Fall 2007: B2 League Champs: Cha-Ching

    Cha-Ching Upsets Joes
    Cha-Ching 66 Average Joe's 64

When I was informed that "Weapon X" Brian Greenburg was unable to attend the game due to his office Xmas party, I thought this game would really be just one of going through the motions for Cha-Ching and another disappointing end to a fine season. But what I didn't count on was the inspired play of these men without their fearless leader (by the way Greenburg, I hope that office Xmas party was at the Playboy mansion or something b/c otherwise missing a CAC playoff game for an office party is unacceptable!). Anyway, the Joe's came out with the same game plan they have had throughout the playoffs - establish Spaeth early on in the post as J-Loh distributes the ball to get everyone else involved. And this worked to perfection as the Joe's slowly but sure built a 5 or 6 point lead behind Spaeth (20 points) and Tamaro (6 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists). For Cha-Ching, the biggest All Star snub in CAC history Greg Noel (29 points) and Mike KuzdeBa (16 points, 6 rebounds) kept their team close enough to keep it interesting. But then in the 2nd half, it seemed all but over as Mr. MVP J-Loh simply took over the game (32 points, 13 rebounds), nailing three ball after three ball and mixing it up a little bit with a few drives to the hoop and ones. That 5 or 6 point lead ballooned to 14 with just under 10 minutes to play and it looked as if the Joe's would cruise in and finish off Cha-Ching. But then a funny thing happened - the typically laid back and level headed Joe's mood changed a bit as Cha-Ching slowly chipped away at the lead behind Noel's deadly shooting and Kuzdeba's drives and solid defense on Spaeth. With the lead back down to five and the Joe's looking for that final knockout punch, the Joe's received two technical fouls within 3 minutes (one for a loud expletive in my direction  and another for throwing the ball in the oppposite direction after I had asked for it). That gave Cha-Ching the break they needed to tie the game and eventually go up three with under a minute to play. A shocking turn of events for sure and the crowd seemed stunned. But then the MVP struck again with an enormous three ball to tie the game with under 30 seconds to play. After a Cha-Ching miss and a mad scramble for the ball, Noel went to the line and calmly nailed two freebies to put his team up two. A last second shot by the Joe;s was off the mark and just like that Cha-Ching advances to the B2 unification title game. They play the West winner in the unification bout in an attempt to finally reverse the curse and get their name up on the CAC banners. These unification games are always closer than expected, so it is not a foregone conclusion by any means. The Joe's end a phenomenal run on a disappoinitng note as I am sure an unbeaten season pales in comparion to a title, as I can personally attest to. Happy Holidays and we hope to see them back next season in what is sure to be the most competitive B2 East division yet.
