Summer 2021: B 5v5 EAST League Champs: BUCKETS

Buckets Dominate Boards En Route to 54-51 Championship Win Over Julius Swerving
    Buckets 54 Julius Swerving 51

The #5v5East Championship game turned out to be one of the most exciting of the entire season. Deray Willis was big on the inside scoring and rebounding at will, but Julius Swerving fought back to make it 9-9 with 11:34 remainng in the first half after a nifty take by Khalid Lakanwal. Timely shooting from Will Otto and solid inside play from Jim Birrill for Swerving made for a 24-18 lead with 7:00 minutes remaining in the half. Olawole Tunde-Lukan then lead a one man comeback with steals, rebounds, and transition baskets that Swerving had no answer for. Frank Salvador capped off a run for the Buckets leading to halftime with a buzzer beater three-pointer, 36-30 advantage Buckets.
Julius Swerving regained the lead with intense defensive pressure 4 minutes into the 2nd half. Deray Willis and Bill Claflin continued to dominate inside for the Buckets, and Khalid and Ray Kluender uncontiousnessly nailed outside shots for Sweving - and suddenly the two teams were trading the lead for the remainder of the contest. This one may have gone the other way, as The Buckets did their best to let Julius Swerving hang in this one, as they connected on just 5-12 free throws, mostly down the stretch. Ultimately Swerving just couldn't keep the Buckets off the boards, relinqushing costly second and third chance points that lead to the Buckets eventually taking the Championship in a nail biter 54-51.
