Tip-offs complete a perfect season
Just the Tip-Offs 62 Tyrannosaurus Rhett 48
It all came down to the Finals in the B2 North, one more chance to challenge Just the Tip-offs and prevent them from coasting to a second consecutive regional title. T-Rhett was up for that challenge and things got chippy early with a whole slew of fouls on both sides. The game plan seemed to be to make things physical and keep things in the paint so that TR could use their superior size and when M.Pignatelli found his cousin Ben for a lay-up they had the game tied at 14 early on.
The Tips were finding offense through Matt Leoni’s 3pt shooting, and with his own shot going a bit cold Mark Schulze just looked for Leoni on the perimeter. He hit a 3 + the foul to make it 24-18 and went 3-5 from deep in the first half. The Tips were taking it into the lane too but they were repeatedly blocked on their way to the rim (6 in the first half). Rhett himself came up with a nice block from behind and TR managed to keep it close, down 22-26 at halftime.
In the second half “The Kid” (as Keith calls him) Mark Schulze started to go IN to the tune of 10 straight points and a 10-0 run all by his self. He picked off passes, blocked shots and went coast to coast a couple of times in an effort to show why he earned the MVP in the B2 North. TR could not respond and couldn’t even score for the first 6 minutes of the 2nd half until MP hit a 3. Then Matt Schulze came right back with a 3 of his own and it looked like the wind went of T-Rhett’s sails.
How-e-va the scrappy old guys of TR kept fighting and when Dan Mortara hit a 3 + grabbed a Tommy Point with a tough steal they had cut the lead to 9 (37-46). Christian True Ground hit a 3 a few minutes later and it was 40-48, but it would get no closer. From that point on the Tips went on another 10-0 run through effortless ball movement and superior speed on the break. Eventually Medley picked off two long passes and the resulting lay-ups were the final nail in TR’s coffin. This was Just the Tips league to lose all year but they got the job done- best of luck in the Unification Final Four and hope they smoke those ‘not clever’ bitches from the B2 South.
Finals MVP: Mark Schulze 17 pts, 8 rebs, 6 asts, 4 stls, 3 blks
