ìheld toî 45 points in the 2nd partly due to the block party held by Zarmon, Tibbs and Majic on their end of the paint.

Now that the gauntlet has been run by all the teams, we start the merry-go-round again with Cool, Smooth, Illegal trying to use their momentum from this 100 point explosion to put out the fire that is the undefeated Big Nice.
