Winter 2011: B1 5v5 League Champs: GTL

GTL Wins The B1 East 5v5 Crown
    GTL 65 Fidel's Guerreros 47

GTL and Fidel’s Guerreros took the court in the B1 5v5 East Finals both vying for a chance to head to the title game the next night. Both teams looked ready to go in pre game warm-ups and I was excited to get this one under way.

Both teams came out of the gate really hot as defense was limited on both ends. Taub got the action going for GTL making some very difficult shots in the paint, from the post and off the dribble. Taub was truly a beast in the opening minutes as he really led GTL offensively giving his team an 18-8 lead.

Fidel’s Guerreros stayed tough mentally though and wouldn’t give up. O’Malley provided FG with a much needed spark on offense to weather the opening surge by GTL. After some big perimeter buckets by O’Malley, FG was down only 3 with about 8 minutes to go in the first half and we had ourselves a game.

I had to wonder if FG could hang with GTL in this one for the full 44 minutes as it appeared early that they lacked the offensive firepower to keep up with a deep and strong GTL team. At the break though, FG was very much in the game trailing by only 6.

In the second half GT really got it going, pouring it on offensively, especially from three. McAndrew really had the stroke going in the 2nd half hitting back-to-back threes and helping GTL boost the lead to 18. All of a sudden this had become a blowout and GTL could see the title game in their sights.

McAndrew really asserted himself in the 2nd half en route to a game high 20 points while going 4/8 from deep. The McAndrew-Taub tandem proved to be too much for FG to handle despite a valiant effort by O’Malley and company. GTL’s team play and depth won out tonight as they head to the B1 5v5 title game. Good luck guys.
