Spring 2013: Co-Ed 5v5 League Champs: SHOTS

    SHOTS Complete Perfect Regular Season
    River Hobos 54 SHOTS 89

SHOTS wrapped up their perfect regular season with a 89-54 romping of the River Hobos.

Despite playing the first five minutes with four players, SHOTs took a 44-25 lead into the half and coasted from there. Mo Collins stuffed the stat sheet with 26 points, 9 boards, 16 assists, and 7 steals. His partner in crime John Burns scored 24 points, including a thunderous one-handed dunk in transition, and 16 rebounds. Melis Dural made it to the gym late but connected on five triples. Depending on tomorrow’s results, SHOTs will grab either the first or second overall seed heading into the playoffs.

The River Hobos just didn’t have the firepower to stick with the talented SHOTS. Gaberiele Michetti paced his squad with 24 points and 12 boards while Tracie Henson added 8 points of her own. The River Hobos will find themselves seeded anywhere from 11th to 14th in the playoffs.

Band of Misfits 52  Thunder Buddies 4 Life 51

Misfits End Regular Season In Style

The regular season is officially in the books. Game one of the night featured a nail biter between the Band of Misfits and the Thunder Buddies with the Misfits edging out a narrow 52-51 victory.

The game was an ugly one as both teams managed a combined 33 points (17-17 Misfits) at the half. But in the final few minutes, both squads exchanged barrages of three pointers. Chris Burke and Caitlin Tibbets traded big triples in the closing minutes as the teams traded leads. Ultimately, with 8 seconds left, Laura Jasinski drilled a three pointer to cut the TBs deficit to one point. The ensuing Misfits inbounds pass sailed into the rafters and the TBs were given a chance to win it on a buzzer beater. However, Terry Henderson’s shot bounced off the rim as the horn sounded.

To nobody’s surprise, Gael Frouin stuffed the stat sheet with 7 points 16 boards and 5 helpers while Jesse Cox poured in 17 points. But it was the Commissioner himself who had the performance of the night, nabbing 13 rebounds, swatting away 7 shots, and coming away with 4 steals. With the win, the Misfits will likely sit somewhere between a three and five seed when the bracket is unveiled next week. On the losing end, the loss didn’t affect the TBs position within their own division. They will likely end up as the 9th or 10th overall seed.

Just Look At It 65  Sun Dance 78

    SD Remains Hot

Sun Dance overcame a six-point halftime deficit to collect a 78-65 win. The team used a tenacious full-court press and scorching outside shooting to roll in the second stanza.

Once again it was the one-two punch of Jamal Jefferson and Mike Kearney that blazed the way for SD. The two combined for 45 points, 21 boards, and 17 assists. Dance has won three straight and is without question one of the hottest team in the co-ed league regardless of the division. Looking into next week, SD finds themselves in a clump within the standings and could be seeded anywhere from fourth to seventh.

Despite Just Look At It’s fifth consecutive loss, I still maintain that this team is far better than their 2-7 record reflects. Paul Nimblett is rounding into form, as he demonstrated last night with a 26 point performance. With Nimblett firing on all cylinders and strong shooting performances by Matt Forlizzi, Dustin Williams, and Steph Baran, this squad could make some noise in the playoffs, particularly in the opening round. Look for JLAI to be seeded tenth or eleventh heading into the playoffs.

    BOOM Rounds Out Regular Season

Game three was the ugliest of the night as BOOM rolled to a 60-26 victory over the Rim Jobs.

With 13:00 remaining in the first half, BOOM held a 4-3 lead. Neither team had found a rhythm and shots rimmed out from all over the floor. Eventually, BOOM’s talent broke through and they took a 32-10 lead into the half. Peter Uzoma dominated the much small team physically, recording 13 points and 15 boards. Tristan Mouligne added 18 while Sweck contributed 9 points, 9 boards and 4 helpers. Like Sun Dance, BOOM also finds itself in a clump within the standings and could be seeded anywhere from fourth to seventh.

For the Rim Jobs, the loss marks their eight straight. Boozer led the squad in scoring with 7 points while Chris Boll added four points and 10 boards. The Rim Jobs will be seeded anywhere between eleventh and fourteenth.
