Spring 2012: B2 5v5 League Champs: Just the Tip-Offs

    Tip-offs complete a perfect season
    Just the Tip-Offs 62 Tyrannosaurus Rhett 48

It all came down to the Finals in the B2 North, one more chance to challenge Just the Tip-offs and prevent them from coasting to a second consecutive regional title. T-Rhett was up for that challenge and things got chippy early with a whole slew of fouls on both sides. The game plan seemed to be to make things physical and keep things in the paint so that TR could use their superior size and when M.Pignatelli found his cousin Ben for a lay-up they had the game tied at 14 early on.

The Tips were finding offense through Matt Leoni’s 3pt shooting, and with his own shot going a bit cold Mark Schulze just looked for Leoni on the perimeter. He hit a 3 + the foul to make it 24-18 and went 3-5 from deep in the first half.  The Tips were taking it into the lane too but they were repeatedly blocked on their way to the rim (6 in the first half). Rhett himself came up with a nice block from behind and TR managed to keep it close, down 22-26 at halftime.

In the second half “The Kid” (as Keith calls him) Mark Schulze started to go IN to the tune of 10 straight points and a 10-0 run all by his self. He picked off passes, blocked shots and went coast to coast a couple of times in an effort to show why he earned the MVP in the B2 North. TR could not respond and couldn’t even score for the first 6 minutes of the 2nd half until MP hit a 3. Then Matt Schulze came right back with a 3 of his own and it looked like the wind went of T-Rhett’s sails.

How-e-va the scrappy old guys of TR kept fighting and when Dan Mortara hit a 3 + grabbed a Tommy Point with a tough steal they had cut the lead to 9 (37-46). Christian True Ground hit a 3 a few minutes later and it was 40-48, but it would get no closer. From that point on the Tips went on another 10-0 run through effortless ball movement and superior speed on the break. Eventually Medley picked off two long passes and the resulting lay-ups were the final nail in TR’s coffin. This was Just the Tips league to lose all year but they got the job done- best of luck in the Unification Final Four and hope they smoke those ‘not clever’ bitches from the B2 South.

New Era Cant Handle Just the Tip

Keith here, I know this is the first time your hearing from me in the North so I'll go easy with the writeups. Some casual, competitive basketball from all teams kept me interested until the final whistle.

From the 'TIP-OFF' Shultz showed both teams why he was the best player on the court. Playing good defense, leading to a game high 6 steals, to distributting and finished plays on his own. Leone and Kann were happy to be on the receiving end of Shultz's assists hitting most of their shots in the first and second halfs respectively. Kaufman played great defense in the game helping his team grab the W with personally chipping in 4 steals and 4 blocks.

Levine and Shaw tried their best keeping up with Tip-Offs keeping their team in the game until late in the second half. Not to mention Levine hitting a huge 3 pointer to cut the lead to 6 going into halftime. But that was as close to victory as New Era was going to get. Corwin and Milstone chipped in 20 points and 20 rebounds together but in the end the Tip's size was just too much for New Era.

Player of the game: Shultz-30 points, 10 assists, and 6 steals.

Keith here, I know this is the first time your hearing from me in the North so I'll go easy with the writeups. Some casual, competitive basketball from all teams kept me interested until the final whistle.

For the second game of the evening, Hancocks and T-Rhett played a tough yet sloopy game, with both teams having multiple players with 5 or more assists. T-Rhett got out to a big first half lead and didnt look back from there with Compaghone and Engle willing shots to finally fall in the second, and having the Pignatelli brother picking up all the loose balls even having Drucker send a few layups back to sender.

Hancocks just couldnt put all the pieces together in this one being down by only 8 at half and just letting T-Rhett players get into the paint in the second. Sheehan had a double-double but with only 9 team assists, hero/one-one-one basketball was the downfall. No ballmovement or screen and rolls lead to a stagnant offense and mismatches on the fastbreak defense. Fouls late in the game turned into easy and-1 opportunities for the opposition and eventually the win.

Player of the Game: Sheehan 19 points, and 10 rebounds.

    Purple Parrots=Best Name Ever.

Keith here, I know this is the first time your hearing from me in the North so I'll go easy with the writeups. Some casual, competitive basketball from all teams kept me interested until the final whistle.

I was routing for Purple Parrots to win just from their name alone. Even tho it was the last game I was amped for a team to have a Hidden Temple name. Awesome. Between Coleman, Betts, and Colony there may not have been enough rebounds for the rest of their teammates, but there definitely wasn't many second chance points for Hass G's. Colony locking up defenders outside and Coleman forcing players to stay out the paint made Purple Parrots a defensive juggernaut.

With Spaulding being the only player on Hass Gs with double digit points, it spells disaster for the outcome. Three players having 0 points for the game wont get the job done. Hirschberger drove the lane and got fouled converting a few and-1s and hitting most of his fould shots, including 9 rebounds for his team almost let them get to within ten. Almost.

Player of the Game:Whoever came up with your team name, and Coleman-12 points, and 10 rebounds.
