Winter 2009: C League Champs: XJV

XJV Caps Undefeated Season With Another Impressive Win
    XJV 70 A2Z Specialtists 48

In a coronation that crowned an absolutely impressive stretch that carried over from the very beginning, XJV pounced on A2Z Specialists for a 70-48 victory to finish with a 13-0 record and the right to be called C League Champions for the 2009 Winter Session. XJV had to fight off memories of losing in the last two title games, but their focus was showcased on their performance as they led for almost of the entire game as they won going away. A2Z definitely appeared to be game at the get-go as we had a 2-2 tie 4 minutes into the match as both teams felt each other. However, the key moments of the game were captured at this juncture as Matt Ruxton managed a 6/6 in the first 6:00 of the game. Yes, six points and six rebounds in six minutes. Ruxton was an animal on the glass as he made some huge putbacks for his team to provide a small cushion. Then, Steve Barbuto followed up that effort with 2 huge 3-pointers as XJV had a 14-6 lead with 13:00 to go. Ruxton kept up his persistence as he ended up with 10 points and 10 rebounds at the half, Barbuto had 9 at the break, and Rich Sando also hit a huge jumper and suddenly 8 became 10 and 10 became 14. XJV led 30-12 at the half. Between Ruxton owning the glass and Noah Shibley's fantastic defense on A2Z's main weapon, Ryan Ouellette (only 3 points in the first half), one can see why XJV dominated in the first half of this game. Not to mention, they overcame Tom Layman's ankle injury as their rotation went down to six for the twenty-eight minutes of the game. Still, all XJV in the first half. Could A2Z make it a game and somehow pull off a comeback?

For a fleeting while, it looked like A2Z was going to make a big run. In fact, they outscored XJV 36-30 in the second half as Ouellette got going right after the break with the midrange game. A2Z trailed 34-18 with about 18:00 to go and then "The Wall" became unstoppable again as Ruxton hit some huge layups and one incredibly sweet fadeway jumper to make a 40-18 game. Ruxton and Barbuto kept the heat on and then Noah Shibley took over the scoring duties for XJV. A2Z kept battling as Leo Rosales hit for 10 of his 13 in the second half. Ouellette was an absolute scoring machine, garnering 17 of his 20 in the second half. Still, it was just too little and too late with the big deficit. XJV had put enough in the bank in the first half and they cashed in all second half. Ottery made a big shot near the end and Bugbee made some key rebounds as XJV coasted to victory. Steve Barbuto led his team with 26 points, which included a 5-7 performance from three-point land. Noah Shibley had 15 points, 11 of which came in the second half. However, the unquestionable Finals MVP is Matt Ruxton. Matt threw up a dominant line of 20 points and 18 rebounds, but his impact on the game was immeasurable. With his consistent scoring and incredible defense, his team was able to get out on the right foot as XJV never looked back. The timely hoops couldn't be overlooked, even with Barbuto's impressive outside display. Still, this was a complete XJV victory as Brendan Thomas (thanks for showing up early!) and Tom Layman were both used sparingly due to injuries and outside commitments. And no one will say "Patriots"...that has to feel good. It's really tough to run the table, but XJV plays well together and they remain composed at all times. With that, what a way to end the C-League this year at CAC!

Congratulations to A2Z on a great season, a very worthy finalist, and congrats to the champs, XJV, on a perfect season! We hope to see all of you guys back on the court real soon!
