Winter 2017: Franchise A Draft League Champs: Flint Tropics

Mazz Returns Proceeds to Miss Every Single Three He Attempts
The Corporation 60 Flint Tropics 74

    PREGAME

Flint Tropics won game 1 handily behind the excellent play of their fearless leader, Billy Jackson. Mazz was not in attendance for The Corporation, however so FT was expected to roll. They did. Mazz was back tonight for game 2 and I figured this would be a much closer game and I even gave The Corp a small chance of winning. Very small.

I am also sad to report I was about 5 minutes late to this game. I intended to show up a bit early to get some sound bites from the players, but apparently a little rain makes everyone drive like a bunch of bitches. Oh well.

No usual suspects in the WAG department for this one. No Katy, no Holly, no Kate Beckinsale (mine). However we did have Ryan’s shooting coach and his wife and/or sister. I am not 100% sure who these ladies were so maybe he can clear that up for us.

    GRADES

    Flint Tropics

Khaled (B): Solid game for K but he didn’t light the world on fire. It took him a while to convert his first field goal, but he made a living at the free throw line (8/10). K was excellent on the glass too, snagging a number of tough rebounds in traffic.

Sovis (B): Fine game for Sovis, who didn’t force the issue and did a nice of job of taking what the defense gave him. His scoring output was relatively low, but Sovis did exactly what his team needed in order to get the W.

Ryan (C+): Ryan knocked down a meaningless DEEP 3 as time expired (after this 3 someone from the crowd yelled “FINALLY!”...I chuckled) to make his stat line look a little better but overall it wasn’t a great game for Ryan. He ended up going 2/8 from deep which was really 1/7. The guy still gets a ring though!

Billy (A) FINALS MVP: Billy Jackson folks. Your finals MVP, Yup, I said it and it really was an easy choice. Billy dropped 22 in this game (a game high) and was extremely efficient shooting the rock. I think the highlight of this game for Billy though was when he got a tech! Never seen that before. Awesome moment. Anyways, Billy was on fire in this game and Mazz was completely befuddled on how this guy can be torching them so badly. Well, Mazz, it’s because you are FOOD! Action Jackson = FINALS MVP!

Koller (A-): Koller had a really nice game on a night where the rest of the FT bigs were a bit off. Koller was active on the glass and solid at the free throw line. Zero turnovers too!

    The Corporation

Ryo (D): For anyone else, 17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 dimes is a pretty good stat line, but for the MVP of the league that is downright bad. Ryo did not have a good game. He struggled to hit shots and his assist total might have been a season low (I don’t care to check that). I can’t rag on the guy too much though since he basically needed to carry this team in order for them to win and he gave it his all in this series.

Mazz (D): If not for a little flurry of buckets to open the second half Mazz could be looking at an F here. After a lot of talk about him being the saving grace for his team AND making it a point to broadcast my 0/11 showing in the semis, Mazz came out and laid an all-time egg. Mazz went 0/8 from deep, and missed a bunch of other 2 point shots. The Corp really needed his offense and Mazz just didn’t show up. Trash!

Ray (A): Ray ended his season on a high note as he was the best player on the floor for the Corp in this one. Ray put up a 17 point 11 rebound double double and he was much better on defense compared to game 1. Ray showed me a lot this season and in this game. When he can keep his emotions in check he is a legitimate asset on any team.

Eric (C): Bonvie didn’t do much in this game but he didn’t really hurt his team either. He was 0/3 from deep as FT made it a point to blanket him on the three point line.

Buckley (C+): Buck once again struggled with Khaled’s defense but he did manage to snag 6 offensive rebounds. I would have loved to see him turn those OREBs into points though. Buck would end up with 8 points and 9 rebounds in this game but I would say it was an average Buckley game overall.

Tyler (C): If you don’t do much in the game but don’t hurt the team you get a C. Not much to say here. Tyler played his role and made sure not to fuck up. It wasn’t his fault the Corp lost.

    The Ref

Marlon (A+): Marlon was absolutely terrific in this game. He was consistent and made the right call most of the time. The best part was that he wasn’t taking any shit. The refs in this league have been gunshy about handing out techs. Not Marlon. He gave 2 in this game to Ryo and Billy! Nice work by Marlon tonight.

    GAMES NOTES

    - MVP: Billy - Yup. Billy was MVP of both games, making him the consensus finals MVP. Incredible two games for Billy especially when you consider the perception of the people that he is FOOD.

    - LVP: Mazz - Easy choice. 0/8 from deep. Finals choke artist. Not clutch. TRAAAASSSHHH!!!

    - This game was much better than game 1 but one Flit Tropics run at the end of the first half spelled doom for the Corp. FT controlled the action for the second half and even though a couple of times the Corp made things interesting they couldn’t hit that one key shot (cough, Mazz, cough) to get them back in the game.

    - Let’s talk more about Billy. Why not right? When a scrub plays over his head he deserves to be talked up. End of the first half Billy gets the ball with 2 seconds left. He takes one dribble and launches a half court bomb. Let me tell you this thing was ugly. It looked short, it had no rotation and I thought no fucking chance this goes in. SWISH! My god it was a thing of beauty. I don’t even think it hit the net. This really took the wind of out of the Corp’s sail and you could see it in their body language. What a shot!

    - Shout out to Ryan for playing really well in the playoffs. Unsung hero in my opinion. I don’t know his numbers, but overall in the 3 playoff games he was excellent. After what was a very average regular season, Ryan stepped up when the bright lights were on. I figured he would as I noted many times in my write ups throughout the season.

    - Mazz posted a Facebook picture of my 0/11 showing so I really need to let him hear it for putting up an 0fer as well. Nick Mazzeo. Finals Game 2. 0/8 from deep.

    - Flint Tropics was the better team without question in this series. Khaled and Sovis were an absolute handful and FT had a great supporting card. Let’s also mention their 6th guy, Will Charnley, who stopping showing to games after like 5 weeks. That’ll help! FT was deep, balanced and they played great together.

    - Credit to the Corp for a strong season as well. Mazz has never made the finals as a captain so he made positive strides this season. Will they make the next step this season? Nah, probably not.
