Winter 2018: Franchise B Draft Champs: Scumbag Sang

Sang rides Shy and Arthur to title
Mean Machine 53 Scumbag Sang 70

Championship game! Let's get right to it - we had almost-full attendance between both teams in this one, with the notable exception of Mr. Tom Coburn. For the second year in a row, Coburn missed a key playoff game due to a "business trip", aka running his own company or some nonsense like that. Idk, I guess it's legit. Everyone else was there though, and ready to roll!

Mr. Robert Haas was certainly ready to go, having made it clear before the game on Twitter, and then backing it up as soon as the game began. I think it was Arthur on Haas, and maybe the scouting report was lacking, because he let Haas get a little too much space early on. Mostly off 3's and long 2's, he scored a quick 10 points in only 4 minutes to kick off the game, giving Mean Machine the early lead, and forcing Sang to call a timeout and gather the troops. They recovered though, and we had a long stretch of close play through the middle of the first half.

Guys on both ends exhibited some nice passing - for Sang's squad, Arthur found Shy and others for some buckets early on with some good looks (and also got a few buckets of his own). On the other end, MacDonald was a little more restrained than usual with his scoring efforts, but had a few good assists. As we got closer to halftime, Sang went on a little run to gain some separation, buoyed mainly by Shy. He got a steal and fast break bucket, and then converted some looks around the hoop. After being close for pretty much the whole first half, the Sang run in the last few minutes before halftime broke it open a bit, and they rolled into the break with a 40-31 lead. Shy and Arthur led the way, with Shy putting up 22 and Athur logging 11, accounting for 33 of the team's 40 between the duo.

Even though it was those two doing the vast majority of the scoring, Sang’s offense looked a little better than I’d seen in previous games where they’d stalled a bit. They were moving the ball reasonably well, and many Shy and Arthur’s buckets came off solid team play, not just simple 1-on-1 takes. For Mean Mchine, Haas had 12 points and 7 boars at the break, while MacDonald was almost halfway to a low-scoring triple-double, with 5 points, 4 boards, and 4 assists.

The beginning of the second half came with renewed aggression from Mean Machine, as they tried to close the 9 point gap to something more manageable. MacDonald in particular was more aggressive, deciding that he needed to look to score more if they were gonna have success. The effort was there for Mean Machine, but unfortunately the results were not. Sang’s squad kept their heads in the game and kept up with some steady play to not let Mean Machine get any closer. Far from tightening up, Shy in particular seemed to be playing loose and easy. From the other end of the court, he found Sheffield streaking up the sideline and hit him with a long football pass, which Sheffield took to the house for the layup. Not long after, Sheffield returned the favor, grabbing a loose ball and lobbing ahead to Shy, who had leaked out ahead of the pack. Shy took it in and threw down a casual one-hand dunk, which is definitely a normal occurrence in Franchise B, and something I could totally do if I wanted to. Shy told his teammates to look at their lead and loosen up a bit: “Come on guys, have some fun with it!”

Mean Machine kept pressing, but it just wasn’t going their way. MacDonald continued with the high effort play, racking up several steals and taking the ball aggressively to the hoop. He got a few buckets, and drew a number of fouls too, but his 9 second-half points weren’t enough to spark a comeback. Haas had gone cold from outside with his jump shot, and neither Chad, Doyle, or Marcus were able to fill the gap. The virtual nail in the coffin came when Sanginario hit two 3’s in relatively quick succession, pushing the lead to over 15. Not long after that, we were officially done, with the final score of 70-53.

    Player Grades

    Sandbaginario

Shy: (A-) - Wasn’t totally dominant/overwhelming, but was unsurprisingly the best player on the floor.

Arthur: (A-) - Key game from Arthur, stepping up on both ends to help take some of the pressure off Shy.

Jet: (B) - Didn’t score a lot, but also didn’t take all that many shots. Strong defense, and good hustle plays as usual.

Sheffield: (B+) - Pretty good game for Gordon, hitting a couple 3’s, rebounding well, and logging some nice assists.

Marks: (B) - Did his usual strong work in the middle of the paint, rebounding and defending well, and converting a couple opportunities for buckets that came his way.

Sanginario: (B) - Hit a couple 3’s, dished out a couple assists, and made fine captaining decisions.

    Mean Machine:

Haas: (B) - High effort game from Bobby and he did a lot of good stuff, just went a bit cold with his jump shot in the second half.

MacDonald: (B) - A for effort, and did plenty of non-scoring things well, but his team needed more than 14 points from him.

Chad: (B) - After a very good first half with 11 points, couldn’t keep it up in the second, putting up just two. 4 offensive rebounds is impressive though.

Doyle: (C+) - A+ teammate grade for apparently delaying his flight to be able to play in this game, but unfortunately had a bit of a tough shooting performance from 3 and the foul line.

Marcus: (C+) - Guarded Shy a lot, and did as decent a job as one could expect. Tough shooting game.
