Spring 2010: C League Champs: Steamboats Too

GNats Bing Google In The Upset
    Grand Nationals 49 Google 40

Google came in with only a few losses and two - no less - by forfeit.  Despite rules in place to avoid two forfeits in a row AND multiple players showing up without four games played (thanks Serge) - the GNats just wanted to play ball.

So win or lose - the GNATS declared Bing is Better and waxed the former Co-Ed League champs from the playoffs in fine fashion leading most of the way to their nine-point victory.

If I was on the Google side - once I saw the second half of the Hartjes Foundation dust off the leg braces and snap a three in the opening minutes - I would have packed the packs cause the game was essentially over if Double Down Dave was jacking successful three-bees.

But it was more defensively from the Grand Nationals that bothered the Google upstarts.  Destalder was fantastic with 26 points on 4-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc but even he was getting dizzy from the heat and this kat can run, run, and then some.

27-18 at the half - 18 points at the half has to be a low for the Googles and Destadler is sitting for the opening of the second?  Weird.  Finally checks in six minutes later - but the G-Nats are holding onto the eight-point lead.

Wait one second?  It took all this time for a Broadway Joe Andrade mention??  WHAT A PICK UP for the GNats?!  Too bad Pepe Pierre LaCroix is not here as his dynamic duo partner in the backcourt.  That would have won a few C League 4v4 championships back in the day.  Andrade comes alive with all nine of his points in the second frame and a Pearson circus act in the paint all but seals the deal in the waning moments.

Google surely should know - as former champs - the art of time-clock management.  Not in this one.  The allowed Andrade to dribble around to his hearts content and then vets like Breton, Hartjes, and Beintum knew how to play the four corners in the final ticks of the time.

Skillet Skaletsky drained both his freebies in the end to complete the upset.  Even though I already know the outcome - good luck to the G-Nats.  Easily one of my favs from back in the day covering the scoreboard...
