Fall 2009: B2 League Champs: Average Joes

FOT - Acosta Does It Again
    Genzyme 57 Average Joes 60

The more things change, the more they stay the same.  With all the expansion, multi-divisional leagues, and new teams, it all came down to Genzye and the Average Joes, two staples of the C.A.C. Basketball community.  The only surprise was that the Joes came in as the # 6 seed, but were playing some of their best basketball as a team in the post season. Sure they needed an Acosta 3 to bail them out with 1.8 seconds left last week, but a win is a win, and an upset is an upset...

So that left the top seeded Genzyme, who they battled to two epic finishes this season, but never while at full strength. Popular opinion was that, with a full team, the Joes should roll over the Zymites. I mean, 'everyone' knew that the only reason Gang Green was 8-2 (nay, 10-2) was because no one could field a full team at 5:30!!

In true Genzyme fashion this season, the game got off to the uglies of starts.  6-5 8 minutes in?! Sure, why not.  I didn't want to be kept awake up on the balcony or anything.  What's that, Big Bob Muse is the leading scorer 13 minutes into the game with 9 points? Ok, I can live with that, I like Big Bob, he was doing a great job on RoY Spann in the opening minutes.  Who said he shouldn't have been DPoY?! I will no admit that I didn't think Muse was going to be able to score a single point in this game going up against two guys his size that like to bang. I ate my words, oh they tasted so bitter, like A1 playoff defeat...

Any, back to the game.  The Joes used a 9-0 flurry before halftime to take a 30-28 lead. Yay, verily I say unto thee, any game in the 60s is no game Genzyme can win.  Basically, the pace was getting too fast, and they knew it.  But Five Hard Fouls threw in 7 key points (nothing but net 3!!) and Muse had 11 while Brad was waking up. Or shooting poorly, or whatever he was doing. At least he was crashing the glass.  Drama

Man how long is this write-up?! You bored yet?  In the second half, it was all Joes.  Sparkles and Acosta took over the offense. Spann was absolutely shut down by the DPoY (anyone still disagree with me? Check out Joff's and Spann's stat lines from the last two games, ALL MUSE!!) so they had to rely on the 3 ball. And there is one thing the Joes LOVE to do, it's rely on the 3!! Seriously, they thrive that way.  Joes up 11 (46-35) with 9 to go and I all but wrote off Zyme.

Silly Tibbs, playoffs are for comebacks!! The D dug in, Brad finally, FINALLY came alive and a 'quick' 11-0 run over 5 minutes tied this thing back up.  I can't get off the hook easily, can I?! But still Sparkles kept plugging away, hitting turnarounds, wide open 3s, Joes were going to win this game damnit!! Up 6 again somehow with 1:30 to go if they could have hit their freebies, you wouldn't see a F/OT in the title of this write-up. That was pages ago.  But no, they went 2-6 in that final 2 minutes.  Did I mention Muse hit a 3 yet? Yea, Muse hit a 3 to cut the lead in half.  Brad at the line, down 3, 10 seconds left, has to hit them both right? WRONG!! Just as Gerrity would have drawn it up, Brad misses the second free throw and FHF gets the game tying tip in. OOOOVVVVERTIME!!

You bored yet?! Well don't be, Joes score first in OT, Genzyme turnover. Gerrity STEAL and this thing is tied at 57. OT is so fast, clock stops only in the ifnal minute. Everyone's hacking, no one is getting to the line. So what do the Joes do? Dribble otu the last 30 seconds, fantastic.  Sparkles with a hard, clean pick, whipes out BMul and Acosta is standing wide open at the 3 point line. we just saw this last week, can we get it again!?! YES!! with 1 second leff, Acosta for 3!! He lives for these moments people!!

For the Joes, that means they've now taken out the # 1, # 2, and # 3 seed in the B2 East on their way to the Unificiation Final Four!  I'll let Westy know when the next game will be, don't worry, only two more to go! First the winner of the B2 South (still TBD) then the winner of the North/West from Monday nights! B2, where you've got to win 5 playoff games to get on a banner!!

Teams, B2 is filling up! The East on Tuesday at CAC is already full, but the other leagues still have some spots left.  Send me an email CACBasketball@gmail.com if you want to play in the Winter '10 League!

    Genzyme On a Roll

News: Brought to you by Tommy Doyles ($12 Pitchers & 2 For 1 Burgers)

Winter í10: Time is winding down on the Fall season, that means itís time to get ready for the next season! B2 was packed full with 31 total teams this season and is going to fill up again! Donít wait to save your spot.  Be sure to email CACBasketball@gmail.com to get in!

3v3 Tourney: Nov 14th and 15th is rapidly approaching and spots are filling up! Enter your team for a chance to win a free 4v4 League at C.A.C. in the Winter season!

Intro: What's this, no Watson for Cleary Club? Yikes, that's bad news for them, even with Frazier making his much anticipated debut, sadly too late to make the playoff roster.  But maybe he'll help them snap out of the funk they've been in the last couple weeks.

Game ReCap: Genzyme out to a 10-0 lead in this one. It takes Cleary 8 minutes to score.  Yea, that much has been going on in this one.  At least wedon't have to wait 20 minutes for BMul to score in this one.  Gerrity leads the league in flat-footed rebounds and looks to pad his total already grabbing three out of the sky tonight.  Or rather, having them fall into his hands.

Roly with a couple fouls early, and that's not going to help CC get back in this thing.  They need him on the floor to replace some of that O.  Hell they need any O!  Dee tries to oblige by knocking down a few Js, but there is a serious lid on the hoop.  This is not how I wanted to start my night.  The NBA tips off tonight, I need high scoring action, keep me involved!

Greezey with the offensive pput back! He's skying for boards, if Gerrity would get that kind of lift he'd lead the league in boards!

FUCK! I forgot to set my DVR for the Cs game.  I hate myself

There's a Watson sighting! It's only 17-14 at the break, so he could lead them back into this thing. Oh wait, sorry Brad has 17 to CCs 14, Zyme has 28. Still, they're not out of it.

Get a Right Greezey!! It helps if you start running as soon as you make the steal, not wait until you realize you're being chased.

See that, the offense is just fine with Watson now. He's got 7 quick points, and that's what the hole is at.  Make that back to 12, that was fine, Brad, feeling uber-confident jacks a three backed up against the wall. Of course it goes in...

Seriously, this Genzyme team just loves to play some ugly basketball. Even without Muse the D is solid, Greez getting a ton of boards and Brad making his case for MVP.  Gerrity with a potenttial early dagger! Any time he hits that step back and leaves the hand in the air it's just demoralizing. And now you guys are just giving Brad free pointsÖ

Final Thoughts: Just looking down at the stat sheet, and Captain Ken was held scoreless?! Holy Cow, that doesn't happen on his B1 West team and he has to fight for shots with lots of greedy ballhogs in that league.  That should never happen on Cleary Club. They need to find a way to snap this 3 game losing streak. No matter what happens in the N.W.O. game, Genzyme will be in first place and all they have to do is win out to secure it.  Their destiny is in their own hands.

Intro: I really like the Mullets chances in this one. Looking down thereís no Jamil and Kevin has been MIA for a few weeks for the Moorriors.  A big night from JaySar should get this done!

Game ReCap: Noah, trust me when I say this, I've done the all white shoe thing, and for guys as pasty as us, just don't do it. Give it up right this instant, I command you.

Bolger comes out and knocks down a couple Js. I said it last week, and I'll say it again this week, as good as Sar is, they need other guys to step up and score.

Gerrity is on the balcony, cheering for the Mullets, obnoxiously I'll admit, but I wouldn't have it any other way.  Moorriors are disoriented, only Joff's 3 has prevented a double digit lead so far.  And that took 2 seconds for them to wake up. Dre slices to the hole, Noah with the turnaround, then the two of them trade 3s!! Back down to a one point game.

WHEW! Caitlin gets home early from work, sets the DVR for the Cs.  God sheís awesome, and a much better basketball player than I am. What, you donít know what Iím talking about?! Donít you read the write-ups in order yet??

Mullets lead by four at the break, but the biggest story in this one is that Noah has already picked up his allotted 5 fouls. Without any subs, he's allowed to stay in the game, but every one that he picks up will be extremely costly. For those that don't read the rules page, it's a 2 shot technical, as well as the ball, as well as whatever the call was. So 4 shots AND the ball on a shooting foul. He's going to have to be really, really careful.

Anyone want to hit a 3 in this one?! Zack and Sar are trading misses, and USok isn't shooting nearly enough! I can't fathom how  I can't fathom how the Mullets haven't even looked to take the ball at Noah this half.  Be aggressive! B-E Agressive!

The Eraser is dominating the boards in this one.  Usually that leads to Dre flying down the floor for easy transition points, but not tonight, the Mullets are back on D.

Iíve said it before, and Iím going to say it again, USOK, shoot more 3s!!!

So Zack waits until after he gets T-ed up to hit a couple 3s. Makes perfect sense really. Moorriors take their first lead 50-49 with 4 left. Thereís ANOTHER 3 from Zack, thanks for waking up man!  Gah, lack of execution by the Mullets down the stretch. Another winnable game slips from their fingers.   I know they're 1-7 now, but don't sleep on them, they've let a couple winnable games slip away. They'll be battle tested for the playoffs.

Final Thoughts: So close, and yet so far away for the Mullets.  Just, well, frustrating to watch!  If I were them, Iíd blame Sar. I mean 16 points?!?! What is this, amateur hour???

Intro: No Acosta, No Drama, does Alnylium have a shot in this one?!

Game ReCap: Dubois starts off with a couple 3s looking to erase last week's

Sparkles to the rescue though, he's going to need to be really productive to make me not mention those guys that are missing every couple lines.

Spann is doing his best Admiral impression, banking in turnarounds, crashing the O glass like a monster, and  swatting shots. He's single handedly keeping the Joes in it.  Dude's got 12 points already, step yo game up Nugent!!

Are those Business socks Dan?! That must mean it's Business Time !

CD just bombing away, fellas, play a little D!! Good call switching Mike onto Spann for a while, dude was killing it, but Mike gets a few blocks on him and feeds CD on the break.

Just when it looked like Spaeth was going to snipe the Joes back into the game, Rob steps up in a big way for Alnylium, scoring 7 points.  He's helped his squad maintain their double digit lead, let's see if they can hang onÖ

Final Thoughts: Despite a MONSTER game from the newly promoted Admiral, the Average Joes fall victim to a very motivated Alnylium team. Whatís going on in the East this season? Itís like anyone can beat anyone else at any time. Donít fall asleep at the wheel!!

CPP Down too big too Early against N.W.O.

News: Brought to you by Tommy Doyles ($12 Pitchers & 2 For 1 Burgers)

I tried, I really did. I got through nearly 5 whole games with the live blog theme tonight, but I was just spent.  It was alright though, because this was a rough game to take in.  N.W.O. jumped out to a 36-15 lead at the half thanks to Phi Slamma Jamma and Q dropping in 8 points each.  CPP just couldn't get the offense kick started. Like I said in the preview (seriously people, sign up for the message boards: http://www.crfcbasketball.com/phpBB2/index.php ) CPP would need Charm in this one to try to keep the NWO bigs in check. Without him, it was up to JOP, Brett and Pipes to battle them all night, and that didn't go well for the first 20 minutes.

But something clicked in the second frame.  Maybe it was because Mike D started firing up 3s, but the defense just came togetehr for CPP.  And of course, it helps to score points.  Chopko and JOp just said F it and started bombing away.  Sometimes that's the kind of attitude you have to possess.  You can't score if you don't shoot the ball.  When Shyam and Pipes each chipped in a 3, the hole was suddenly in single digits.  N.W.O. had no idea what the hell had happened.

But up stepped Rob and Chris O to take control of the game. With the ball in their hands the team started taking better shots and re-exherted control over thegame.

So sure, NWO stays in a virtual tie for first (Genzyme has the tiebreaker) but it wasn't pretty. CPP, despite outscoring NWO 33-21 in the second frame, face a hole that had been to big to climb out of completely.  I like that they didn't give in and just fold, this team has plenty of fight left in it, if only they had a little more size!
