WINTER 2022: B Draft League Champs: Armstrongageddon

Miyagi-Do shows Girth is greater than Length
    Miyagi-Do 68 Length > Girth 63

This game had teams seemingly heading in opposite directions with Miyagi-Do reeling after three straight losses and Length > Girth on a two-game winning streak since they got embarrassed by Armstrongageddon. The biggest question mark coming in was whether or not Swecker would be in attendance. He was reportedly questionable, but was there well before the game, meaning we had two full teams squaring off.

With Swecker on the floor from the jump, Miyagi-Do got off to a quick start. Swecker nailed a three and Harry had a fantastic finish for an and-one giving Miyagi-Do a 7-3 lead. Length responded quickly after that and had some really good ball movement leading to good looks for Pollock and co. Both teams got really good minutes from their bench after the initial stretch with Motha actually passing the ball and then knocking down a three as well. For Length, Georges-Clapp gave them some good minutes, knocking down a three, passing the ball well and getting a loud block. Things were back and fourth for a while in this stretch with Miyagi staying ahead but only by a bucket or two. Length > Girth got the first lead of the game when on a Kirk put back at 24-22 with 8 minutes left in the first half. Miyagi-do got really sloppy for a stretch after that, coincidently as soon as Harry left the floor. Over the rest of the first half, both teams pkayed some really nice basketball, something we haven’t been able to say too often this year. The game had a really good tempo and both teams were playing hard. Length-Girth had the lead until late, but a nice stretch from Vladi finding Mackay for a finish at the rim and then for a three gave Miyagi-Do back the lead at half 36-34.

The second half started off like the first half ended with the two teams going back and forth and the game being played at a nice tempo. Vladi finally hit a three with thirteen minutes left to make the score 46-44 and it seemed as though he might get hot and lead Miyagi-Do on a run. PGC had something to say about that, however and had some really nice defense at the rim and led to some easy baskets for Length. The Miyagi-Do bench would not be outdone, however as Mackay continued his strong play and knocked down a big three to give Miyagi-Do a 55-51 lead. That three ushered in a few minutes of basketball more like what we had been accustomed to seeing this year as both teams struggled to score. In that stretch only one point was scored and nothing summed up the game more than Cavano missing a layup and then committing a turnover on the inbounds. After Pollock hit one of two at the line, we had a four point game with just under two minutes left. Motha would then hit a huge put back, but Cavano would miss a three, a common trend for Length who hadn’t hit one in the half up to this point. Harry then make a very savvy play leading to three free throws, of which he knocked down only one. Length continued to be unable to hit anything, but Miyagi couldn’t put it away. After a Dwyer three and Kodra two we had things back at a four-point deficit. Harry would then hit two clutch free throws, but Dwyer answered quickly, knocking down another three with only a few seconds left. All Miyagi-Do had to do was inbound the ball and make a free throw to win and they were able to with Vladi knocking down a pair. Final score 68-63 Miyagi-Do.

    Miyagi-Do

Vladi A-: Nice game from Vladi who played like a true point guard in this one. Had eight assists and also knocked down some clutch shots down the stretch.

Swecker B: Solid game from Swecker, but was somewhat limited by the Length’s length and struggled from the foul line where they sent him often.

Harry B+: Nice game from Harry who had a couple big buckets and savvy veteran plays that were key down the stretch.

Motha B: Solid game chipping in 9/7/2. Used his physicality well down low and had a huge put back late in the game.

Mackay A-: Another double-digit performance for Matt who has been one of the better bench scorers in the league this year.

Webert B: Played really good defense and was very active on the boards. Would like to see him be a little more assertive on offense.

    Length > Girth

Cavano D-: Not Chris’s best day at the office. I wonder if hearing Harry call out right-hand every time he touched the ball got in his head.

Kodra B-: Played solid defense on Swecker, but seemed indecisive on offense and struggled on that end.

Kerk A-: Nice game off the bench, matching the physicality of the Miyagi bigs down low.

Dwyer B: Had some good stretches, but also was quiet for a long portion of the game.

Georges-Clapp B: Played really good defense with three blocks, but couldn’t find his shot.

Pollock: B+: Led his team in scoring, but seemed to struggle at times around the rim and was quiet for stretches.
