Winter 2010: B1 League Champs: Basketballs Deep

At least someone played a competitive game....
    Guards-R-Us 67 Silky Johnson 62

Holy Crap I didn't do round 1 write-ups?!?! Must be because of the 3 blowouts all by at least 36 points. You think that was fun for me?!? It wasn't. At least i can sleep walk my way through those write-ups.

But not this one. Ok, I probably still will, as for much of this game it was an ugly defensive battle when neither team could generate much O.  Silky Johnson certainly had their chances to pull this one out.  Roly, or DoubleBarrel if you follow the Lunch League at all, was once again the go to guy. He and Haven made it work in the first half, continually taking momentum away from GRU and establishing their own pace.  With Belletti coming through in the second half, i thought they'd have enough to get it done.

But no, all it takes is a five minute lull and a quality team like Guards R Us pounces.  Larkin, in particular, is capable of catching fire on the turn of a dime.  Without Evans, Kaplan was shockingly the steady hand, breaking double digits in both halves and, as usual, absolutely clutch at the free throw line.

It's been rough billing for DBag this seaosn, who's been asked to guard basically eveyrone in the league, rebound, especially when evans isn't around, and only take a couple 3s per game while everyone else is firing away.  All that and he barely generates a mention in the write-ups because of it. Well I'm sick of it! He and Rob both played great, and again, without Evans, it was good to see them getting more shots and PT!

Let's hope Frail convinces Evans to show next week against BDeep, or else that game will be as ugly as the first 3 were in this round, no one wants to watch games that bad...

Firm Gets Easiest Win of the Season

It's been a couple seasons since The Firm has stepped foot into Wall Ball Arena, and it will be a another week still.  GSD was at least kind enough to let me know ahead of time that they wouldn't be in attendance.  However, GSD is out for the season! If you're reading this and don't have a team, please send me an immediately (CACBasketball@gmail.com) as I need either 4 free agents or an entire roster of players, to fill this vacant spot for the rest of the season!

I can't wait to see The Firm back in action. Check the message boards this weekend for the league preview! (click me!!)

C.A.C. Basketball is back!! The Winter 2010 season features more great deals from Tommy Doyle's.  Head there after your game for Half Priced Appetizers on Thursday nights and $12 Pitchers! Don't forget, if you get a Tommy Point, it's good for one free drink!

What a game we had for the official opener in the B1 West 4v4 Winter 2010 season.  Is it me, or does every season the names of the leagues get a little longer? Ah well, the price of expansion I guess.  Speaking of expansion, we have a very solid 8 team league and a free agent team that runs 8 guys deep!! Who'd have thought that everyone would actually show up this season?  Again, the price of expansion.

But it was a rough start for the new guys.  The veteran E-Town squad (seriously, peep their stats, almost everyone's first league is Fall 2005, seriously that's when TIBBS first started.  That was a loooong time ago, four and a half years) came ready to play.  Wait, can I go back to my side bar? There aren't that many guys left from my first season, way back in September '05.  Lots of stars, legends, role players, and flat out ballers have come and gone in that time, you know who's still here, THIS GUY!! Know your role.

Anyway, back away from the side bar.  E-Town came out playing well.  Jay Schuster, aka the Knuckler, and MILTON came out red hot, guns blazing.  Each dropped 10 points in the first half as E-Town took an 11 point lead.  Seriously, every time MILTON hits a 3, I just have to yell his name. It's a great one, the man doesn't even need a nickname.  Just yell "MILTON!!" Immediate smile on your face.

For Sausage N Peppahs, it took a while to find a bit of chemistry.  They had 8 guys, they're all free agents and most of them had never played together.  Everyone but Lewis had scored in the first half, and noe one had more than 7 points. The Balance was impressive.

But to come back against E-Town, someone was gonna need to step his game up. And that man, was Lewis.  Seriously, did you see that jumper, it was Sweet.  Sweet....Hmmmm...Sweet Lew had a monster second half, hitting 2 of 3 from downtown to help S N P chip away at their deficit.  With Derek Zundl, DZ, or Zoolander, whatever you want to call him, as the calming, veteran influence, S N P was withing striking distance.

But every time it looked like they'd make a run, Fitzy, aka DJ Casper, would hit a big shot.  This dude, right here, should win the League's MVP award this season. There is no one else in the league with his combo of size, finess and skill, he's just got to put it all together every week.

But Sausage N Peppahs would never go all the way away.  Mike P was hitting 3s (the team hit 10 total!) Connor was providing solid D and Hansen was cleaning the glass.  Sweet Lew then hit a MONSTER 3 ball with a minute left to give his team their first lead since it was 8 - 7.  It took CAJONES to let that thing fly, but by gum he did.  DJ Casper of course answered with his own big play, an AND 1 that had the crowd on its feet.  but not to be out down, BCormier comes in and hits a bigger 3!! It gave S N P the lead for good.  Seriously Cormier was INSTANT OFFENSE off the bench for his squad tonight, and you konw what, because he was so key, and clutch, he's getting the Microwave nickname.  If you don't know the reference, then screw you.  There is no more Brian Cormier, just Microwave.

So yea, E-Town lost in shocking fashion, and I provided a shockingly long write-up. Don't expect either for the rest of the season!!

These Men Made through the Tests at Wall Ball Arena

C.A.C. Basketball is back!! The Winter 2010 season features more great deals from Tommy Doyle's.  Head there after your game for Half Priced Appetizers on Thursday nights and $12 Pitchers! Don't forget, if you get a Tommy Point, it's good for one free drink!

Wow I'm winded just from banging out that last write-up. You guys don't expect the same treatment do you? It's good to see some familiar faces making their way back to Wall Ball Arena.  You all might not remember the Made Men, heck I can't remember what their old team names were. But I remember the players! Billy the Kid can flat out shoot the rock as proven by his 7 for 15 performance in his first game back, and looks like he hasn't aged a year since he joined C.A.C.  Seriously, I was going to give one of these guys the Tommy Point, but I'm unsure if any of them are of legal drinking age yet.  Can I get a confirm or deny??  Who else, oh, right THE BOOM KING.  Yea, I am so, so excited to bust this nickname back out.

So, pre-game, everyone's warming up, getting used to C.A.C. again, and down goes Fidler on the Roof.  Seriously, who rolls their ankle on a basketball before the game even starts?!  Pat, that's who apparently. Anyway, no one thinks he's going to play, but he shakes it off to start the game, and have a respectable double double in the process. Definitely not his usual effort, but it was enough to get it done.  That's because after a while, Billy was milking the 3 ball and opening up the D, and Fidler had enough push off his ankle to go to the hole over and over and over again.

But let's talk about Silky's valient effort hm?  They were never far out of this game, Roly made sure of that in the first half, while Haven made sure of it in the second. Each guy dropped in a solid 20 spot.  Even though I think it's been about 2 years since 3/4ths of this team played at Wall Ball Arena (Roly being the regular exception) they came ready to compete. Once the Alias and Chris Belletti stop going to Cs games, that they lose, this team will be a contender!  Cullen, The Helicopter, Roberts dominated the boards and this game was closer than I expected. Seriously, big shot after big shot went down for Silky.

But just like much of the night, when it came down to it, the Made Men were getting 3s for Silky's 2s, and nailing their free throws.  Just too much offense from what should be one of the better teams in the league (to find out my full opinions, hit the message boards tomorrow!)

    You canít Guard Us

C.A.C. Basketball is back!! The Winter 2010 season features more great deals from Tommy Doyle's.  Head there after your game for Half Priced Appetizers on Thursday nights and $12 Pitchers! Don't forget, if you get a Tommy Point, it's good for one free drink!

Tough first night for the new to CAC basketball, Forresterites (what does that even mean?) as they were matched up against Guards-R-Us who sport multiple wall ball veterans. Captain Marc Frail has attempted to design a new squad with a philosophy that goes against the ìbig men winî strategy by constructing a team of snipers to take on the B1 West. Iíd say so far, so good Marc. Chalk a vote up for GM of the Year after this shellacking.

As you might be able to tell Iím stretching for material here since there wasnít much of a game within the walls as final score of Guards 91 ñ Forresterites 31 tells you. You canít discount the new guys for their effort, though. The Guards just ran away with it; literally, as they had about 40 fast breaks points as Frail (29 points, 6 rebounds) would just always seem to be behind the defense running the court as if he were forgotten.

Things did get chippy at the end as the Guards showed no mercy, launching 3s and driving to the hoop at will. A couple of hard fouls and an exchange of words went down but in the end everything was kosher as the Guards walked away with the victory.

For the Forresterites, Mike Ivins led the team with 10 boards and Chris Perrotti paced the offense with 7 points and 8 boards. Next week doesnít get any easier either as Billy Buckley, the league leader in 3s and points per game, and his Made Men come to Wall Ball Arena for a 9:40pm game.
