Winter 2008: B1 League Champs: Full Tilt

Full Tilt Pulls away With Late Free Throws
    Cha-Ching 47 Full Tilt 55

The double rim is tough for everyone, and Full Tilt is no exception.  They scored only 18 points in the first half and found themselves trailing by 8 at the break.  Greg Noel (18 points) was doing everything he could to help build Cha-Ching's lead as big as possible for they switched ends.  But it wasn't big enough, as Full Tilt scored more points in the first 5 minutes of the second half than they did in the entire first.  The 19-5 run helped them establish some control over the game, as the 5th Man of the Year, Chris Wafula tossed in most of his 22 points.  But Cha-Ching answered right back to make the game close away, and despite the double rims, didn't go down without a fight. But they weren't able to contain T-Gun down the stretch, as Full Tilt got 27 attempts at the free throw line, including a huge T against Kuzdeva when they were only down 2, and converted on just enough (18) to keep this game at arms distance.  With the Pint and Jimmie (5 combined points, 14 boards) struggling on the offensive end, it looked like Full Tilt was in trouble, but they survive to play the winner of the B1 West in the B1 Final Four next week.

Miracle Man - Cogdell Burys Game Winner to Sink Steamboats

I mean, wow, what more is there to say about what went down at the 5:30 game.  As it was, the Wolverine was waiting for me to haul my ass out of the Sox game and get to C.A.C. to fulfill my 'duties'.  Ha, I said Duty - but no time for that now! We've got a game to recap.  Pardon me, I've been pregaming for the Sox since 10AM, so maybe I'm not the most 'qualified' person for this recap, but you're all I've got.  Good thing that I was late, as the Mighty MJ D (33 points, 12 boards) arrived at Wall Ball Arena just moments after I allowed Filosa throw his wobbled jump ball.  Without him on the floor, the Firm jumped to 20-11 as Bruno game out with guns blazing.  As a team, they were as riled up as I've seen them, and this being playoff time, it was at least fitting.  But once MJ D stepped onto the floor, the Steamboats were a different team.  He set up Pootie Tang (4 points), Ricky (3 points) and Employee # 8 (13 of his 17 points before halftime) with many easy open looks when we wasn't dropping the hammer himself.  The Firm had no answer, and despite Bruno dropping 14 in the first, they were down 4 at the break.

The second half was more of the same, with neither team being able to build their lead beyond a two possession game.  Manny (20 points, 7 boards) was taking advantage of his mismatches in the post, but they should have went to him more often.  He had 6 inches and 50 pounds on his defenders.  FEED HIM!!!!  With Filosa calling few fouls than even O'Cal would have, we had a physcial, dirty game going on.  The Firm was up 1 with 14 seconds to go, but then the Wolverine decides to blow his whistle!! Dinh went to the line thanks to what looked like a touch foul (maybe the camera caught something i didn't see, but I doubt it), and Dinh had the chance to give his team a huge advantage.  He only hit 1 of 2, he could only tie the game up!! Unreal, as I expect a B1 East MVP man to come through in that spot.  Thuy would have hit both, and he'll tell you all about it.  But with time running down, it was team captain Todd Cogdell (5 points) that was handling the ball.  He was the unlikely hero, as Manny and Bruno would have been the first two options in my book.  As he dribbled out the clock and drove to the lane, a floater went up.  But what's that? His eyes, they were closed!! I swear I saw him shut them before lofting up a hail mary.  Amazingly, his prayers, unlike mine to win the lottery just once in my life, were answered, and the Firm moves on to the next round in stunning fashion.  A tough loss for the Steamboats, but they weren't even expected to make it this far, so it's a moral victory, I guess.  Bartender!!
