Winter 2011: B2 League Champs: Wheels of Steel

    Wheels Survives and Advances
Wheels of Steel 62 The Bomb Squad 59

Yes, I know, if O\'cal had covered these games the write-ups would have been up by midnight.  But do I look like I have a uni-brow? I tried to get him to cover these, believe me.

But then I would have missed out on a pretty excited pair of games.  In the opener of the B2 South semi-finals, the top seeded Wheels of Steel faced a tough test against the Bomb Squad.  I was told thatI shouldn\'t judge Bomb Squad by their record, they play incredibly well when they have a full squad.

Well everyone struggled in the opening minutes getting used to playing at Wall Ball Arena.  It\'s a different beast, the walls are really, really close.  For the Squad, Sam had no trouble adapting off the bat. He took the ball to the hole, took the wall slam in stride and jogged back on D ready to get a steal and do it again.  He paced the offense with 9 first half points.  Zouk was all over the place, sprinting for boards, getting putbacks, but foul trouble limited his minutes late in the first half and to start the second.  No biggie, Qym and Raf stepped their games up and produced to keep Bomb Squad upset-minded.

The Squad let by 7 at the break and it looked like we had yet another upset in the making.  The South had THREE in the first round last week.  The rest of the B2 leagues combined only had TWO combined! And they say parity is dead.

Anyway, this Wheels of Steel teams reminds me of the Scalopini team that came out of the B2 South in the Spring 2010 season. Bunch of guys that don\'t wow you individually, but play well together and have a jumpshooting point guard to pace the offense. They came out of the South and shocked the East before winning the Uni game and I could see the same thing happening this season.

Roberts and Monroe can control the boards, Jamie and Nick chip in a ton of hustle, and no one is really sure what Rory does, but he\'s there, cracking jokes about the Breakfast Club and his Co-Ed team, at least he brings something to the table.  Everyone does something well and that\'s the sign of a good championship squad!

Down 7 with 7 to go, that jumpshooting pg, Tristan, hit back to back 3s to make this thing a gamel  It was the start of a 13-2 run that gave Wheels control of the game.  Rory hit 3 of 4 from the stripe down the stretch, but Bomb Squad still got the ball back with a chance to tie.  Thankfully for all involved (ok just me) we avoided another OT game (for now).

Wheels will play at 7:20 next week against the Big Dilemma for the right to play in the B2 Unification Final Four!

The Bomb Keeps Ticking But Will It Implode?

What a way to start off the Dirty Dirty Playoff action as the MVP was battling the DPoY.

The MVP did all he could, dropping a game high 29, but in the end, the Squad came away with the Big W to advance to the 2nd round, which may be played at CAC in Cambridge so please stay tuned to your emails for next week's schedule.  Big Z was an animal tonight, matching the MVP and Scott bucket for bucket down the stretch.

The key question is can the Bomb Squad keep it together long enough to stop snappin at one another to make it to the championship.  They got the tools, but it was like listening to an episode of the View with all the chirping back and forth.  Keep it together fellas and bring home the Chip!

    F/ 2OT Nasty Falls

The game of the year goes to the knuckleheads from Nasty and IHML.  Wow, fellas, wow.  This was a game of many heros, many villians, and many many woos and uhhhhhhhs from Trup and the crowd.

The Haas Saas and Trup did what they needed to do.  Glenn, fresh off his Tiger Blood Transfusion did what he needed to do for his crew on the defensive end, while Agent 000 made his return in the paint with a 15 point night.

In the end, Rugga, WHO hasnt sniffed a basketball in over a month was the MAN in OT.  Never leave us again.  Despite Bobby's Ballsy 3 to send the game into a 2nd OT, (yes, they parked the dump truck out back for his sack), IHML brought it, and will have to bring it again next week.

Bien muchachos.  That means Good Muchachos.  Stay tuned to the website and emails to know WHERE and When your game is next week.

    Big D One Step Closer

As predicted by yours truly, the Big D is one win away from a finals show down.  Of course it helps that Frut and Ross were no shows, but regardless, I was right.

The Big D was led by a Pete Ya Boy Song trip dub that almost didnt happen because of a late missed lay up, but the ensuing 3 ensured Ya Boy's place in CAC Playoff history.

Despite 13 3's from the News Team (5 from Hammer), the Big D blew the News Team out of the water and will be taking on IHML next week.

Stay tuned to the website and your emails to know WHERE and when you are playing.

Playoff Forfeit, but that's what Im Talkin Bout Tristian

So the Cross didnt field a squad tonight, so we had 45 minutes to kill, staring at one another, but then IT happened.

Yes, that's right, Tristan, the league Bridesmaid (see Awards) hooked it up with some frosty brews.  Now this is what Im talking about.  This is old school CAC to me, hooking the scorekeeper up with some booze.  If Tristan had hooked me up with 2 hookers with adams' apples, this would have been the League Night Out from the Fall of 2004.  Thanks Man!

Fear the Beard...the Beard does not like forfeits!
