Winter 2012: B1 League Champs: Off Ourselves

Nobody beat Off Ourselves all season
Team Bring It 75 Off Ourselves 84

First off, I want to say congratulations to everyone on a great season here in the Wall Ball Arena. We only had 6 teams, but those 6 teams made the most of it. Just look at the Wet Tebows. Also, if you haven\'t already, go sign up for next season, as the window of opportunity is closing fast. Now, on to the game..

Going into this one, I was pretty sure that Off Ourselves was going to accomplish something that a certain football team that plays in Foxboro failed to do a few years ago, and run the table to win the championship. Why did I bring that up? Now I\'m depressed..

Anyway, I fully expected Off Ourselves to win tonight, but if there was any team that could have a chance to beat them, it was Team Bring It. In the line/analysis I did on the boards, I already talked about the potential matchups. Unfortunately for TBI, they were missing an important piece in Jim D for this one, and I can only assume his presence would have really helped, and may even have pushed them over the top. Where are his priorities?

Game time rolled around, and I can\'t believe it, but the MVP isn\'t even here for OO! Is it too late for me to rescind the award and give it to Polansky? It is? Oh well.

Even without the MVP, OO jumped out to an early lead, on the strength of some good shooting from 3 from Khalid, who went 4 for 8 in the first half. Guess he could have won the Ray Allen award, too. You know, thinking back, OO probably could have swept the awards this season (except the Donaghy award, which may have to be renamed the Sydorko award), but what fun would that have been?

TBI struggled to find their offense in the early minutes of this one, especially Mazz, who went 0 for 4 from downtown in the first half, and was just plain off. They got their shit together about 5 minutes in, as Bayley knocked down a 3 to cut the OO lead to 11-7, then hit a layup on the break to cut it to 11-9, but that was the closest TBI would get in this one, as OO recovered and Khalid knocked down a couple 3\'s, to extend the lead to 23-15 a few minutes later.

You know it\'s a championship game from the intensity of the guys on the court. Some guys play with their emotions, and others play like Bobby. But like I said, this is the championship, and even Bobby isn\'t immune to the intensity of the moment, and, to my surprise, there was a point where he actually yelled at the ref. Did that just happen? I didn\'t know he could raise his voice..

As the first half drew to a close, Off Ourselves went on a run. Carpin knocked down a 3 to put them up 11, Bruno showed up (late), stepped on the court, got a steal and knocked down a 3 on the other end, and generally caused havoc defensively with 3 of his 4 steals in the 7 minutes of the first half he played after he showed up, and Off Ourselves led 52-33 at the break. So much for my 5.5 point line.

At the half, TBI was discussing adjustments, and must have realized that Drew was getting wherever he wanted with the ball, and maybe it would be a good idea to get him the rock a little more. Well, it was a good idea, and TBI went on a run behind that, cutting the lead to 12 in the first few minutes, then tightening up on defense and cutting the lead to 7 after Mazz sunk a couple free throws, making the score 66-59 with 6 minutes left.

But that was the closest TBI would get in the second half. As the clock wound down, fouling time started, and OO looked like they were trying to give it away. Dillan went to the line 7 times late in the game, and only hit 1 free throw, but luckully for OO, the shoulda-been MVP Adam Polansky was there to get two HUGE offensive rebounds off of the Shafer (and Corbett) misses in the last minute, and Off Ourselves was able to hold on and complete the perfect season. Shut up, Mercury Morris.

    Moses Guthrie's Ghost 62  Eck's Crew 56

Julius Erving was needed to save Eck’s Crew…

Using the eye test, these two teams seemed pretty evenly matched despite Eck’s Crew (EC) having 7 guys versus Moses Guthrie’s Ghost (MGG) having 5 guys.  Both teams were in desperate need of a win sitting winless and looking to be 1 of the 4 teams in the playoffs.

In the early going, MGG looked slightly better than EC holding an 18-12 lead with 10 minutes left in the half.  As the half closed MGG was able to keep their lead and was up 33-26 at halftime.  For MGG it was all about Malcolm 16 pts, 2 blks, 6 drebs and 2 asts and Raj 15 pts, 1 blk, 1 oreb and 1 dreb.

Second half is when the Henry show began.   Dude went nuts scoring 16 pts connecting on 3 three point baskets bring EC close at 56-58.  Despite the game being close Matt scored all 9 of his points in the second half and Malcolm basically iced the game at the free throw line.  Final score 62-56 MGG wins.

A tough loss for EC; they are now the only winless team in the league.  Things don’t get any easier for them next week. MGG looks to continue their winning ways but also have a tough opponent.

Wet Bandits 52  Team Bring It 76

Team Bring It sends the Wet Bandits home…

I’m pretty familiar with Team Bring It (TBI) and their pledge to stand fearless in the face of adversity and bring it every day.  The Wet Bandits (WB), not so much.  Aren’t these dudes in jail in Chicago?

The game started out pretty close and competitive TBI was up 17-13 with 9 minutes remaining in the half.  For the WB the shots just weren’t falling and TBI held a 32-20 lead.  I’m recommending that CAC starting immediately testing for steroids.  Why do you ask?  Booby C was having “another” great game 12 pts, 2 stls, 1 blk, 1 oreb and 1 dreb.  The only significant thing the WB did, definitely wasn’t positive, was when they basically did this to Drew http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuwK8kVfi1Y thankfully Drew was okay but he didn’t play in the game again, smart man.

Second half is when TBI really started to pour it on.  With 4 minutes gone from the half TBI was now up 42-22 and the game was basically over.  Solid games by Bill and Pat.  For TBI another candidate for the new steroid testing policy (yes I just made it a policy) is Mazz.  He went crazy.  I mean come on 6-10 from three-point line in the second half.  He even told me after the game that he missed some shots on purpose so no one would think anything.  Jimmy D basically did everything I believe he's clean though.

Let’s see if the juice I mean wins continue for TBI next week.  WB face the # 1 team next week and will try to recover.

Off Ourselves 68  Balls Deep 58

    Off to a 4-0 start…

Something was telling me that this particular game would be a good one.  Usually the team with more guys has a slight advantage.  So advantage Off Ourselves (OO) with 6 guys to Balls Deep (BD) 5 guys.

The first half was really close as both teams battled for control.  The largest lead came at halftime with OO up 36-32.  Adam was getting off for OO with 18 pts and 3 orebs.  For BD I like the game I was seeing from Matt 10 pts, 2 stls, 4 drebs and 1 ast.

Second half is when OO started to distant themselves from BD.  With 15 minutes left OO led 47-39. Despite the good half by Terry 12 pts, at the 8-minute mark OO was now up 53-43 and wouldn’t look back, final score 68-58.  Solid games by two Mike’s for BD.  On the winner’s side, Dillan and Khalid definitely contributed to the victory but the player of the game was Gary.  He had 18 pts, 2 stls, 2 orebs, 10 drebs and 5 asts.

BD should be able to recover next week with a win and I also expect OO to extend their winning streak.
