First off, if you haven’t already, check out Vella’s episode of CAC Inside Stuff. In the video, he provides highlights for the West Final between Root Tang Clan and Fat Guys On a Little Court. Great work on the video as usual, Vella.

The big highlight: Moments before tip-off, I was told first round pick Mike Comtois would be unavailable for the game. It was obviously very shocking news at the time, but I do hope everything is ok for Mike.

Without Comtois, Root Tang Clan was heavy favorites. They were already 5.5 point favorites going into the game, assuming everyone was fully staffed, but this now had all the makings of a blowout. Here’s what went down in the game.

As evidenced by the video above, Kap hit a three to give Fat Guys a 3-2 lead, but Jeff Rubin would take Seth to the hoop two possessions in a row to start the game. Score after Rubin’s second layup: Fat Guys 3, Rubin 4. On the following possession, it was Jason Root knocking down a three to make it 7-3, in favor of Root Tang.

Moments later, it was Tang knocking down a triple to make it 10-5. Soon after, Jeff Rubin (this can also be found in the video) threw a behind the back pass to Root for an easy two. Sidenote on that pass: That was an inbounds play. Rubin looks like he was a few feet onto the court.

Root Tang Clan’s first half lead would peak at twelve, 17-5, after another JRoot three. Kap would stop the bleeding with a three point play to cut their deficit to nine, but then...the show belonged to Harry Demakes. My favorite part of Inside Stuff is Demakes’ stretch of the game where he puts Fat Guys on his back. That’s a lot of weight, by the way. Demakes had three steals and six huge points in a few minutes time, including a turnaround hook on Noah. Kap afterward yells, “COOK HIM!”

To close out the half, Root Tang Clan went on a 10-5 run to give them a 29-24 lead at the break. Root and Kap led all scorers with sixteen points each, followed up by six apiece from Demakes and Rubin.

In the second half, things just got out of hand, quickly. Root Tang Clan started off the second half with a 22-3 run, which included triples from Tang, Noah, Root, and Seth - his first playoff bucket! For some teams, it could take a whole half to score 22 points, but Root Tang Clan did so in about five minutes of time. The run was capped off by Tang’s third three of the night to give RTC a 51-27 lead, and that was pretty much the game right there. It’d be near impossible for Fat Guys On a Little Court to overcome that type of beatdown without their first round pick. The final score was 82-58, with Root Tang Clan advancing to the Unification Game to represent the West.

    Notes:

Kevin Tang and Jeff Rubin would have been the first pair of teammates to get triple-doubles in the same game since....? I don’t know if I have ever seen that at any level, not just at the CAC. Tang recorded a triple double, but Rubin was one assist away this week.

    I like Ian Marlier’s twitter handle, @tallape.

Kap swears he wasn’t yelling, rolling his eyes, etc on Thursday night. Not only is he turning into a psycho on the court, but he also doesn’t want to believe it, either. (Had an awesome time at his birthday party, though!)

    Noah won the West...again. Damnit.
