Nationals Tip More Cowbell In Overtime Classic

This game had it all and was certainly a candidate for the game of the season. More Cowvbell looked in control most of the way as Mike Zizik was struggling to find his shot (and Mike Flint was playing very tough defense on him). Aaron Fernandez kept his team close (22 points, 7 rebounds), but the story for More Cowbell was the play of its ìsupporting castî Matt Coox (16 points, 12 rebounds) and Marc Lo Ponte (11 points). A 2nd half spurt gave More Cowbell a seemingly comfortable lead with a few minutes to go. But Mike Zizik would have none of it as he scored 8 straight points down the stretch to help get his team a 3 point lead with 8 seconds to go. Enter Godfrey Chua, who, sporting our championship Thick Tubes t-shirt, nailed a clutch three pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. In the extra session, More Cowbell struggled to score as Zizik and Fernandez put them away for a huge win. More Cowbell drops its 2nd straight to 6-3 and will face the top team ALS in next weekís season finale. The Nationals improve to 5-4 and remain a threat to win it all.

    Ripcord Emerges From Cellar

In a battle for the basement, Ripcord took down Fama last night behind a second half surge lead by Jeff Nally (16 points). Ripcord never has any need to call 1-800-54 GIANT as Dave Fielding always takes care of the glass (7 points, 12 rebounds) and Rob Gendron always provides the methodical drives to the hoop (11 points, 8 rebounds).  Brian Merrill lead the way with 20 points but didnít receive much help from his mates. Maybe this team should implement a no Pinot Grigio policy before games? Ripcord iced the game with free throws and improve to 3-6 while Fama remains, like the Gimp from Pulp Fiction, alone in the cellar.

    Homeland Security 36  Millenium 41

Millenium took the division lead (at least for a day or so) with a win last night over Homeland Security. The Worm Jeff York lead the way with 19 points while Brian Salamas (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Taja Jennings (11 points) kept Homeland Security in it most of the way. Millenium improves to 8-1 and this division while Homeland drops to 3-5.

Wizards Preserve #1 Seed In Overtime

The Wizards had nothing to play for but the #1 seed in the playoffs last night. And that doesnít mean much in these leagues, but itís something. While I wasnít there for the game, I did get a full report from both those who saw it and those who were directly involved. I guess it was a close game throughout as Ian Tosti of the Town had 23 points on 7 threes and sidekick Mike ìCWebbî Cifelli had 16 points, 10 rebounds. Bob Muse got my message from Wednesdayís write-up and showed up for Genzyme for a monster game with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Down the stretch, a member of the Wizards called a 3rd timeout with 8 seconds to play and the game tied. A smart move under normal circumstances, but since teams at CRFC only get TWO time-outs a half, it was a potentially costly error. Fortunately, Genzyme didnít make them pay for it as they missed the free throws to send the game to overtime. In the extra session, the Wizards secured their #1 seed going into the playoffs with 8 straight wins. Genzyme heads into the playoffs with a 2-7 record, but a very good week of basketball that said, at least to me, that they will make a title run.

Treí, Treí Again: Red Hot Solid Gold Drops Volpe

Solid Gold took the 1st half as an opportunity to drop 8 three pointers and 46 1st half points to put away Volpe early. Mike Rybczyk continues to prove that he is one of the best players in the league with 31 points on what I would estimate to be 70% shooting form the floor. Tom Duvalís all around game has been well documented in this column (20 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, 6 steals) as he is the leader of this team, regardless of what I heard Rybczyk saying in the locker room earlier (joke).  And donít forget Jeff Dixon who has improved greatly over the years with (14 points, 9 rebounds). Volpe is always an entertaining team to watch with Randy Clarkís emergence this season (32 points) and the newest sensation Andre ìthe Coozî Darien (7 points, 13 assists), but it was too Solid Gold was shooting just too well for pretty much any team to keep up with them. Solid Gold improves to .500 while Volpe drops to 2-7.

    ALS Looking Dominant

Once again the top team in the league looked very dominating last night as the three headed monster of Shaq (27 points, 16 rebounds), Matt Bell (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Brad King (18 points, 13 assists) proved to be unstoppable as a unit. Jeff McCarthy had 14 points to lead the way for the Jiggyís, but it there was never a time that I wondered whoíd win this one. ALS improves to 8-1 and will face More Cowbell in next weekís finale while the Jiggyís have certainly been in this positi0n before ñ last place before the playoffs. And we all know what happened last year.
